Abdullah el-Faisal Update. This report is from earlier in the month, but still merits attention. "Exile hate preacher’s web rants," by Simon Hughes for The Sun, March 13:

Sinister Abdullah el-Faisal broadcasts his wicked gospel live to the UK over the internet six nights a week.

Misnomer of the month: neither Gospel nor "good news."

His rants from 4,500 miles away in his native Jamaica are also recorded and available online.
Faisal, 48, is known to be recruiting fanatics whose real identities and locations are shielded from authorities by code names.

He also urges the setting up of a network of secret mosques where extremist views can be voiced.

Faisal is banned from Britain following his deportation after a seven-year prison sentence for soliciting murder.

Last night his rants from Jamaica — visited last week by Prince Harry — triggered demands for Foreign Secretary William Hague to intervene.

Among those radicalised by Faisal is English-born 7/7 bomber's widow Samantha Lewthwaite, allegedly now wanted in Kenya over a terror plot. Faisal also has ties to notorious preachers Abu Hamza and Abu Qatada.

More than 40 of his followers have been given code names beginning with the prefix AT — indicating his website Authentic Tawheed — followed by a number.

In one broadcast he advocated jihad, or holy war, saying it was his followers' duty to "conquer nations".

Last night senior Tory MP Patrick Mercer said: "He should be closed down."

You can't make this stuff up: "Philips, who was born in Jamaica and raised in Canada, spoke in Frankfurt earlier this week on the subject 'Islam, the Misunderstood Religion'."

"Islamist preacher ordered to leave Germany," from Deutsche Presse-Agentur, April 21 (thanks to Josephine):

A radical Muslim preacher has been ordered by German authorities to depart the country immediately. The move comes after he attended an Islamist rally in Frankfurt that took place despite the objections of city leaders.
Citing security concerns, the authorities said if he doesn’t depart on his own, he could be arrested and forcibly deported.
Philips, who was born in Jamaica and raised in Canada, spoke in Frankfurt earlier this week on the subject “Islam, the Misunderstood Religion” alongside German Islamist preacher Pierre Vogel – who authorities have no way to deport – after a court allowed the event over the objections of Frankfurt officials.
Arid Uka, the 21-year-old Kosovar who has admitted to killing two US airmen in Frankfurt in March, is thought to have established contact to radical Islamist preachers including Vogel before the shooting.
Police said up to 1,500 people, separated by gender, attended the rally, where Philips appeared as a surprise guest. The 64-year-old has been on a tour of sorts around Europe, recently surfacing in Denmark.
Although Philips has failed to deliver extremist messages during his European appearances, he’s attracted plenty of protesters, including 500 in Frankfurt.
Philips, who runs an online university has attracted the ire of officials for his previously inflammatory messages and alleged links to Muslim extremists.
He is alleged to have preached that homosexuals should received the death penalty, although in Frankfurt he said he doesn’t hate gays at all.

Yeah, uh, nothing personal. Just capital punishment under Sharia.

In previous interviews he has also accused Western governments of oppressing him by falsely associating him with terrorism.

With apologies to Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You'll Misunderstand Islam. It happens in Jamaica, too, again demonstrating what should be a striking uniformity of the ways in which Islam's vaunted peaceful teachings are so terribly "misunderstood." That should suggest a stronger motivating factor than this or that conflict that is cast as "nationalist," or the grievance du jour. But we're not supposed to talk about that.

We do anyway. "Jamaican Imam Abdullah el-Faisal wants to be next terror big, U.S. fears," by Alison Gendar and James Gordon Meek for the New York Daily News, November 22 (thanks to Twostellas):

Counterterrorism agents in New York and Washington are keeping tabs on a Jamaican imam whose death-spewing sermons in English raise fears he'll radicalize American Muslims.

You'd think "radicalization" were like catching a cold -- it's just going to happen. What should be of interest is why the message continues to find an audience and willing foot soldiers, beyond the usual stopgap "underlying causes."

