ZAMBOANGA (AFP)–Muslim separatist rebels bombed a major electricity transmission tower in the southern Philippines before dawn Saturday, cutting off power to several towns, the military said.
Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels planted four explosive devices made from mortar bombs rigged to a timing device on the National Transmission Corp. tower in the town of Kauswagan on Mindanao island.
Three of the bombs exploded, while the fourth failed and was later recovered by the military, said military spokesman Lieutenant Stefanni Cacho….
MILF rebels were blamed for a series of bomb and grenade attacks during the Christmas and New Year holidays that left more than 40 wounded, and for the burning of over 30 homes in another Mindanao town this week.
