GAZA CITY – Clashes between rival Palestinian factions continued through the night and into the morning Saturday, leaving eight people wounded and shattering an infant ceasefire, doctors and witnesses said.
Fighting between the ruling Islamist Hamas and the Fatah faction loyal to president Mahmud Abbas raged across Gaza City with some of the fiercest fighting occurring near the headquarters of the Fatah-dominated security services, where five people were wounded, medical sources said….
On Friday, Abbas, the chief of Fatah, and Hamas” exiled leader Khaled Meshaal in Damascus, agreed to a ceasefire after 25 people died in 24 hours of clashes.
That accord has become the latest in a long series of truces in recent weeks to fall apart soon after they were agreed.
The two leaders have agreed to meet in the Muslim holy city of Mecca next Tuesday on the initiative of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia.
