A typically sophisticated comment from Salman Rushdie, but give him credit for anti-dhimmitude. After all, he has already rung the bell on the Islamic rage meter. “Britain: Salman Rushdie Says ‘Veils Suck,'” from AKI, with thanks to Sr. Soph:
London, 10 Oct. (AKI) – Indian-born Muslim author Salman Rushdie on Tuesday weighed into a recent controversy over the veil in Britain, saying in his view “veils suck.” In an interview with the popular BBC Radio 4’s Today programme , Rushied stated: “I think the battle against the veil has been a long and continuing battle against the limitation of women, so in that sense I’m completely on [Straw’s] side.” He was referring to House of Commons leader Jack Straw’s revelation last week that he asked Muslim women visiting his constituency surgery to remove their veils as he believed this was helpful to race relations and Muslim integration – comments that sparked anger from many Muslims.
“He was expressing an important opinion, which is that veils suck, which they do. I think the veil is a way of taking power away from women,” said Rushdie. “Speaking as somebody with three sisters and a very largely female Muslim family, there’s not a single woman I know in my family or in their friends who would have accepted wearing the veil,” he added.
