PATTANI, Thailand : Thousands of troops and police have been deployed in Thailand’s three southernmost provinces in case of violence on the January 04 first anniversary of a Muslim separatist revolt.
“We deployed thousands of security officers,” General Sirichai Tanyasiri, head of the Southern Border Provinces Peace Building Command, told AFP.
Defence Minister General Sampan Boonyanun said the government had ordered troops and police onto full alert. He told AFP he expects that near-daily incidents of arson or attacks on personnel will continue for a while.
“Those types of guerrilla attacks against teachers, police officers and monks on the road were very worrying for us,” he said.
Security officials have said Islamic militants in the south of the mainly Buddhist nation are planning major attacks in the southern provinces and the capital Bangkok around January 4.
