Bangkok, Thailand, Dec. 9 (UPI) — Three simultaneous bomb explosions on railway tracks in southern Thailand disrupted train services Thursday, but caused no casualties, railway officials said.
The head of the State Railways of Thailand, Chitsanti Dhanasobhon, said four bombs had been planted on tracks in the provinces of Yala, Pattani and Songkhla in the country’s mainly Muslim south, which has seen a growing insurgency in recent months. Only minor damage was caused by the blasts.
“The bombs were clearly targeted against passenger trains but luckily the railway inspection units got them first,” Chitsanti said, Channel NewsAsia reported….
The bombs exploded simultaneously at about 6:15 a.m. local time, as railway inspectors were passing on their daily rounds. In Songkhla and Pattani provinces railway protection units exchanged gunfire with suspected Muslim insurgents, the report said. In Yala the bomb exploded after inspectors had passed the site.
