New Muslim channel aims to provide non-Muslims with a "better understanding" of Islam

When will we get Christian, Jewish, Hindu, and Buddhist stations dedicated to offering the world a "better understanding" of their principles -- you know, to clear the air? Oh, never mind: those religions are not perpetually misunderstood.

"New Muslim TV channel to be launched in SA," by Suthentira Govender for the Times, November 15:

An international Islamic-focused satellite TV channel that aims to give non-Muslims a better understanding of the faith will be launched in South Africa early next year.

The UK-based Islam Channel, which beams to European, Middle Eastern and north African countries, will be broadcast locally on DStv from February.

With its headquarters in central London, Islam Channel provides alternative news, current affairs and entertainment programming from an Islamic perspective.

Broadcast in English, it first took to the air in 2004. It [will?] be available on a basic bouquet in South Africa.

CEO Mohamed Ali said the channel acted as an “interface between Muslims and non-Muslims”.

“We decided to come to South Africa because there is a Muslim community here and we are an English-speaking channel that targets English-speaking nations,” said Ali.

“We are happy that we reach a wide audience. We have plenty of non-Muslims who watch our channel for the entertainment.

Ali said the channel was family-oriented with a “no harm, no offence“ policy.

Through its annual Global Peace and Unity event in the UK, it tries to stimulate debate and create awareness among different cultures about Islam.

Ali has also been trying to tackle Islamaphobia through the channel’s programming.

“There is a perception in the minds of non-Muslims about the status of women in Islam. We have quite a few programmes run by women, targeting women.”

Well, there it is then: "programmes run by women." That should put an end to all that "Islamophobic" nonsense about women's status in Islam.

Personally, I wouldn't watch this program if it was the only one on television.

Then there is the problem of people like me who knew nothing about Islam but when I started reading their literature, I was smart enough to see the lies. I recall on history book where everything the Muslims did was good and everything the Christians did was bad. I thought, "These folks must really think I'm stupid."

As a devote Christian, the more I learned about Islam, the more I have come to see it as a toxic religion. I also believe that the Imams and Mullahs are so venomous about keeping Christian missionaries out of their countries because Christianity is a more coherent and beautiful religion.

Let them have their Muslim channel. Most people will see the lies. It is sort of like if the Communists in the 1960's had a Communist channel. Most people would actually find their serious programming laughable. I think the Muslim channel will be amusing, except for the confused people who will decide to join that sorry religion called Islam then want to go out and be "peaceful" by abusing their neighbours.

Islamic channel to educate the non Muslims. Another way to lie about the lack of peace and sanity in Islamic countries and another avenue to mouth off against all other religions and cultures as being the oppressors and evil that is destroying Islam and slaughtering Mohammedans. Islam is crap.

Look at who they emulate a criminal called Mohammad. In other religions you do not have criminals. Jesus..nope, Buddha...nope, Krishna... nope, Guru Nanak... nope, in Judaism... nope, none. So what is it that people are missing that they need a channel to educate non Muslims.

"A toxic religion." Just so. And now, a television station is dedicated to presenting the poison as a delicious fruit.

Call it, "Taquiyya TV."

Once you join, we kill you if you try to leave our 'religion'.

Lovely bunch, eh?

Zombie TV.

Will anything get lost in the transfer of the material to English? Will it be in context?

Islam TV is only one of three English-speaking dawa television channels seen throughout the Middle East. There is also the "Huda" channel where Western converts to Islam as well as westernized Muslim shaykhs give lectures and lead discussions on Islam, and "Peace TV" out of Bombay where Dr. Zakir Naik and others give lectures. Fortunately Life TV "Al Hayat" with Zakariya Boutros and his courageous band of Infidels is on the same satellite link and has millions of viewers throughout the area. That channel, however, is only in Arabic. WHY CAN'T SOMEONE START AN ENGLISH-SPEAKING TV CHANNEL that asks the same questions about Islam that Al Hayat does in Arabic? It could be dynamite. There are a dozen or more Western "church" channels beaming sermons by Western preachers into the Middle East, but I think an English version of Al Hayat would be much more effective.

