The hopeless Gottlieb
How far gone is Insane Britannia? This far gone. Can you imagine a barrister sobbing as he defended a Nazi who killed a British soldier in 1940?
“Adebolajo: Killer Is A Good Man, Says Sobbing Barrister,” from Court News UK, December 18 (thanks to Benedict):
One of Lee Rigby’s killers is ‘honest, upright and honourable’, an Old Bailey jury heard today (weds).
Michael Adebolajo, 28, and his friend Michael Adebowale, 22, hacked the 25 year-old soldier to death after running him over near Woolwich Barracks in south London.
Jurors have heard Adebolajo attempted to decapitate him with a meat cleaver before dragging his mutilated body in front of members of the public.
David Gottlieb, defending Adebolajo, emotionally told the jury: ‘Here is a man who killed a British soldier.’
‘He is a British citizen and he has shown himself to be honest, upright and honourable.
His voice cracked and he appeared to sob as he added: ‘He is someone who is totally sincere, a man of absolute honesty and moral conviction.’
‘The description of callous, barbaric, mutilating a body do not fit my client, it’s not consistent with being a murderer.’Mr Gottlieb told jurors they must not let emotion affect their decision.
‘Why should you acquit him, he is someone who killed Lee Rigby and has said he would kill again,’ he added.
He said the prosecution case is ‘absolutely overwhelming’.
‘In his mind he was obeying the command of Allah,’ Mr Gottlieb told jurors.
‘Of course that’s not a defence in law.
‘All the prosecution proved is that he was saying he honestly believed he was following the will of God, that’s what they proved – is that enough?’
The attack on father-of-one Mr Rigby, a soldier in the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment, from Middleton, Rochdale, Lancs, took place in Artillery Place in Woolwich shortly after 2pm on May 22.
Both men were shot as they charged armed police at the scene.
Adebowale, also known as Ismail Ibn Abdullah, of [Flat 21] Macey House, Thames Street, Greenwich, and Adebolajo, also known as Mujaahid Abu Hamza, of [Flat 23] Greenwich House, Oakwood Close, Lewisham, both deny murder, conspiracy to murder, and attempted murder of police officers who arrived at the scene.
