"The whole world stood up on his feet because of a cartoon of Muhammad, but when all monasteries and churches destroyed, no one responds." indeed. "Serbian Orthodox Monastery of Assumption of the Virgin Destroyed," by Kisha D. Dorado for OCP News Service, January 4 (thanks to James):

Belgrade: Albanians last night completely destroyed the monastery “Assumption of the Virgin” in southern Serbia. Monastery of the Assumption of Virgin” [sic] which is located in the vicinity of Vladicin Han was vandalized last night. The door was smashed, and the entire interior were broken. The money from the candle sales and other item inside the monastery is stolen, and all the icons were smashed. Mother Paraskeva (62 years old) confirmed this information. She was very upset fear for her safety. “I’m afraid they will come back, but I’m not going anywhere. I’m here alone and old, but let them come, someone has to defend, “said Paraskeva.

“There’s nothing left, this is terrible! The whole world stood up on his feet because of a cartoon of Muhammad, but when all monasteries and churches destroyed, no one responds,” she added.Asked whether he knows who could have done this, Paraskeva replied that everything is known, but that no one will be interested in this case.

Albanians from Kosovo were organized with the intention of coming to destroy the Serbian monasteries in this area! This is not the first time something like this happens. Last year on Good Friday they attacked me, I did not have a stick, who knows if I managed to defend myself, “said the visibly shaken Paraskeva.

I am not in favor of book-burning. I'd rather people read and know the Qur'an, and thereby understand what we face as Infidels. But what is noteworthy about this is that this is exactly the kind of law that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has been pushing for years at the United Nations -- and that many American journalists and politicians recently called for in the wake of the Muhammad video riots. Everyone seems to have forgotten the basic principle that no one controls anyone else's reactions, or bears responsibility for them, and the freedom of speech is on the ropes all over the West.

"Serb Detained After Quran Burning Photos Posted," from the Associated Press, October 31 (thanks to all who sent this in):

A Serbian man has been detained after pictures posted on Facebook appeared to show him setting the Muslim holy book on fire using a lighter.

Prosecutor for cybercrime Branko Stamenkovic said Wednesday that the man is suspected of inciting "religious hatred and intolerance." He faces up to eight years in prison.

Stamenkovic identified the suspect as Predrag Cosovic from the capital of Belgrade. He says police detained Cosovic on Tuesday, a day after he allegedly posted the photos of the Quran burning....

But...but...I thought all the Muslims in the Balkans were staunch "moderates" who loved America and embraced Western values!

"Serbia: Thousands of Muslim football fans protest anti-Islam film," from AKI, September 21 (thanks to C. Cantoni):

Novi Pazar, 21 Sept. (AKI) - Several thousand fans from a local football club in Serbia's Muslim-majority Sandzak region held a peaceful march on Friday against a US-made film deemed insulting to Islam.

Defying a ban on political slogans at the march from town square in the main town of Novi Pazar, supporters of Torcida Sandzak football club waved banners reading ‘Freedom for Palestine, Afganistan and Libya’, as well as 'The Prophet is in my heart' - the only one sanctioned by local authorities.

There was a heavy police presence at the march, where protesters also waved the flags of Turkey and Bosnia.

"The Islamic community in Serbia did not take part in organising the protest but it has its full support, as Muslims have the right to protest against such insults," said Sandzak's mufti Muamer Zukorlic....

"Circumcision is obligatory (O: for both men and women. For men it consists of removing the prepuce from the penis, and for women, removing the prepuce (Ar. bazr) of the clitoris (n: not the clitoris itself, as some mistakenly assert). (A: Hanbalis hold that circumcision of women is not obligatory but sunna, while Hanafis consider it a mere courtesy to the husband.)" -- 'Umdat al-Salik e4.3

We're constantly told that female genital mutilation is a cultural practice that has nothing to do with Islam, and are warned that only greasy Islamophobes think otherwise. Yet we just recently saw a Muslim leader in Britain, Mohammed Abdul, advocating it, and it is clear even from the whitewashed translation from 'Umdat al-Salik above that it is justified in Islamic law.

