Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Brunei sultan threatens to prosecute critics of his plan to impose Sharia

Feb 26, 2014 10:21 am By Robert Spencer

HassanalBolkiah_1473459cThis is no surprise. Criticism of Sharia is a crime according to…Sharia. Islamic law makes for a brittle and thin-skinned culture that responds violently to any suggestion that its stonings, amputations, death penalty for those who leave Islam, and institutionalized oppression of women and non-Muslims might not constitute perfect justice. In the West, this coalesces perfectly with the Left’s increasing thirst for authoritarianism and quest to shut down its foes rather than engage then. That’s one of the reasons why Leftists and Islamic supremacists have such a happy alliance.

“Brunei sultan hits back at rare criticism over sharia,” from AFP, February 26:

Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei) (AFP) – Brunei’s all-powerful sultan, stung by rare criticism, has ordered social media users to stop attacking his plans to introduce harsh Islamic criminal punishments in the placid oil-rich kingdom.

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah — one of the world’s wealthiest men — announced last October that Brunei would phase in sharia law punishments such as flogging, severing limbs and death by stoning beginning April 1.

The move has sparked a growing outcry on social media, the only outlet for public criticism of authorities in the Muslim country where questioning the 67-year-old sultan is taboo.

In a weekend speech, the sultan issued a clear threat to the critics.

“They cannot be allowed to continue committing these insults, but if there are elements which allow them to be brought to court, then the first phase of implementing the Syariah Penal Code Order in April will be very relevant to them,” he said, according to a copy of his speech published by state media.

He did not specify how social media users could be prosecuted under Islamic law.

The sultan remains a revered figure in the tiny realm of 400,000 — which enjoys some of the highest living standards in Asia — and his word is unquestioned.

But in recent weeks a heated online debate has erupted in the easy-going country between sharia’s supporters and those fearful of it.

“It is truly frightening to think that we might potentially be stoned to death for being lovers, that we may be fined for being of a different sexual orientation, and that what we wear will be regulated,” one recent posting said.

Brunei has some of Asia’s highest rates of Internet penetration and social media use.

Sharia punishments can include stoning to death for adultery, severing of limbs for theft, and flogging for violations ranging from abortion to alcohol consumption to homosexuality.

The country already practices a more conservative form of Islam compared to its Muslim neighbours Malaysia and Indonesia, banning the sale and public consumption of alcohol and closely restricting other religions.

Its dual-track legal system combines civil courts with sharia courts that have typically handled mainly marital, inheritance and other low-key issues.

But Hassanal has increasingly advocated strengthening Islam in the face of potentially harmful outside influences, including the Internet, and has warned of rising crime.

In his speech, he called his Islamic monarchy a “firewall” against globalisation.

Officials have previously said sharia cases would require an extremely high burden of proof and judges would have wide discretion applying it.

Overseas human right groups have denounced the move.

The sultan’s wealth — estimated at $20 billion by Forbes magazine in 2011 — has become legendary with reports of a vast collection of luxury vehicles and gold-bedecked palaces.

The monarchy was deeply embarrassed by a sensational family feud between the sultan and his younger brother Jefri who allegedly embezzled $15 billion in the 1990s.

Court battles and exposes revealed salacious details of Jefri’s un-Islamic jet-set lifestyle, including allegations of a high-priced harem of Western paramours and a luxury yacht he owned called “Tits”.

It’s un-Islamic to have a harem? What? No “captives of the right hand” (Qur’an 4:3) allowed for Jefri?

Sharia law is the nefarious Satanic apartheid works righteous theology of Islam. It is evil codified. There is no grace in Islam because Allah is not God and cannot legally forgive sin. Muslims are trapped in an endless demand to do this or that, without hope nor certainty of salvation from their sins.
Women are treated in sharia courts as mere chattels.

Ah. You must be a loonwatch afficianado, or a leftard, or simply a poor deluded fool, and a victim of PC/MC ‘education’, where you were never taught to weigh evidence and think for yourself.

