Mowlam: “terrorist luvvie” (BBC)
At least there’s an outcry against the “terrorist luvvie.” But her view is gaining in respectability nevertheless. From the Belfast Telegraph, :
ULSTER politicians hit out at Mo Mowlam today after she called on the British and American governments to negotiate with Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida.
The former Northern Ireland Secretary said that by carrying out military campaigns in the Middle East, Britain and the US were acting as a “recruitment officer for the terrorists”.
In a TV interview which will be shown on Sunday, she described the current approach as “completely counter-productive”.
DrMowlam told Tyne Tees TV’s Sunday Interview that Britain and America must open a dialogue with their enemies.
Interviewer Tony Cartledge asked if she could imagine “al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden arriving at the negotiating table”.
She replied: “You have to do that. If you do not you condemn large parts of the world to war for ever.”
The Alliance Party described the comments as “totally inappropriate” and the DUP’s Sammy Wilson said the comments were “typical of the remarks that you would expect from a terrorist luvvie”.