The NYPD intelligence division, CIA and FBI are concerned Sheikh Abdullah el-Faisal is becoming a new Anwar al-Awlaki, the Yemeni Al Qaeda cleric who went from preaching to plotting.
"El-Faisal is focused on propaganda," one U.S. counterterror official in Washington told the Daily News. "But the last few years, he's dabbled in operational things like recruitment and facilitation."
He also inspired Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad and failed airplane underwear bomber Farouk Abdulmutallab.
"His reach goes far beyond Jamaica," the U.S. official said. "He's trying to expand his network in Africa and Asia."
A law enforcement source said El-Faisal "has a big ego" and hates "playing second fiddle" to perceived rival Awlaki - targeted for death by the U.S. for his links to the Fort Hood shootings and Abdulmutallab.
El-Faisal started out giving fiery sermons in London that were posted online by New York-based extremist website Revolution Muslim, which regards him as an in-house imam.
Then he graduated to promoting terrorism, counterterror officials said.
"Be a suicide bomber and die with dignity, honor and prestige," El-Faisal said in a typical speech.
Known as Imam Al-Jamaikee, he preached to Al Qaeda shoe bomber Richard Reid, 9/11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and 2005 British train bomber Germaine Lindsay before the U.K. jailed him on a terror rap for four years.
Experts see a direct link between the rise of English-speaking radical imams and the increase in homegrown terrorists.
"The number of American wanna-be jihadists has increased since more English speakers landed on the scene," said Mitch Silber, head of the NYPD's intelligence analysis division.
"It's more effective ... than someone ranting in Arabic pointing a finger at Western audiences."
El-Faisal is charismatic like Awlaki, but "willing to say things that would make even Awlaki turn pale," said terror expert Evan Kohlmann.
El-Faisal, who declined interview requests through his "agent," once said an "aim and objective of jihad is to kill [nonbelievers] to lessen the population."

To lessen the population of unbelievers, that is.

An island insider who knows El-Faisal said he's "becoming very frustrated" that the Islamic Council of Jamaica muzzled him from speaking in mosques since he returned in February. So he's recruiting through sermons posted on YouTube.
The Kenyan government jailed him early this year, and had to pay $500,000 for a charter jet to fly him home because no airline would....

Now where on earth could the British have gotten that crazy idea?

This CNN story about Sheikh Abdullah El-Faisal centers on his trying to shake CNN down for a large sum of money in exchange for a formal interview; I've left that part out of what's below. What is noteworthy is how he has been captured on tape speaking forthrightly about jihad and killing infidels, but when asked about such statements now he claims they were "misinterpreted," and outright lies about what he actually said. It is a good example of the duplicity we often see from Islamic supremacist spokesmen in the West.

"Shakedown by Jamaica's radical sheik," by Drew Griffin and Todd Schwarzschild for CNN, September 1:

(CNN) -- He has influenced convicted terrorists such as Richard Reid, the so-called shoe-bomber. His sermons were found in the apartment of suicide bombers who struck London, England, in 2005. Even one of the 9/11 plotters is said to have been a follower of Sheik Abdullah El-Faisal.

Now in Jamaica, El-Faisal is less than a two-hour flight from the United States. No airline will allow him on board; he is widely thought to be on U.S. and UK no-fly lists. But history suggests El-Faisal might not need to travel to be influential among jihadists bent on violence against the U.S. and other Western nations.

The authorities on the Caribbean island keep tabs on him. Jamaica's Muslim leadership has banned him from preaching in established mosques, just in case his radical rhetoric stirs a Jamaican jihad. That's why we came here, at El-Faisal's invitation, to find out his plans. [...]

Sheik Abdullah El-Faisal grew up in Jamaica as a Christian, but he converted to Islam at 16, he says, after visiting the South American nation of Guyana.

He then went on to study Islam in Saudi Arabia before moving to London. That's where his career as a firebrand preacher took off among English-speaking, radical Islamists. In the 1990s, his sermons at the Brixton Mosque in south London, a hotbed of radical preaching, were often taped and shared among converts to Islam. Zacarias Moussaoui, convicted for his role in the September 11 attacks, and Richard Reid attended the mosque at the time.

