Lately a Muslim has been writing me, angry because “the site is about only one meaning of Jihad.”
Well, of course. There is only one meaning of jihad that leads Muslims to wage war against unbelievers. It is no concern of mine if a Muslim devotes himself to greater efforts to pray or resist sin. But it is most definitely a concern of mine, and of everyone who believes in universal human rights, if a Muslim takes up arms to impose Sharia upon an unwilling populace, and is willing to do violence to that end.
Unfortunately, that is the “highest” form of jihad, according to the “moderate” Muslim site Islamicity.com (thanks to Cosmo for the link):
Q308 :Jihad: Basic definition of

A308 : Jihad could be a simple action, such as standing firm in defense of the cause of Islam. This may require speaking out in public, against ignoring Islamic principles, and writing articles or publishing books. It may also take the form of reminding people of their Islamic duties and motivating them to conduct their lives according to Islam. Its top and most noble form is to fight the enemies of Islam in battle in order to foil their attempts to smother the call of Islam.
In other words, anything perceived as standing in the way of the “call of Islam” gives Muslims an excuse, and indeed a requirement, to take up arms.
