The decision on whether an independent Muslim school should move into the state sector was made behind closed doors last night.
The Schools Organisation Committee retired to private chambers to decide the fate of Nottingham’s Islamia independent school after nearly two hours of discussions.
An announcement is expected soon.
The school wants to become the fourth state-funded Muslim primary in the country.
Principal Dr Musharraf Hussain and Akram Khan-Cheema OBE, representing the school, gave rousing speeches explaining why the 86-pupil primary in Hyson Green should move as a voluntary aided school into the state sector – and share in millions of pounds from the public purse.
Mr Khan-Cheema said: “We no longer want to go with a begging bowl to the LEA. We are part of this wonderful city and we want to live together in mutual harmony.”…
