This may be part of Hamas’ fitful attempts to portray itself as moderate. Hamas is on the brink of respectability now, and with another push toward moderation, however spurious, could become the darling of Obama and the UN.
“Report: Salafists say Hamas detained leader in Gaza,” from Ma’an News Agency, March 6:
TEL AVIV (Ma’an) — The Israeli daily news site Yedioth Ahronoth reported Sunday the anger of Gaza-based Salafi group At-Tawheed and Holy Jihad, after they reported the arrest of a senior leader by Hamas officials in Gaza last week.
Abu Al-Walid Al-Mqdesi was detained at the end of February, the site said, and added that Hamas leader Salah Al-Bardawil confirmed the report.
In August 2009, a different group of Salafists staged a battle in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, taking over a mosque and declaring an Islamic caliphate in the city.
Twenty-two were killed in the ensuing battle with Hamas forces, which re-took the area.