"Two held over 'genital mutilation,'" from the Lancashire Evening Post, May 3 (thanks to Paul):

Two men have been arrested in Birmingham by police investigating claims that female genital mutilation is being offered in the UK.

West Midlands Police said a 55-year-old and a 61-year-old were arrested after officers from the force's public protection unit attended three separate addresses....

The men were arrested on suspicion of offences contrary to the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003.

Officers went to properties on Stratford Road, Sparkhill, Trafalgar Road, Moseley and Kingstanding Road, Kingstanding....

It's one thing to advise against it on religious grounds, but this missive comes from Aceh, where the imposition of Sharia has only gotten more intensive, and morality policing is already well off the rails. It is quite another matter when such a prohibition becomes grounds for harassment and intervention by law enforcement of one form or another, as is also frequently the case in Saudi Arabia. "Indonesia/Islam: Aceh Ulema Warns Muslims Against Observing Valentine’s Day," from the International Islamic News Agency, February 6:

BANDA ACEH (Indonesia),14 Rabi al-Awwal/6 Feb (IINA)-Ulema in Aceh have warned Muslims, the younger generation in particular, that observing Valentine’s Day is not allowed in Islam and against Sharia law that is in force in all of Aceh province.

“It is haram for Muslims to observe Valentine’s Day because it does not accord with Islamic Sharia” Tgk Feisal, general secretary of the Aceh Ulema Association (HUDA), said on Monday.

In Islam, he said, love should not be expressed or shown on a certain day only but every day. “Therefore, Islam’s younger generation should not participate in the celebration of a foreign festivity,” he said.

Faisal Ali who is also chairman of the Aceh branch of Nahdlatul Ulama called on Muslim parents, especially those in Aceh, to instruct and supervise their children in the matter.

“We must prevent the Muslim younger generation in Aceh from being poisoned by a culture that contradicts our Muslim values. Therefore, everybody, parents in particular, should give our youth the proper guidance,” he said.

He also called on the government to uphold and implement Islamic Sharia in “serious and sincere ways and not just out of political expediency or momentarily.”

“Islamic Sharia cannot prevail in Aceh as expected if it is not supported fully by the government and other parties in authority,” he said.

The government must also watch out for youths participating in Valentine’s Day activities in Aceh, he said.

"We have no right to be naive." Indeed. "Bosnian Serb leader calls for referendum on scrapping country's top war crimes court," by Irena Knezevic for The Associated Press, April 13 (thanks to George):

The Bosnian Serb leader has accused the international community of helping Muslim Bosniaks create an Islamic state and claims the country's top war crimes court is an illegal institution that demonizes his people.

Milorad Dodik told the Bosnian Serb Parliament Wednesday that the State Court had so far convicted ten times more Serbs than any other ethnicity, and called on lawmakers to approve a referendum for those living in the Bosnian Serb part of the country that will decide whether they should continue to answer to the court....

Dodik claimed Wednesday that the court continues to present Serbs as the sole guilty party in the war, and is thus justifying international efforts to take away Serb autonomy. He accused the international community of helping Muslim Bosniaks create an Islamic state.

"We have no right to be naive," he told the Bosnian Serb Parliament. "The creation of an Islamic state is a project... Unfortunately some of the people representing the international community who sit in Sarajevo and elsewhere in the world for their own reasons support the realization of that Bosniak goal."...

The logic is hard to follow: the economy is tanking, and Muslim factions are at each other's throats, but Muslim sovereignty is of the utmost urgency. And that's not all. One cleric claims "Bosniaks (Muslims of Slav origin) are the only people of Europe who do not have their own exclusive state."

It is a strikingly ignorant statement, but also a very revealing one with respect to his intentions. According to that argument, we should see Europe rent asunder according to every ethnolinguistic or cultural group on the continent. Violent Walloon separatist movements, Cornish liberation armies, and a gaggle of frustrated Frisians.

