For -- drum roll please -- "insulting Islam." See here for more on "insulting Islam" and the dire consequences involved. "Morocco bans French magazine L'Express International for 'insulting' Islam," from the Canadian Press, November 2:
RABAT, Morocco — Morocco has banned the most recent issue of the French magazine L'Express International for insulting Islam.Information Minister Khalid Naciri says he had no choice because Article 29 of the Moroccan Press Code forbids publications damaging to Islam or the monarchy.
The cover story of this week's L'Express is titled "The Jesus-Muhammad Shock" and discusses the relationship between Christianity and Islam.
The magazine's Internet site says it doesn't understand Morocco's reaction.
Morocco didn't specify what the insult was.

The gall of those Gauls. You would think at this stage of the game the French would understand enough, not to step out of line, and be good
dhimmis. That, is the insult.

It's obvious...They put Jesus name first...behind Mohammad...no self respecting Mohammadan is going to go for that...

They probably called Jesus 'Jesus' instead of 'Esau' like good dhimmis.

For those who can read French, the article that occasioned such offence is online at: http://www.lexpress.fr/actualite/societe/religion/le-choc-jesus-mahomet_656036.html
It was published to lead up to the inter-faith meeting due to start in Rome on 4th November, and is the work of authors Jacques Duquesne, Salim Bachi, Claire Chartier, and Christian Makarian. It has headings such as "Jesus and Mohammed: what separates them" and "The Bible is quite different from the Koran." The section on what separates Jesus from Mohammed has a paragraph on Violence: "Jesus - He rejects it ... Mohammed - The Koran, on which the Prophet fixes his conduct, justifies violence towards those who refuse to obey the Muslim law ..."

In these articles there is nothing more than a very moderated truth about Islam ...
It is probably to much for several Muslims.

The French truly opened up a pandoras box by invading Algeria. Now they are dealing with the aftermath of colonialism.

It would be ironic if the French could ban a Moroccan magazine in return. However, I doubt that the ability to publish a magazine like L'Express International exists in Morocco.

So... Islam is so fragile that words alone can damage it?
What a weak, shaky little "religion"!

Re the French text, I can assist but today is not a good day...maybe later this week (or month). There's over 30 pages of text in these 5 great articles and over 150 comments from their readers.
The 5 articles are:
1) Jesus and Mohammad, the clash
2) Jesus, the rebel messenger
3) Mohammad, prophet and warrior
4) Jesus and Mohammad, what separates them?
5) The Bible is far from the Qur'an

Just when I thought Morocco was joining the 21st century. This sent them back 25 years.

you are not the only one .Morocco is supposed to be a moderate Islamic country ...It is like everything else in the Islamic world You don't get what you see , they all have a secret side that will be exposed one day or the other.
Now, reading the article .
1) the meeting between the Church and the Imams is the great idea of Rome.
2)it sounds like the Pope don't get it. Talking with those people is a waste of time. Not only they will argue like there is no to morrow but if by miracle they agree on something , they will change their mind as soon as they go back home.
3)In order to accelerate the process, Rome should have read all the books written by Robert Spencer especially "Blogging the Koran"
4)I don't thing that L'express is hurt by the Moroccan decision. They don't really care and you have to congratulate them just for the fact that they are trying to write about the subject
5)I would like to know who is paying all thoses expenses for this summit. The Catholic church....?Saudi Arabia? If the Catholic church is paying for this , it is a waste of money and it really should be used to help the Christians persecuted by Islam .

Spanaker - since most Islamic Republics are stuck in day of Mohammed, I guess Morocco would only be 14 hundred and 25 years behind the times.

Here is a quick update...
Due to an overwhelming number of comments (well over 500), L'Express magazine has closed the comment blog.
Many of the comments I read last night have been removed. I guess they went too close to the quick.
This issue is not over. This weekly will have to continue the debate in future issues (it's good for their business, too).
In case your town has an international magazine store, this L'Express is worth $5 just for the pictures of Mohammad (showing his face) on the flying horse, Mohammad talking to a group of Christians and a Christian monk talking to Mohammad as a child. Supposedly, this monk discerned that Mohammad would be a future prophet.

I remember a Pat Oliphant cartoon from the 1980s, when Americans for some reason were boycotting touring France. The caption read:
"The French, no longer having any Americans to insult, have turned, instead, to insulting each other."
And that was before the age of the burning Peugeots.

Jewel Atkins, do you think the French bashing crap you have posted is relevant? Please guys, give us French people a break!

It sounds as though the people at 'L'Express' who put this article together, *and published it! complete with illustrations!* ought to qualify for a nomination for 'Anti-Dhimmi International Award 2008 (Media Division)'.
DhimmiNot - good point - those jihadwatchers who have access to suitable stores should surely consider buying the magazine.
To non-French jihadwatchers: if you have a high-school child studying French, a copy of the original French edition containing the article, could be donated to the 'advanced French resource section' of your child's school library (along with Caroline Fourest's 'Frere Tariq', and Peroncel Hugoz' ''Le Radeau de Mahomet', and a copy - to be found on this site, by judicious googling - of Robert Redeker's splendid little 'Le Figaro' article on Islam, and...well, you get the idea: texts that provide good examples of modern French writing while also educating in other areas entirely).
