The mainstream media and Islamic advocacy groups in the United States constantly tell us that female genital mutilation is a cultural practice that has nothing to do with Islam. They do this despite the fact that the among the schools of Islamic jurisprudence, Shafi'is consider circumcision obligatory for women; Hanbalis say it is an honorable custom, but not obligatory; Hanafis say it should be done as a courtesy to the husband. None of the three, you'll note, say that the practice is wrong, immoral, un-Islamic.
Anyway, the upshot of this situation is that while most Westerners take for granted, if they've ever heard of female genital mutilation at all, that it is un-Islamic, it remains only Muslims who haven't gotten this message.

TUZ KHURMATU, Iraq - Sheelan Anwar Omer, a shy 7-year-old Kurdish girl, bounded into her neighbor's house with an ear-to-ear smile, looking for the party her mother had promised.There was no celebration. Instead, a local woman quickly locked a rusty red door behind Sheelan, who looked bewildered when her mother ordered the girl to remove her underpants. Sheelan began to whimper, then tremble, while the women pushed apart her legs and a midwife raised a stainless-steel razor blade in the air. "I do this in the name of Allah!" she intoned.
As the midwife sliced off part of Sheelan's genitals, the girl let out a high-pitched wail heard throughout the neighborhood. As she carried the sobbing child back home, Sheelan's mother smiled with pride.
"This is the practice of the Kurdish people for as long as anyone can remember," said the mother, Aisha Hameed, 30, a housewife in this ethnically mixed town about 100 miles north of Baghdad. "We don't know why we do it, but we will never stop because Islam and our elders require it."
Kurdistan is the only known part of Iraq --and one of the few places in the world--where female circumcision is widespread. More than 60 percent of women in Kurdish areas of northern Iraq have been circumcised, according to a study conducted this year. In at least one Kurdish territory, 95 percent of women have undergone the practice, which human rights groups call female genital mutilation.
The practice, and the Kurdish parliament's refusal to outlaw it, highlight the plight of women in a region with a reputation for having a more progressive society than the rest of Iraq. Advocates for women point to the increasing frequency of honor killings against women and female self-immolations in Kurdistan this year as further evidence that women in the area still face significant obstacles, despite efforts to raise public awareness of circumcision and violence against women. Supporters of female circumcision said the practice, which has been a ritual in their culture for countless generations, is rooted in sayings they attribute to the prophet Muhammad, though the accuracy of those sayings is disputed by other Muslim scholars....
Of course. But they don't seem to be able to dispute the accuracy of those sayings effectually enough to curb this practice where it is found among Muslims.

The ignorance boggles. "We don't know why we do it" - so ignorant, so stupid, it's just incredible. But don't forget - these are just "ordinary Mom's and Dad's."

That statement applies to a lot more than FGM.
It's the basis of the Mohammadan belief system.
Blind belief, inability to question, dogged determination, stupidity.
Jihad: "We don't know why we do it, but we will never stop because Islam and our elders require it."
Terrorism: "We don't know why we do it, but we will never stop because Islam and our elders require it."
Worship of Allah: "We don't know why we do it, but we will never stop because Islam and our elders require it."
Worship of Mohammad: They do know why they do that, he 'was' the perfect man, and 'is' the perfect role model, and they will never stop worshipping Mohammad because Islam and their elders require it.
Islam is no 'religion' for intelligent people.
But it suits the 'I don't know why we do it' crowd perfectly...

If anyone would like more graphic info on this barbarity, AlwayOnWatch/The-Gathering-Storm has a recording of an interview we had on this in repsonse to the New York Times article on "cutting". The related entry on AlwaysOnWatch also has photos and information I sent to her just before the interview so that the AOW audience could see what FGM really is.
Send AOW an email and ask which archive it is. It will be worth your time.

If muslim male genital mutilation were prescribed for slaves of allah, on the other hand, those clerics that always say that unvelied women are asking for rape, and that muslim males cannot be held responsible for their actions in the presence of women who don't look like walking tents would no longer need to jump to the defense of their followers if they committed such heinous crimes against infidel women.

As a mother of a four-year-old year girl this is very hard for me to take. I cannot for the life of me understand why the world cannot stand up and ban this. FGM is the worst thing a mother can do to her daughter. Only an evil ideology like Islam can propagate something this evil. I will never ever cease fighting all that is Islam, especially FGM. And so should all loving, caring mothers (fathers, too). A mother allowing her daughter to be infibulated, in my opinion, loses the privilege of being called a mother: she is nothing less than a monster.

Mohammad was asked by a woman of his time ~who performed this sexual sadistic mutilation~ if it was acceptible to Islam.
He approved of it, only suggesting that the cutting "not be too extreme".
Whatever the hell that meant.

There are many things in this world that DESERVE to be hated. Such as Fascism, Naziism, and Islam.
By calling us "Haters," the Mohammedans and their insane Apologists are trying to take away our natural and reasonable ability to hate things that deserve to be hated.
So, if I'm called a "Hater," I counter with "Islam, like Naziism, deserves to be hated. Islam is evil, is deserves to be hated." Key word: "Deserves"
I don't mince words anymore, and I'm no longer afraid of being called a Hater. Because I have the "Courage of my convictions" (Rollo May term) from everything I've learned here at JW and DW coupled with world events. (I can also turn the "racist" and "bigot" slurs right back against the Mo's and their Apologists, too).

Since FGM is supposed to be an ancient custom, handed down from long before Islam, here's a question: do the remaining non-Moslems in the Mid-East also practice the custom? Specifically do the Coptic Egyptians, or the Christian Ethiopians, or the various remnant Christian, Jewish, and syncretic communities in Moslem lands?

According to our intellectual superior and convert to islam, AM, ONLY African muslims and Middle Eastern Christians engage in this barbaric practice which, of course, is not islamic. And he provided statistics on domestic violence which prove that Western men beat their wives more than muslim men beat theirs. Of course he doesn't mention that domestic violence is illegal in the West but is legal in islam. If any other Middle Easterners practice this vile form of mutilation today, I've never heard of it.
It is amusing when muslims claim that a barbaric practice like FGM "preceded" islam. Islam appropriated the Biblical prophets for its own doctrine despite the span of centuries between their existence and the advent of islam, but muslims are quick to deny that FGM is an islamic practice although 99% of FGM victims are muslims. They many not have invented this cruel perversion but they certainly adopted it and continue to fervently practice it.

As I understand it, some Copts do practise FGM. However, as they have had more contact with the rest of the church universal, they are gradually abandoning it.
I think the Ethiopian Orthodox also do it; but again, I think that with greater contact with Christians from other branches of the faith, they are coming to see that it is a destructive custom which ought to be abandoned.
I would expect the African Christians to drop this custom quicker than the Muslims will.
