Security sources Saturday said an armed group slaughtered three soldiers and killed a civilian in an ambush in eastern Algeria.
About 50 gunmen dressed in military fatigues Wednesday night stopped a number of cars at a bogus checkpoint they set up on a road 62 miles east of the capital.
Officials in Algiers said the insurgents searched the passengers and saw their identification cards. When they discovered three soldiers dressed in civilian clothes, they slashed their throats.
The civilian driver of the car was shot and killed when he tried to escape.
Before fleeing, the gunmen destroyed a truckload of alcoholic beverages and stole money and cellular phones from some of the people they stopped.
