AMSTERDAM – Amsterdam thinks it can repel extremism by stimulating books and websites propagating a moderate vision of Islam. The initiative has been added to the action plan ‘We Amsterdammers’, which the council drew up after the murder of Islam critic Theo van Gogh by a radical Muslim.
Amsterdam intends to stimulate the translation and publication in Dutch of Islamic works with a moderate signature. It will also facilitate websites that “bring a clear alternative message to counterbalance websites that propagate intolerance in the city”. The council also plans to invite prominent influencers of opinion to put forward moderate views at symposia and during debates…
“Banning books such as ‘De weg van de Moslim’ (The Way of the Muslim) contravenes the freedom to express opinions, and would in addition be counterproductive,” the city council believes. The Way of the Muslim advises throwing homosexuals head first from a tall building.
