Jihad Watch reader D.T. kindly sends in the above statement from the Borders bookstore chain in Malaysia, responding to the arrest of one of its managers for selling a book by Muslim reformist and purveyor of her own private Islam Irshad Manji.
The statement is as supine as one might expect, protesting that “there was no way for Borders to know that JAWI [Federal Territory Islamic Department] considered the books to be objectionable.” Presumably, then, if it had known, it wouldn’t have sold them, and free speech be damned. No stand on principle. No defense of free thought. Just weaselly protestations.
This is nothing surprising coming from a bookstore chain that, when Karen Armstrong and I both had biographies of Muhammad out at the same time, placed hers in the “Islam” section and mine in “Medieval History” — making hers easy to find and mine next to impossible. Borders also has a company policy that Qur’ans must always be placed on the top shelf.
Cowards, fools, Useful Idiots, and dhimmis.
