Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Thailand: Muslims murder Buddhist monk and nine-year-old child in jihad raids

Feb 13, 2014 11:39 am By Robert Spencer

THAILANDIA_-_sud_ribelliIf Buddhists in Thailand start to fight back, we will see a new spate of stories in the mainstream media about how Buddhists are targeting Muslims for “ethnic cleansing.” But there will be little note of this, just as the mainstream media has little noted the jihad in Thailand for years now.

“Islamist raid in southern Thailand: five dead and six wounded,” from Asia News, February 13 (thanks to C. Cantoni):

Bangkok ( AsiaNews / Agencies) – Five people were killed, including a Buddhist monk and a child of nine years of age, and at least six injured in two separate attacks that took place in the south of Thailand. The region has long been the scene of a separatist Islamist insurgency. Police sources report that both attacks were motivated by the violent murder last week of three young Muslim brothers.

Local witnesses report that this morning four armed men on board motorcycles, opened fire against a monk as he was collecting offers. The attack took place in the district of Mae Lan, in the southern province of Pattani. The bullets struck and killed the priest and three other people present at the scene, including a child. The wounded include a law enforcement officer, who was escorting the monk.

In the second incident, yesterday evening in the district of Yaring, again in Pattani, a Buddhist woman of 29 years of age was killed. The woman was on board of her motorbike on her way home when she was hit by a barrage of bullets, after killing her, the assailants set fire to her corpse. They also left a note on the crime scene addressed “to the head of the army”, in which they explain that “this is not the last body to [ avenge ] the three brothers”.

The three Muslim brothers (three, five and nine years of age) from the neighboring province of Narathiwat, were shot last week in front of their home, as they returned from evening prayers at the mosque. Their father and mother (who is pregnant) were also involved in the assault, but survived.

In recent days, the Islamist faction had carried out a first act of retaliation for the death of children: On 10 February, the wife of a policeman was killed and then set on fire, in an episode very similar to what happened last night, in the main market of the town in front of a terrified crowd.

A decade-long separatist struggle by Islamic extremists has engulfed southern Thailand on the border Malaysia, which has so far claimed over 5,900 casualties, most of them civilians. The Islamists want autonomy from Thailand, who annexed the region more than a century ago, and accuse the Thai and Buddhist authorities of human rights violations and of not respecting the local culture. Almost every day there are bombings and shootings; peace talks between the government and rebels are in an impasse, exacerbated by the political clash – between Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and the opposition led by the Democrat Party – which has been crippling the institutional life in Bangkok and throughout Thailand for months.

I’d like to know why Robert considers this “jihad”. Is all sectarian violence perpetrated by Muslims considered jihad? In which case, I’m not sure that it’s a particularly useful concept.

This sounds to me like the another example of the tribal nature at the root of Islamic justice, in which killing any member of the offending person’s tribe is as good as killing the person who committed the offending act. Hey, maybe that made sense to people living in the Arabian Peninsula in the 7th century.

You are absolutely correct. Anything every done by any Muslim anywhere that Robert B. Spencer finds distasteful is classified as “jihad”.

Jihadists in Yemen, Burma*, Thailand and the Taliban all spew out disinformation that their struggle is really about sectarionism, land, independance, what have you. Any excuse they think the west will react positively to and thus hinder our will to confront them.

But when they talk to each and don’t think we’ll hear them they only ever discus motives along the lines of creating theocratic dictatorships. About conquest in the name of Islam. About “establishing the Shariah”.

No matter what they babble to us, whenever they’ve gotten their way, as in that autonomous islamic region in the Philippines, they immediately set subjecting the population to hard line Sharia law, which is fundamentally contrary, both in spirit and in real world application, to the UN’s convention on Human Rights.

They, like Mohamad, knows nobody in their right mind would really accept or support what they really desire, so they make up bullpucky to trick everyone that their motives are somehow more benign – and then once they establish power, steadily tighten the screws on populations who were previously comparitively free.

*The Jihadists in Burma have been trained in Bangladesh and Pakistan, the same country that backs the Taliban and which sends out agents to radicalize mosques in other countries to become jihad oriented.

One of the interesting things about this wave of separatist violence in southern Thailand is the anonymity of its leadership. It is probably made up of elements unpalatable to both Malaysia and Thailand, for Malaysia supported the crackdown on the southern Thailand separatists in 2004, when Taksin Chinawat was PM of Thailand. Gen. Sonthi, who led government forces against the separatists shortly afterwards (himself a Muslim, albeit of a Bangkok-based family of Persian heritage rather than a southern ethnic Malay), suspected former Communists (who had given help to the separatists in the past), although this is disputed by many both in and out of the Thai government.

It is, however, known that some disgruntled elements from southern Thailand have cultivated ties to Qaida, the Aceh separatists, and similar movements. I suspect that the general anonymity of the leaders of this movement may also suggest that it may not have that great a resonance with the local population. Further, given that there is a very large Muslim presence in the Thai transport industry, the near absence of terrorist incidents outside the Patthani-Nariatiwat-Yala area suggests a very localized problem–notwithstanding the viciousness of incidents in the affected area.