If the latter, you have my pity, but also my contempt, because it **is** actually possible to throw off the rubbish you’ve been taught, and learn to think for yourself. All it takes is a bit of common sense and integrity.

All of the stories posted here by Mr Spencer come from legitimate news sources. There are no lies posted here, about what mohammedans are doing every day, somewhere in the world, in the name of islam/koran/mohammed.

Think about that, if you can, and try to figure out why it is so.

With Muslims, for our own safety, we must always assume the worst. There are other ways to explain the ostensible phenomenon of Muslims opposing a dictator who is imposing harsher implementation of Sharia. We must prejudicially assume it is for reasons that have nothing to do with Muslims really evolving away from Islam. We must do this for our own safety; for to do otherwise is to sow the seeds of policies that could get us killed by inculcating trust in Muslims.

Why do I say this? To ask me such a question would be like a person standing on the pleasantly snowy peak of a mountain taller than Everest and ask, “What mountain?” I say this because of this veritable mountain of data we sit on right now, Mt. Jihad Watch, a volcanic mountain growing every day with the metastatic eruptions of the evil lava of Islamic data from all over the world as the tectonic shift of a global Revival of Islam occurs under our feet and all around us, changing the landscape of our world.

“With Muslims, for our own safety, we must always assume the worst. ”

I fully agree with you on this point. Love doesn’t necessarily mean Trust. I love my fellow human beings regardless of their affiliations, but in the same time, I need to be wise, protect myself, my family and my country from this evil ideology – Islam –

        • Defcon 4 says

          Feb 26, 2014 at 12:10 pm

The ideology of islam wouldn’t be problematic, if there weren’t muzzies enforcing it, all over the world today. It’s not ISLAM that’s the problem, it’s the followers of islam. islam doesn’t kill, enslave and persecute people MUSLIMS do.

        • voegelinian says

          Feb 26, 2014 at 3:12 pm

If that’s your position, that you agree that our need to be wary of Muslims supersedes our humanitarian and/or Christian love for them, then why insist on the latter so much?

There is a related problem with your optimism: Just as an undue bias toward humanitarian Wilsonianism (whether secular or Christian) can lead to policies that get us killed (as they have for over a decade already), so to could policies based upon the expectation that Muslims will apostasize en masse around the world, bringing down their Wall of Islam just as the millions of victims of Communism did in the 80s. An expectation like that is fine to hope for — but it could easily lead to policies that can get us killed in sigificantly larger numbers than were we to remain steely jaded pessimists. If you or any optimist like you were to similarly agree with this second point, the same question applies: Why repeatedly insist on this rosy hope, if we do not want to be formulating policies based upon it?

        • voegelinian says

          Feb 26, 2014 at 3:17 pm

I agree with Defcon here. Muslims actualize Islam. If Muslims were not actualizing Islam, Islam would not be a problem at all. It would simply be a curious, bizarre, repellant, quaint ideology based on dusty old texts nobody is putting into practice. This notion that “we oppose Islam, not Muslims” is straight out of the PC MC playbook that is getting us killed. And didn’t Spencer recently wryly remark upon a news story that referred to a terror attack as though the explosions just happened by themselves, with no agents or actors causing them? Well, that is precisely Salah’s position — and, unfortunately, he is not alone in the Counter-Jihad on this.

Then, when somebody goes on to insist they are tough and no-nonsense about the problem of Islam, but they also continue to purvey this artificial distinction between Islam and Muslims, they go further and become incoherent. Unfortunately, many in the Counter-Jihad, including lofty Luminaries, seem to indulge in this as well.