They said it; the show "targets" non-Muslims. Nicely put - a well-chosen word.
They will probably get an award from some multicultural body. As happened here; a woman went aroung proselytising Islam, mainly to captive audiences such as schoolchildren, and won first much acclaim and then an award and then a good salary. Can you imagine if I went around the schools and asked if I could teach the kids a little about the Bible?

"We have quite a few programmes run by women, targeting women."

These females mystify me, unless I visualize a bucket of crabs -- where the one who almost gets out gets dragged down again by the mob at the bottom of the bucket.

Slavery is freedom. Here's your headgear, make sure not to speak too loudly, and take your beatings for Allah.

Well, considering how many "misunderstanders" of Islam there are in Islam (you know, those ones who rape, pillage, bomb, behead, and commit other assorted acts of violence in the name of Islam), I think the show is targeting the wrong audience. Perhaps they should begin with a show targeted to muslims so those "misunderstanders" can learn how Islam is "peace" and all that other stuff.

This is kind of like a sick man lecturing others about health.

This could only happen in the UK.

The problem is not Muslims, Muslim reader it is your texts. Your new one you are raving about is a good starter; let's look at the new translation by M.A.S. Abdel Haleem. One needn't get further than the introduction to the 2nd Sura where Haleem explains that the Sura is called 'the Cow' "named after the story of the cow which the Isrealites were ordered to slaughter (verses 67ff)":-

This is clearly wrong, the akidah (Binding of Isaac Genesis 22) G*d will provide Himself THE LAMB - this week's reading, go back to the source.

It is always a Passover LAMB

The L*RD is my SHEPHERD I'll not want (Psalm 23)
he is not a cowboy.

And from the New Testament, John 1:29-30 John (the Baptist) says: 'Behold the LAMB of G*d who takes away the sins of the world'** 'This is He of whom I said,'After me is a man who is preferred before me, for He was before me' (I know you use this to talk about Mohammed, it clearly isn't).

This is important as a priest has to declare the Passover lamb unblemished and John is from the priestly line of Aaron.

And again in John 10:11-18 Jesus (Isa) says "I am the good shepherd" he is not the good cowboy and we are not cows but sheep who;ve gone astray.

Can you see the blatant differences? The Golden Calf was a grave mistake and not asked for by YY and caused the law not to come to the Isrealites until Yom Kippur.

** This is the purpose of the Bible to reveal the agent of Salvation (G*d) in his Messiah.

In the UK schools are being targeted by Muslims saying silly things, can you teach your children to challenge silly questions which don't deserve answeres with another question. The question our secondary school children were posed was:

"What is the difference between Arabs and Muslims?" doesn't deserve an answer but another question such as "What is the difference between westerners and Christians?" - the rest of the talk was how Muslims were always seen as baddies in American films, there was no time for rapport for kids to retort the fact that this goes 2 ways and you can choose to watch a film, however you cannot choose to filter the media and MEMRI and PMWatch are factual evidence that Westerners and Jews in particular are villified on a daily basis in the Arab media - Fact.

As always, as in schools we're forced into making the assumption that people are against Muslims which is a false premise

What's the interest in a better understanding of Islam?

Posted by: FreeSpeech [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 16, 2008 5:55 AM

sky channel 813 for those who care (?). Questions and Answers always good for a laugh. There's an American with reddish hair and an old geezer who tends to fall asleep half way through the questions. The questions never really get answered though.

Posted by: grobari [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 16, 2008 7:35 AM

A smart move by the Mahometans. And it is telling that the words a better understanding are used rather than the words, a truer understanding. Traditionally in the west, a truer understanding would be synonymous with a better understanding, today with the crippling effects of public education a better understanding can be understood to be a politically more useful understanding.

“We decided to come to South Africa because there is a Muslim community here and we are an English-speaking channel that targets English-speaking nations,” said Ali.

Ah yes ...

I will add that South Africa is:

a) Militarily strategic
b) Loaded with diamonds

Sounds like a target to me all right!