Anyone inside Muang Thai who has other insights, or an ear to the ground?

The Muslims who murdered the Buddhist monk, the woman and the child are claiming as pretext the murder of three young Muslims: they are, supposedly, ‘avenging’ that other killing.

From the article – “They also left a note on the crime scene addressed “to the head of the army”, in which they explain that “this is not the last body to [ avenge ] the three brothers”.”

“The three Muslim brothers (three, five and nine years of age) from the neighboring province of Narathiwat, were shot last week in front of their home, as they returned from evening prayers at the mosque. Their father and mother (who is pregnant) were also involved in the assault, but survived.”

Nota bene: there appears to be not a skerrick of evidence that *non-Muslims* – whether the Thai military, or anybody else – carried out this killing. It is far, far more likely that they were killed by *other Muslims* who for one ‘reason’ or another deemed them insufficiently Islamic. If one reads through the “Bangkok Post” defence-and-security section, where all these stories from the jihad-wracked Islam-addled southern provinces are filed, one sees plenty of cases of *Muslims* (often but not always local village chiefs or schoolteachers who are deemed to be ‘collaborating’ with the Thai infidels) being assassinated by the assorted jihad groupuscules. And of course, right now, in many parts of the dar al Islam, we are seeing Muslims killing other Muslims – even *inside* mosques, let alone next to mosques.

Muslims kill Muslims…and then other Muslims kill *non-Muslims*, blaming them for the death of Muslims who were killed by…Muslims.

I am prepared to bet good money that, should the killers of those three young boys outside the mosque be found, they will turn out to be…MUSLIMS.

Have just gone to Bangkok Post.

Checking out two reports discussing the case, it seems pretty damn likely that the “three Muslim boys” whose death is claimed by the jihadis as pretext for killing non-Muslim civilians (including, nota bene, a Buddhist *monk* publicly practising his faith), were killed by **other Muslims**, whether jihadis or assassins carrying out a private revenge raid (since the boys’ father has been accused of killing *a fellow Muslim*).

    http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/394848/murders-in-pattani-draw-condemnation

“He [Col. Banpot] said investigations confirmed the Feb 3 shooting that caused the deaths of three Malay-Muslim brothers – aged 6, 9 and 11 – and left their parents wounded in Narathiwat’s Bacho district was carried. out by insurgents, not by members of the security forces as some alleged..”.

And even before investigations, take a close look at the initial report of the killing of the boys:

    http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/security/393230/gunmen-slay-3-young-boys

“Pol Maj Gen Pattanawut said initial investigations suggest that a personal conflict was the likely motive behind the shooting because Mr Jehmu had shot dead Mayi Duere, an assistant to the village chief in tambon Sai Thong of Pattani’s Mai Kaen district on April 21,2012
Mr Jehmu is currently free on bail, pending a trial.”…

Islam produces, in its adherents, three great ills of the soul – 1/ paranoid suspicion 2/ hair-trigger aggression and 3/ projection/ scapegoating…blaming on Infidels all the horrible things that Muslims routinely do and intend to do to…other Muslims.

    From the article –

“Local witnesses report that this morning four armed men on board motorcycles, opened fire against a monk as he was collecting offers. The attack took place in the district of Mae Lan, in the southern province of Pattani. The bullets struck and killed the priest and three other people present at the scene, including a child. Bangkok Post tells us a bit more about these innocent Buddhist victims of gloating, strutting mohammedan sadism and will-to-dominate-and-kill.

Here’s a detailed account of the assassination of an unarmed Buddhist monk (who is, at bottom, a target of Jihad simply qua Buddhist):

“On Thursday morning, a Buddhist monk and three civilians were shot dead and a policeman and five other civilians wounded in a drive-by shooting in Pattani’s Mae Lan district

“A team of policemen was escorting monks collecting alms along the road {nota bene – why is it that policemen must guard unarmed monks? – answer: this is an area where there are enough Muslims, that it can be taken for granted that *some* of them will Go Jihad, murderously – dda} when gunmen riding pillion on two motorcycles fired at them. Police fired back and the assailants fled

“A monk, whose name was not known, and three civilians died [sic: were murdered – dda] on the spot, one policeman and another five civilians were wounded in the shooting

“The dead civilians were identified as Somchai Khunkhliang, her young son Thitiwat and Chamnian Phuttharit.

    {May they rest in peace. And may their sadistic, hubristic mohammedan murderers be hunted down and subjected to justice. – dda}

“The injured — Pol L/C Udomchai Piewpong, Chinkrit Prommanee, 13, Chai Thongjua, 75, Khlao Laksap, 55, Paripath Kulnarong, 23, and Rampan Aksornkaew, 57 — were taken to hospital.”

{I will pray for their swift recovery, and for the families of the bereaved – for the families of the murdered monk, and for his brothers in the monastery; and for the families of Somchai Somchai Khunkhliang and Chamnian Phuttharit. – dda}.

And here is the account, in detail, of that murdered Buddhist bank worker, a young woman, with her name.