          @voegelinian

We must be wise and implement all kinds of policies to protect our freedoms. The problem is that none of these policies has a long term effect. Immigration policies? we don’t live in a bubble, sooner or later we’ll need to fill the void caused by our abortion/homosexual culture. Deportation? It’s legally almost impossible. Besides, how would you deal with Muslims born in the U.S. or E.U.? Such policies are doomed to fail in the long run.
We need to deal with the heart of the problem: Islam (not Muslims). Islam is extremely vulnerable, a giant made of paper. All we need to do is get rid of our political correctness.
Imagine a strong leader brave enough to declare an open war on Islam! Imagine facts about Jihad and Islam (as in here on JW) on every TV channel, non-stop information about this pseudo-religion on all MSM!
Unlike the last 14 centuries, today we have the power of the internet, we need to educate Muslims around the world through this tool.
Unlike the last 14 centuries, today we have a strong military powerful enough to protect apostates. Through economic sanctions we can protect them even in their homeland. That’s the way to have the masses on our side. That’s the long term solution I’m talking about. This way not only are we going to protect ourselves, our children and grandchildren, but we will be helping millions of decent Muslims break the chains of this evil ideology. What’s stopping us? Political Correctness from the part of our politicians and cowardice/indifference from our part.

I’m sorry—the idea that any Western nation *needs to* import Mohammedans is just ridiculous.

For one thing, population is not a zero-sum game—importing Muslims who are both dangerous and apt to live on the dole is not necessary or desirable. It winds up *costing* the host population, in paying for welfare and added security.

I agree that it would be *far preferable* if Western nations had a higher birth rate—but even if they do not your implication that they must then import people who are hostile to their values and want to murder then is absurd.

The United States has long been described as a “nation of immigrants”, and most of these immigrants admire and practice our values and want to become American. We don’t have to import enemies, and neither does any other Western nation.

          More:

…we need to educate Muslims around the world…we will be helping millions of decent Muslims break the chains of this evil ideology…
          ………………………….

I would certainly be supportive of some sort of “Radio Free Dar-al-Islam” (like Radio Free Europe, which gave those stuck behind the Iron Curtain under Communism access news from the free world).

But I have to admit that I don’t believe that many Muslims are apt to listen to the “filthy Kuffar” when it comes to their vile creed. Most Muslims know how just ugly their faith is, and like it that way.

After all, I doubt that the richer-than-croesus Sultan of Brunei is imposing Shari’ah because he has never heard of freedom…

      Sharia is a cookbook

Followers of the very once popular 60’s television series ‘The Twilight Zone’
might recall an episode titled “To Serve Man”
To those who are unfamiliar, I will attempt a brief summary.
Alien beings arrive on earth uninvited declaring that they come in peace
and soon begin to convince a skeptical public of their good intentions
with the help of progressive minded culturally enlightened intellectuals.

When one of a staff of US government cryptographers translates their ‘book’
to mean ‘TO SERVE MAN’ everyone is relieved and overjoyed and soon all the (leftists)
pat themselves on the back as if to say “see we told you so”

Later on to everyone’s horror it is discovered that
‘TO SERVE MAN’ is actually a COOKBOOK.

That one, and the one entitled: “The Librarian vs The State”, starring Burgess Meredith as the humble librarian who turns the tables on his statist, collectivist “judge”.

Towards the end of the episode, after the statist thug, in panic, cries: “For the love of God, let me out!”, the librarian shows his love of God when he states: “Yes, minister! For the love of God I WILL let you out.” He does. And although he dies in the blast that was to remove him from that statist, collectivist “Utopia”, he dies triumphant. The minister of “The State”, however, faces a very different end.

Some very good episodes were written for The Twilight Zone.

Mahoundians who don’t want sharia are apostates. Who are they to say sharia are not Allah’s laws? And what about the depraved punishments demanded in Quran? Those are incorporated into sharia, would they reject those? What’s the difference? Sharia is a guide for living and an instruction manual on how to be a pious Mahoundian. Reject that and you reject Islam, and have a lot of explaining to do. Not to me, to Allah.

Indeed it is, increasingly so. The same people who will laugh at you for pointing out the growth of sharia in the West (“Don’t be silly! It will never happen!”) will also, perhaps on another occassion, defend sharia as nothing to worry about, ie quite harmless really, just a few family-related customs codified into laws for Muslims only. There is naturally a disconnect there: but nothing is too disconnected, too illogical (“alogical” might be a better word)for the clever, modern Western mind.
