But if a father believes he is cleansing the honor of his Muslim family, then all bets are off.
Tulay Goren Update. “Sister screams in anguish as she gives evidence against father accused of daughter’s ‘honour killing,'” by Lucy Ballinger for the Daily Mail, November 3 (thanks to all who sent this in):
The sister of an alleged honour killing victim let out a long piercing howl of anguish at their father as she faced him across a courtroom today.
Tulay Goren, 15, went missing in 1999 after falling in love with an older man her parents did not approve of. Her body has never been found.
Her father Mehmet Goren, 45, was the last person to see his daughter alive and is accused of her murder.
As she gave evidence against him at the Old Bailey his eldest daughter Nuray Guler, 28, broke off in the middle of a sentence to scream at her father in Turkish.
Leaning over the edge of the witness box she stretched her hands out in front of her and shook her fists while she screamed a frantic torrent of words at Mehmet, who sat impassively in the dock.
Mrs Guler let out a long blood-curdling scream before collapsing in the dock, and put her head in her hands sobbing.
While the translator standing next to her tried to calm her down trial Judge Mr Justice Bean asked for her to be removed from court and ordered that what she had said should not be translated.
Before screaming she said: ‘I didn’t think that this could be possible, I still can’t think that it is possible because a father could not do such a thing.’
She then started to add: ‘I never believed not even…’ before she started to shout, and then turned to scream at her father in the dock in Turkish.
After a brief adjournment, she again turned to face Mehmet from the witness box and tearfully addressed him again in Turkish, but was told to stop by the judge.
The outburst came after she claimed her father had threatened to kill her the night before she disappeared. She said Mehmet was enraged to discover Tulay trying to escape from the family home by climbing out of an upstairs toilet window.
Mrs Guler told how he made life ‘hell’ and he had called Tulay a ‘whore’ because of her relationship with an older man.
Giving evidence against her father at the Old Bailey without a screen Mrs Guler wiped away tears as she told of the last time she saw her sister alive on 6 January 1999.
Mrs Guler said her sibling had started dating an older man because she wanted to get out of her unhappy home.
She said: ‘She was brought up in a house environment which was restless and unhappy and she was very young and she was vulnerable. She was a child looking for happiness outside. Maybe what she was looking for was a father. Maybe she found a love she didn’t get from her father in that man.’
She said members of the extended family were called by her father to try and persuade Tulay to stop seeing her boyfriend Halil Unal, whom she had been living with.
‘When this matter was discussed she would get nervous and upset,’ said Mrs Guler.
‘At some time she was about to jump off the toilet window but she was prevented. My father was very upset and he got cross with her and he was saying that he was going to kill her.’…