But no, of course, Muamer Zukorlic just wants a free pass for Muslim interests. An update on this story. "Serbia's Sandzak languishes amid bitter Muslim divide," by Pierre Glachant for the Associated Press, January 10:

NOVI PAZAR, Serbia (AFP) - Overwhelmed by cheap Chinese competition and divided by rival Muslim groups, Serbia's once-thriving Sandzak region is languishing in a deep economic and social malaise that has sparked the first calls for autonomy.
The remote area tucked between Kosovo and Montenegro was once the centre of the Balkans' black-market textile industry, with factories churning out high-quality replicas of brand-name jeans and shoes to hungry local markets squeezed by sanctions.
But today its main city Novi Pazar is a picture of decline, with many factories standing idle and more than 50 percent of the population estimated at 400,000 to 500,000 unemployed, local officials said.
Teenagers hang around in the city's main square with little to do. Most are glum about their future prospects, and complain about politicians who promise more than they deliver and "muftis who drive around in BMWs or SUVs". [...]
The economic crisis, however, has fanned internal tensions in the predominantly Muslim Sandzak region -- which borders Kosovo, which unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008 in a move not recognised by Belgrade.
In recent years, a bitter battle has been waged for influence among Sandzak's Muslim religious community, stoked by two rival muftis. So far incidents have been minor, mainly skirmishes over rival property claims.
On one side of the divide is a group led by Adem Zilkic, which is based in the capital Belgrade and recognised by the Serbian government as the official interlocutor for the country's Muslims.
But his influence is being undercut by the mufti of Novi Pazar, Muamer Zukorlic, who accuses his rival of kowtowing to Belgrade and who set up a rival organisation in 2007.
Zukorlic recognises the spiritual authority of Mustafa Ceric, the mufti of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo, which was the center of the former Yugoslavia's scattered Muslim community before the bloody break-up in the 1990s.
In recent weeks, Zukorlic has called for autonomy for the Sandzak region, saying that the "Bosniaks (Muslims of Slav origin) are the only people of Europe who do not have their own exclusive state."

He goes from speaking of an "exclusive state" to a tap dance about a "multi-ethnic region" in the next paragraph. In other words, sure, it won't be all Muslim right away, but you know who will be in charge.

"We are asking that Serbia give us a degree of sovereignty, within the framework of constitutional order," Zukorlic said, adding that this initiative "does not mean ethnic autonomy, but autonomy for a multi-ethnic region," with a Serb minority.
This is a "test of mutual confidence between the Serb authorities and the Bosniaks" but "Serb authorities are showing no confidence, not granting us the slightest degree of autonomy," he complained.
The rift between the two Muslim communities -- unusual in a region more used to inter-ethnic conflict -- is growing and Zukorlic has even invited the European Union to send a monitoring mission to the area. Brussels has not officially responded to the request.
For residents like Azra, the clash is a major concern.
"Relations between Serbs and Muslims are better then [sic] among the Muslims themselves," she said....

Of course, when people point out the activities of jihadists in the Balkans, the Commentary crowd accuses them of supporting the enormities and crimes, real and/or trumped-up, of the local opposition to that jihad. Of course, that accusation neither logically follows nor accords with fact. "Bosnia: Muslims 'wanted to draw NATO into war,'" from AKI, October 7 (thanks to C. Cantoni):

The Hague, 7 Oct. (AKI) - Bosnian Muslims wanted to draw NATO into their country's 1992-1995 war to help them against the Serbs, British general Michael Rose told the United Nations war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia on Thursday.

Serbs deliberately targeted civilians with sniper fire in the capital Sarajevo in order to intimidate them, said Rose, who served as chief of the UN peacekeepers in Bosnia in 1994.

He was testifying at the trial of wartime Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, who is conducting his own defence.

But cross-examined by Karadzic, Rose conceded that there had been some cases in which Muslims fired at their own people to blame the Serbs and trigger foreign intervention.

He also said that reports in western media on Serb attacks on eastern town of Gorazde were often exaggerated.

