What’s the big deal? Christian activists threaten to blow up embassies all the time, don’t they?
“Bangladesh’s Islamist activist arrested over Egyptian embassy blow-up threat,” from Xinhua, August 21:
DHAKA, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) — An activist of the student wing of Bangladesh’s largest Islamist party was arrested Wednesday morning on charge of threatening to blow up the Egyptian embassy in Dhaka.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Shawkat Ali in central Dhaka.
Deputy Commissioner of the DMP Masudur Rahman told Xinhua that “the detained youth informed police at the primary interrogation that he is involved in the politics of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami party.”
“It was not immediately known whether the threat was issued on behalf of the youth himself or of an organized group,” he said.
According to police, the Egypt embassy in Dhaka Tuesday received a mobile sms that demanded an end to “crackdown on the members of Muslim Brotherhood Movement in Egypt”. It also threatened to blow up the embassy.
Citing security concerns, however, the authorities decided to shut the consular section of the Egyptian embassy for 11 days from Wednesday.
A spokesman of Shibir or Jamaat was not available for comment.
Shibir men Tuesday brought out a protest procession in Dhaka, calling for stopping “crackdown on Muslim Brotherhood members in Egypt.”
Jamaat leader Monjurul Islam Bhuiyan in a statement Tuesday said that the Egyptian army has ousted the first-ever elected President Mohammad Morsi unlawfully and got involved in the worst ever mass killing in the human history.
The brutal killing has made the world stunned and shocked, Bhuiyan said in the statement posted in the party’s website.
He urged the Egyptian authority to reinstate Morsi, saying that otherwise the situation in the entire Middle East will be further deteriorated….
In other words, reinstate Morsi, or else.
