Sri Lanka expels 161 foreign Muslim clerics who misunderstood Islam

161 Muslim clerics were "not teaching a moderate form of Islam," according to some of the local Muslims. How is it that 161 clerics who had devoted their lives to following and teaching Islam came to misunderstand their peaceful religion so profoundly?

Sri Lanka has reportedly ordered 161 foreign Muslim preachers to leave the country for flouting visa regulations.
A senior immigration official was quoted as saying that the clerics had no right to preach in mosques because they had arrived on tourist visas.

He also said that some local Muslims had complained that the visitors were not teaching a moderate form of Islam.

The preachers - from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, the Maldives and Arab nations - must now leave by 31 January.

'Laughable idea'

"They have violated immigration laws. A tourist visa is to have a holiday or visit friends and family, and not to preach Islam," Sri Lanka's immigration head Chulananda Perera told the AFP news agency.

Mr Perera said the group belonged to Tablighi Jamaat - an international Islamic movement popular in Sri Lanka and the region.

A Muslim source told the BBC that the movement sends groups of preachers to places of worship, urging Muslims to devote more time to their faith and act more devoutly.

Any idea that they were militant was laughable, the source added....

Of course! But who exactly is laughing?

Sri Lanka: Daughter killed in "a Muslim extremist style killing" for dating someone from another religion

Dec 25, Colombo: A Muslim extremist style killing has been reported from Sammanthurai of Ampara district of Sri Lanka's Eastern Province, police say.

According to the police, a Muslim father has allegedly beaten his underage daughter to death yesterday evening.

The 17-year-old daughter was killed by father allegedly for having a relationship with a person belonged to another religion.

The suspect has been arrested by police.

Samanthurai Police have commenced further investigations into the incident.

Malaysia's Dear Leader: Demonstrations "not part of our culture"

KUALA LUMPUR: Street demonstrations must not be made a part of the Malaysian culture, the Prime Minister said.

The people should not have to live in chaos and uncertainty, [Malaysian Prime Minister Najib] said.

“We are peace-loving citizens and we want to live in a nation that has a bright future,” the Umno president added when addressing thousands of people comprising party grassroots leaders and representatives from Malay-based [Muslim-based] non-governmental organisations yesterday.

Street protests not part of the Malaysian culture, you say? Well then, what is part of Malay, I mean Malaysian culture, Dear Leader Najib? Threats of naked (Muslim) violence against any dissent? Islamic supremacism and intimidation of any and all kufr within Malaysia's borders?

And lest we think that street protests are not "part of Malaysian culture", let us not forget these instances. First, a street protest in 2008 in favor of the Sri Lankan terrorist group LTTE was staged in Kuala Lumpur by Najib's own party in front of the Sri Lankan embassy. Over one thousand attended the event, including women and children. Other protests have been staged by pro-Government groups over the years, including ones in favor of government laws like the Internal Security Act (ISA), and demonstrations by various Muslim supremacist groups against Israel, against cartoons, in favor of Hamas, et al. All were permitted by the police and/or endorsed by UMNO (i.e. the Government). I suppose having street marches that support 'laudible goals' like the Tamil Tigers, Islamic supremacism and the indefinite suspension of civil rights like ISA is less objectionable than the clean and fair elections that Bersih 2.0 had in mind.

So, are demonstrations really "not part of our culture"? It depends on who's doing the demonstrating and what their message is.

Sri Lanka: Muslim leaders exonerate teenage girls accused of watching pornography (after they were beaten)

Muslim morality gangs like the one that beat up these girls are increasingly active in various countries, and are willing and even eager to brutalize people on the basis of rumor alone. Numerous Christians in Pakistan have fallen victim to the same phenomenon: accused of "blasphemy" on spurious grounds and beaten or even killed without anything approaching a fair hearing.

Mosques in the eastern Sri Lankan town of Kattankudi have made public announcements exonerating two teenage girls accused of watching pornography.
The loudspeaker announcements were made following a court order.

A group of men allegedly beat up the 17-year-olds last week after they came out of an internet cafe in Kattankudi, a mostly Muslim town.

The father of one of the girls says they were accused of watching pornography - a charge the girls deny.

Mohammad Yusuf Abdul Razak told the BBC that the issue had been blown out of proportion because of an earlier announcement made from mosque loudspeakers that that two girls had been viewing pornography.

Mr Razak said that a group of men forcefully took his daughter and the other girl to a local house and beat them up, before taking them to a local Islamic office.

"After that, an announcement was made from a mosque using loudspeakers that two girls were caught doing wrongful things," Mr Razak said.

After hearing this announcement, Mr Razak says, a large crowd gathered and started to denounce the girls.

Police finally intervened and the girls were taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries, he said.

Local Muslims deny making announcements regarding the girls from a mosque. But they agreed on Wednesday to comply with court orders to broadcast the exonerations.

"Today we made announcement from about eight or nine mosques covering the whole area of the Kattankudi town," said Mosque Federation Chairman Mohammad Ibrahim.

"The crux of the message is the girls have not been found guilty of any wrongdoing and are innocent. Local people should help those girls and their family to live in peace."

Police are yet to trace the main accused. But Mr Razak said that he was happy with the retraction.

"I want to thank the judge for restoring our honour," he said.

Indeed. It's a better way to go about doing that than, say, honor killing.