Karadzic is being tried on eleven counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. The indictment is focusing on the shelling of Sarajevo and a massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the eastern town of Srebrenica in July 1995....

Islamic Tolerance Alert from that bastion of Islamic moderation, the Balkans: "Muslims threaten ethnic Serb over prayer meeting," from Serbianna, September 30 (thanks to George):

Ethnic Serb Darko Panovic received a death threat from an “unknown” source after announcing plans for a Christian prayer meeting in a city of Novi Pazar that hosts large number of Muslims

Panovic had plans to hold a prayer meeting on the corner of two streets during which time church music and prayers were to be played out of a car with speakers.

Panovic asked the police to provide security for his October 10 prayer in Novi Pazar.

Panovic said that death threats came after a Muslim web site sandzakpress.net published a “report” from Panovic’s group describing how Christian Serbs are planing a march in the “heart” of Novi Pazar which they deem as a Muslim capital of an independent state of Sandzak that some adherents in that area seek to make.

Sandzakpress.net claims that it’s aims are a “timely and truthful information for citizens of Sandzak, as to the northern so to the southern [Montenegrin] parts with goals to fight for elementary, individual and collective rights.”

The obvious Islamic green background and the moon suggests, indeed, what this group, with a deceptive name connoting journalism, is fighting for.

The group also has a YouTube SandzakPRESS’s Channel that is littered with Islamic extremist themes and interviews with their Imam Zukorlic and his right hand man Imam Plojevic who was recently involved in an attack on a school principal.

As with all islamist sites, this one also follows the established Islamic presentation of “qualified tolerance” where tolerance of Christians and Jews is presented first only to be qualified inside the paragraph....

There is more.

The Rape of Serbian Women
by Stella L. Jatras

(Letter to Phyllis Chesler of Chesler Chronicles)

Dear Phyllis,

I apologize for the length of my letter, but there is so much to be covered on this subject in order to do it justice.

In your commentary of 28 July entitled, "Is Marital Rape a Crime in America or Is It a Muslim Religious Right?," Chesler Chronicles, you wrote: "In this regard, rape was declared a crime against humanity by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. [ICTY] I was tentatively supposed to testify about Rape Trauma Syndrome in the case in The Hague, but there was no funding to either protect or relocate the women who were prepared to testify, and thus, these trials were canceled."

My concern is the distorted application of the rape declaration by the ICTY. Anything from the ICTY, a bought and paid for tool of the western powers, can only be seen in light of the objectives of those powers, especially Washington. A major objective -- which was achieved -- was to make the Muslims the victims in Bosnia and Serbs the villains. Paradoxically, that contrived victimization is itself a weapon in depicting any concerns about Islam here -- including victimization of women, not as helping protect human rights, but as a propaganda tool to justify discrimination, racism, etc.

In that context, the accusations of mass rape - and specifically of "Serb rape camps," which were never shown to have existed anywhere -- was part of a calculated campaign of depicting Muslims-white-hats and Serbs-black-hats. I draw your attention to a letter written by Herb Brin of Heritage Southwest Jewish Press to President Clinton on 14 April 1994: "When I visited the Serbian front a year ago, I learned to my dismay that the rape story was a total concoction. In wars, rapes occur--but in the hundreds of thousands and as a means of so-called 'ethnic cleansing?' This was incredible and false." Certainly rapes are committed in wartime, even worse in communal wars. There is no evidence that Bosnia was any worse (or better) than anywhere else where comparable conflicts have taken place. Tragically, the crime of the actual rapes that occurred was compounded by the use of false accusations of rape as a propaganda weapon, which is what the west and the Muslims did. Such false accusations both paste a damning accusation on the party not guilty of the wrongdoing, while devaluing the horror of actual rapes committed.

The fact that the ICTY declares rape a crime against humanity -- a fact obvious to any normal person, ICTY or no ICTY -- should not be given much weight, given the source. In fact, it serves to devalue the problem of rape during wartime because the ICTY shamefully used what should have been a principled legal finding as a blatant political propaganda weapon.

