Think of it as a parable.
The Pope recently wrote that “authentic Islam and the proper reading of the Koran are opposed to every form of violence.” I discussed that statement at some length here. It was on Francis’ part a kind of dove of peace, an invitation to Muslims of good will to see the Qur’an and Islam as eschewing all violence. That is certainly a laudable intention, but I am afraid that in that case as well as in the incident pictured above, the Pope’s doves of peace will be set upon by predatory birds: the Muslims who believe that authentic Islam and the proper reading of the Qur’an mandate violence against unbelievers, and who are expressing that belief by persecuting Christians and other non-Muslims in Egypt, Syria, Nigeria, the Central African Republic, Thailand, and elsewhere.