El-Faisal's message included calls for killing Americans, Jews, Hindus and nonbelievers (anyone who doesn't believe in Mohammed and Islam). British counterterrorism officials began to take note of the preacher known as "The Jamaican."

They uncovered tape recordings in which El-Faisal encouraged Muslims to take up jihad, with titles including "No Peace with the Jews," "Declaration of War" and "Them v. Us."

British authorities say they found one of El-Faisal's taped sermons in the apartment of Germaine Lindsay, a fellow Jamaican and one of the suicide bombers who attacked London's subway system in 2005. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian student charged with trying to blow up an airliner as it was approaching Detroit, Michigan, on Christmas Day, mentioned El-Faisal in a blog he wrote while in London.

British prosecutors decided El-Faisal's sermons went beyond rhetoric.

In 2003, he was charged with soliciting murder and was sentenced to seven years in prison. But four years later, he was released and deported to Jamaica. He didn't stay there long, making several visits to Africa to preach and lecture.

Kenya deported him in January after he addressed Somali immigrants, fearing he would incite terrorism. His arrest led to riots in which five people were killed. But the Kenyan government had to spend a reported $550,000 to get rid of him; no commercial carrier would take him back to Jamaica. So Kenya had to hire a private jet to fly him home. [...]

El-Faisal says he is no longer the radical cleric jailed in Britain.

"That was the old sheik," he tells me. "I have reformed since then. I have become wiser. I no longer say things that offend people."

El-Faisal says he really never meant to offend anyone. "The British misinterpreted my teachings," he said. "I spoke of jihad, and the British thought that meant killing."

I pointed out that "killing" is exactly what he did say in Britain, and on the tapes listened to by radical followers across the world.

I pointed out his exact quotes: that Muslims should fight and kill Jews, Christians, Americans, Hindus and other nonbelievers.

"The way forward can never be the ballot. The way forward is the bullet." That's a quote from one of his speeches recorded by British authorities.

And in the United States, a group called Revolution Muslim looks up to El-Faisal as its spiritual leader.

Last year, one of the group's leaders told me "Allah used the word to terrorize, so we terrorize the Kaffirs (non-Muslims)." It turns out that quote actually came from El-Faisal himself.

El-Faisal casually dismissed the Revolution Muslim group. He says he does not encourage people to kill, never has and never will.

When I told him that a blog on RevolutionMuslim.com had praised alleged Fort Hood, Texas, shooter Major Nidal Hasan, he told me he "would not congratulate" the attacker.

I asked whether he felt any guilt that one of the July 7, 2005, London subway bombers, a fellow Jamaican who followed his teachings, had committed suicide while also killing dozens of innocent civilians. He said it made him sad that "the brother killed himself."

When I pressed whether he felt any personal responsibility for influencing the suicide attack, the sheik became agitated.

"How can they prove I influenced them to try and commit terrorism?" he asked. "I did not direct anyone to try and blow up a plane; I did not tell the London bombers to do what they did."

"It makes me sad they committed suicide and that they killed innocent people, 52 of them." El-Faisal says all the so-called terrorists who have listened to his preaching have most likely listened to other preachers, too. He feels he is being singled out and is now confined to his native Jamaica without any direct means of support....

Chances are, we'll later be told that this was "taken out of context." No controversial statement by a Muslim figure has ever been taken in its "proper" context, you know. "Muslim leader blasts gay lifestyle," by Karyl Walker for the Jamaica Observer, February 1:

President of the Islamic Council of Jamaica, Mustafa Muhammad, says he agrees with the Sharia law which prescribes death for people who openly flaunt homosexual behaviour.
Muhammad did not mince words as he lashed out against what he described as an unclean, unnatural lifestyle.
"It is illegal and in the Sharia law the punishment is death. If you follow Christianity it is a crime in the sight of God. He destroyed a whole city because of this thing. It is an ungodly practice and I apologise to no one for this," Muhammad said. [...]
Muhammad made sure to state that he was against the killing of gays in Jamaica.
"This can only be done in a country that is being run by Islam," he said.

And which system of laws would he like to see in Jamaica?
