Pompeo (R-Kansas) says that the silence of Muslim leaders on jihad terrorism has been deafening. Actually, however, they have issued vague and pro-forma condemnations of terrorism. What they have not done is take any effective or serious action against the spread of jihadist and Islamic supremacist beliefs in the Muslim community. He also says that Muslims must teach that it is wrong to kill innocents — he is apparently unaware of the Muslim scholars who maintain that no non-Muslim can ever be innocent. Nor does he appear to be aware of the details of Muhammad’s career according to Islamic tradition: the massacres of the Jewish Qurayza tribe and of poets who offended him, the exhortations to wage war against non-Muslims, the expedition to make an unprovoked attack on the Christians of Tabuk, the declaration “I have been made victorious through terror,” the statement “I have been commanded to fight against people until they confess that there is no god but Allah and I am his messenger,” etc. etc. etc. Pompeo is one of a long, long line of politicians who assumes in the teeth of reality that the core texts of Islam teach peace, and that jihad terrorists are transgressing against the clear meaning of those texts as much as Fred Phelps is against the teachings of Christianity. I would give it 100 to 1 odds that Pompeo has read neither the Qur’an nor the life of Muhammad.
