UPDATE: It turns out that Israel is listed on the World Chess Federation’s Europe page. By what calculus they determined that Israel is in Europe but “Palestine” is in Asia is unclear. In any case, if Israel is a recognized member of the World Chess Federation, why is it allowing the Israeli team to be listed as from the country of “FIDE” for the World Youth Chess Championships?

The World Youth Chess Championships are being held in the United Arab Emirates this year; earlier this morning I broke the story that the Israeli team is listed as from the country of FIDE (World Chess Federation), with no mention of Israel at all. This seems to be a larger policy — not just one related to the location of the tournament. For at the World Chess Federation website, not only is Israel not listed in the directory, but if you scroll over the map, Israel doesn’t appear at all, but “Palestine” does:
Why the Israeli team competes under these humiliating circumstances, I do not know. (Thanks to David.)
