A few days ago, Jihad Watch went down for a few hours, and in between emails to the tech people I worked on the Blogging the Qur’an segment posted this morning. In this course of doing so, I made an interesting discovery, and sent this note to Pamela — which is expanded below now.
The USC-MSA “Compendium of Muslim Texts” — a helpful online collection that I’ve used for years to demonstrate that, contrary to the common charge, I do not misquote or misrepresent the Qur’an or Hadith — has been renamed the “Center for Muslim-Jewish Engagement.”
Most of the texts are still there, along with a new link to the Talmud. Conspicuously absent is Syed Abul Ala Maududi’s introductions to every Qur’an chapter, which had been a feature of the old site. Maududi, of course, was a Pakistani jihad theorist whose writings remain enormously influential among Muslims today.
Why might Maududi have been deep-sixed by the suddenly ecumenical-minded Muslims of the USC Muslim Students Association? Perhaps it is because of small matters such as his commentary on Qur’an 9:29, in which he states that unbelievers have “absolutely no right to seize the reins of power in any part of God’s earth nor to direct the collective affairs of human beings according to their own misconceived doctrines. For if they are given such an opportunity, corruption and mischief will ensue. In such a situation the believers would be under an obligation to do their utmost to dislodge them from political power and to make them live in subservience to the Islamic way of life” (Towards Understanding the Qur’an, vol. III, p. 202).
Maududi’s introductions to each sura of the Qur’an, although they themselves contain nothing as incendiary as the quote above, have been replaced by a link to the Qur’an commentary by Muhammad Asad (Leopold Weiss), a 20th-century convert to Islam from Judaism whose commentary on the Qur’an is severely whitewashed for Western consumption. Hugh writes about him here.
The MSA has also made the collection harder to use, and less helpful. In the old system, which is still accessible from my bookmark to it, although I doubt that will last long, turns up these matches in the hadith for the search “Jew and come and kill”:
The query [Jew and come and kill] generated the following matches:
Complete Sahih Bukhari
Complete Sahih Muslim
Partial Sunan Abu Dawud
None.
Complete Malik’s Muwatta
None.
Here, just for the record, is a screenshot I just took:
But if you go into the new system and make exactly the same search, this is what you get:

Note that all of the references are from Malik’s Muwatta. None of them take you to the references above to the genocidal hadith in Bukhari and Muslim, in which Muhammad says that the end of days will come when Muslims kill Jews, and Jews hide behind stones and trees, which then cry out, “O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him!”
But those ahadith won’t show up in searches because they have been removed, haven’t they, after the David Horowitz Freedom Center called attention to them — right? Wrong. In the first place, the MSA only removed the ones from Muslim, not the ones from Bukhari, but anyway the ones they removed are now back. You can apparently no longer link to them directly — another interesting change — but you can see them by going here and scrolling down to numbers 6981 through 6985:
Book 041, Number 6981:
Ibn ‘Umar reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: You will fight against the Jews and you will kill them until even a stone would say: Come here, Muslim, there is a Jew (hiding himself behind me) ; kill him.
Book 041, Number 6982:
Ubaidullah has reported this hadith with this chain of transmitters (and the Words are):” There is a Jew behind me.”
Book 041, Number 6983:
Abdullah b. ‘Umar reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: You and the Jews would fight against one another until a stone would say: Muslim, here is a Jew behind me; come and kill him.
Book 041, Number 6984:
Abdullah b. ‘Umar reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: The Jews will fight against you and you will gain victory over them until the stone would say: Muslim, here is a Jew behind me; kill him.
Book 041, Number 6985:
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him; but the tree Gharqad would not say, for it is the tree of the Jews.
Why all the changes, making this resource so much harder to use, and obviously covering up uncomfortable material so that the unwitting will not discover its existence? The Jews who are participating in this “Center for Muslim-Jewish Engagement” project should be forewarned: reform is not deception, and deception is not reform. The USC MSA has not repudiated the genocidal ahadith. It has just hidden them — and it has done so after removing some of them for a time, under pressure from university authorities. The implications should be obvious.