There is no question that even one rape is unspeakable, but with all due respect, I would like to present the other side of the story regarding the rapes that occurred in Bosnia, specifically the rape of Serbian women which were deemed to be insignificant by the media and by The Hague. Instead of being honest brokers in a nasty civil war, we took sides against the Serbian people. Here I quote Yohanan Ramati, Director of the Jerusalem Institute for Western Defense, "This organized anti-Serb and pro-Muslim propaganda should cause anyone believing in democracy and free speech serious concerns. It recalls Hitler's propaganda against the allies in World War II. Facts are twisted and, when convenient, disregarded."

I offer the following:

"Former Yugoslavia: MANIPULATED HORROR. (Translated From French) 'Ethnic cleansing, rapes: the war in the Balkans is already sufficiently horrible without the need to exaggerate the consequences'." [Source: Le Point, March 13, 1993, page 34]

For Envoye Special, Jerome Boney went to investigate on the spot by going to Tuzla, the city mentioned in all the reports. He confided his astonishment in the last February 4 broadcast: He reported, "When I was 50 kilometers from Tuzla, I heard: 'Go to the Tuzla gymnasium, there are 4,000 raped women.' At 20 kilometers the figure went down to 400. At 100 kilometer there were no more than 40. And on the spot I found 4 women who agreed to testify." - Jacques Merlino (France 2).

Unnoticed by the media was the submission on December 18, 1992, of the length report #S24491 by the UN Security Council to the General Assembly. The report included depositions by Serb rape victims. Yet while that report was receiving minimal circulation at the UN, the news media were focusing on undocumented claims that Serbian soldiers had committed as many as 60,000 rape of Muslim women.

The Jan 4 1993 issue of Newsweek reported that up to 50,000 Muslim women had been raped in Bosnia. Tom Post, a contributor to the article, explained that the estimate of 50,000 rapes was based on interviews with 28 women. #S24491 which was filed three weeks before this January 4th 1993 article appeared in Newsweek was not mentioned.

So which is it, 60,000 as reported by the majority of the news media, or 50,000 rapes as reported in 1993 by Newsweek, considering both exaggerated the numbers, or whatever number the spin doctors felt would make the best headline?

Jewish publication ISRAPUNDIT reported: "Such was the false tale spread of rapes by Serbian soldiers of Muslim women to supposedly increase the Serbian population in Kosovo and Bosnia. While rapes by Serbian soldiers were not proven in the end, there were rapes of Serbian women by the mujahedeen and members of the Kosovo Liberation Army. Both were funded by Saudi Arabia and Iran. You know the Saudis, they're the ones whose 'road map for peace' is what Israel is adhering to as the same Saudis who fund Hamas (with the Iranians) to fire missiles at Israeli day care centers. The US State Department calls all that diplomacy."

Jared Israel (Emperor's Clothes) offers, "Susan Sontag and the rape of American thinking," (5/30/00) where he states that Sontag claims that Bosnian Serb troops indulged in: "The rape by military orders of tens of thousands of women throughout Serb-captured Bosnia. By military order, mind you," writes Israel. He continues. "Now keep in mind that the Bosnian Serb army numbered somewhere around 30,000 men, "many of whom were engaged in desperate military engagements."

"Aside from the absurdity of this small, hard-pressed army, stretched out along a one thousand mile front, raping tens of thousands of women, the mass rape stories rely on a false impression, carefully cultivated by the Western media: that the Bosnian Serb army was an aggressive invading force that "captured territory". This is wrong on both counts: they were mainly a defensive force and they were in fact defending their own territory."

