Indonesian police say they have arrested 17 militants planning to bomb the national police headquarters in Jakarta and have linked some of them to last year’s blast outside the Australian embassy.
National police spokesman Aryanto Boedihardjo says 11 of the men were
arrested last week near the city of Solo in Central Java province.The rest were arrested in Jakarta.
“They are suspected of carrying out terror acts by planning to bomb the headquarters of the police in Jakarta,” Mr Boedihardjo said.
He says some of the suspects are also thought to have provided the detonator for the suicide truck bomb outside the Australian embassy in Jakarta.
That blast killed 10 people on September 9, 2004.
Police say the Al Qaeda-linked regional militant network Jemaah Islamiah (JI) carried out the embassy bombing, as well as the October 2002 blasts on the holiday island of Bali that killed 202 people and the 2003 suicide car bombing of the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta in which 12 died…