In her article 'Yugoslavia Seen Through a Dark Glass," analyst Diana Johnstone offers the following:

"No one denies that many rapes occurred during the civil wars in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, or that rape is a serious violation of human rights. So is war, for that matter. From the start, however, inquiry into rape in Bosnia-Herzegovina focused exclusively on accusations that Serbs were raping Muslim women as part of a deliberate strategy. The most inflated figures, freely extrapolated by multiplying the number of known cases by large factors, were readily accepted by the media and international organizations. No interest was shown in detailed and documented reports of rapes of Serbian women by Muslims or Croats. The late Nora Beloff, former chief political correspondent of the London Observer, described her own search for verification of the rape charges in a letter to The Daily Telegraph (January 19, 1993). The British Foreign Office conceded that the rape figures being bandied about were totally uncorroborated, and referred her to the Danish government, then chairing the European Union. Copenhagen agreed that the reports were unsubstantiated, but kept repeating them. Both said that the EU had taken up the "rape atrocity" issue at its December 1992 Edinburgh summit exclusively on the basis of a German initiative. In turn, Fran Wild, in charge of the Bosnian Desk in the German Foreign Ministry, told Ms. Beloff that the material on Serb rapes came partly from the Izetbegovic government and partly from the Catholic charity Caritas in Croatia. No effort had been made to seek corroboration from more impartial sources. Despite the absence of solid and comprehensive information, a cottage industry has since developed around the theme. See: Norma von Ragenfeld-Feldman, "The Victimization of Women: Rape and the Reporting of Rape in Bosnia-Herzegovina, 1992-1993," Dialogue (Paris), No. 21, March 1997; and Diana Johnstone, "Selective Justice in The Hague," The Nation, Sept. 22, 1997, pp. 16-21."

And then there is also the case of a pregnant Bosnian Muslim woman who was registered in Switzerland as an asylum seeker and a victim of rape by Serbian soldiers who subsequently gave birth to a black baby. Nothing more was heard of the case.

Although I am not Serbian, I have complete empathy with the sentiments of a Serbian lady friend who wrote: "I still hurt whenever I remember all of the false accusations leveled against Serbs for having run 'rape camps' in various parts of former Yugoslavia. Those accusations were lies. Later on, life began to imitate the dark art of propaganda journalism, when slave-brothels and trafficking in women indeed began flourishing under the NATO/Muslim occupation. Nobody ever came back to apologize to the Serbs for those false accusations, even though the evidence was transparently concocted and thoroughly refuted."

I believe you answered your own question regarding, "is it a Muslim Religious Right?" It appears to be so.

Respectfully submitted,
Stella L. Jatras

As a career military officer's wife, Stella Jatras has traveled widely and has lived in many foreign countries where she not only learned about other cultures but also became very knowledgeable regarding world affairs and world politics. With the advent of the war in Bosnia, Mrs. Jatras immediately recognized the bias of the Western media and the Clinton administration's flawed foreign policy in the Balkans and began her efforts to present to the American people a more accurate view of that tragic situation. Stella Jatras lived in Moscow for two years (where her husband, George, was the Senior Air Attaché), and while there, worked in the Political Section of the US Embassy. The Serbian Orthodox Church is attempting to strike back against the dhimmi governments that abetted the jihad in Kosovo. From the BBC, with thanks to Ali Dashti:

The Serbian Orthodox Church has filed a lawsuit against the UK, France, Germany and Italy for allegedly failing to protect its churches in Kosovo.

Bishop Artemije of Raska and Prizren, who lodged the complaint, told Serbian media that the four nations had allowed ethnic Albanians to ransack churches.

The state-run Politika paper quotes him saying dozens of Orthodox churches and religious monuments had been destroyed.

Nato-led troops took control of mainly-Muslim Kosovo in June 1999.

The international community forced Serb troops and authorities out of the province amid escalating violence against separatist ethnic Albanian rebels.

Mob attacks

Clashes have continued between the majority Albanian population and the Serb minority since the Nato-led troops moved into Kosovo.

An outbreak of violence in March, in which Serb-owned homes and churches were attacked, left 19 people dead.

Bishop Artemije said the UK, France, Italy and Germany had failed to protect the Orthodox Church's property, followers and institutions.

Monasteries, medieval icons and frescos are among the religious sites to have been destroyed, he said, with 80 churches burned since 1999.