“The body of Sayamol sae Lim, 29, was discovered near her motorcycle on Pattani-Narathiwat route at Ban To Tee Tae in tambon Tonyong Jua Nga of Yaring district
“When security officers and a paramedic team arrived at the scene, they found Sayamol’s head and upper torso in flames. {Typical sadistic mohammedan overkill – dda}.

“Sayamol was an employee of Bangkok Bank’s Nong Chik branch

“Pol Lt Somchoke Mankhong of Yaring police station said the victim was returning to her home in Panare district on her motorcycle when assailants shot her, poured petrol over her body and set it afire. ”

Sometimes I suspect that all those passages in the Quran and Hadith that people suppose to be lurid descriptions of punishments supposedly to be inflicted in the hereafter are in fact meant to *also* function as instructions for methods of torture of the living, and mutilation/ desecration of the dead, *here and now*.

The other day, in the Comments to, of all places, an article in the ‘Guardian’, I came across a very interesting comment by someone who had worked as a teacher in the UK, and who had taught young Muslims in her classes.

She has a great moment of insight here, even if she doesn’t follow it through to the logical conclusion. It makes sense of the boasting and threats and vaunting overkill that Muslims display; it makes sense of, for example, Mohammed Merah blasting tiny 8 year old Miriam Monsonego in the head with a gun while he held her by her ponytail, or those other mohammedthugs who slit the throat of three-month-old Hadass Fogel in her crib, and the mohammedthugs – big brave men (NOT) – who gunned down this Thai Buddhist monk and the others who gunned down, from ambush, a 29 year old Buddhist woman, and then **set her body on fire**.

Here’s the thread I found the comment in, and the comment:

    http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/belief/2014/feb/09/fanatical-jihadis-theological-argument-islam-fundamentalists

In the discussion, people were going on about Muslim grievances, and this woman simply came back at them and said it has nothing to do with grievance, or revenge, at all: it is HUBRIS.

    “Yorks Girl”
    “9 FEBRUARY 2014 2.58 PM
“The reason being that the problem is one of ‘hubris’ **and nothing to do with religion or theology** {she got *that* bit wrong: it has EVERYTHING to do with ‘religion’; the next step to take is to realize that Islam is a ‘religion’ or cult that, to the nth degree, teaches, practises, sacralises and *celebrates* hubris in its adherents, for although they make a great parading display of their submission to allah, it is that ‘submission’ that turns every one of them into an agent or channel of the ultimate amoral despot allah, terrorising and subjugating anybody and everybody weaker than themselves – dda}.

‘Hubris is sometimes described as excessive pride but it is radically different from the normal pride we have in ourselves.
‘It is a recurring theme in ancient Greek tragedies and in the work of Artistotle – and well known to Islamic mediaeval scholars.
    ‘Aristotle defined hubris as follows:

    “to cause shame to the victim, not in order that anything may happen to you, nor because anything has happened to you, **but merely for your own gratification.** {my emphasis – dda}
“Hubris is not the requital of past injuries; this [requital] is revenge.

“As for the pleasure in hubris, its cause is this: **men think that by ill-treating others they make their own superiority the greater”** {my emphasis – dda}.

Now: imagine a cult that *teaches* and *encourages* this mentality, this sort of conduct, in its adherents; that encourages all its male adherents to behave like this toward all women whether they belong to the cult or not, and urges all adherents to behave this way toward all non-adherents.

And there it is, in plain sight, over a vast swath of the world – ISLAM.

    The Religion of Hubris.

Post scriptum – Kepha, I’ve read Aristotle – the Poetics, the Politics, the Ethics – but it was a long time ago. Can y ou or anyone else “place” that quote on Hubris, from Aristotle, that that English lady reproduced in her comment?

  8. Kepha says

    Feb 13, 2014 at 10:44 pm

I think the quote may be from Aristotle’s work on Rhetoric, but I’m not really sure.

BTW, I also incline to the view that the killings of the boys at the mosque in Naratiwat probably weren’t the work of the authorities or angry non-Muslims. I strongly suspect that the victim family probably irked the insurgents in some way; or it may be a petty inter-family feud; or, perhaps, the insurgents picked some random victims and hoped it would inflame opinion. My own guess about the Southern Thai insurgency is that a major reason for the anonymity of its leaders is that this insurgency really isn’t all that popular among the people it’s supposed to “liberate”.

The number of ethnic Malay and Cham Muslim transport workers all over Thailand is huge. Also, a lot of local police in southern Thailand are themselves Muslim. There’s a noticeable Chinese Muslim presence up in northern Thailand, too. If the southern Muslim insurgency really had that much resonance with Thai Muslims in general, it probably would’ve blown up a few things in Bangkok and in tourist spots or turned some Muslim officers and soldiers of the Royal Thai military and police by now.

  9. Defcon 4 says

    Feb 14, 2014 at 12:59 am

Either expel the muslimes now, or be subjugated and ethnically cleansed by them later. I suppose the Buddhists have noted the ethnic cleansing of other Buddhists (and Hindus, and Sikhs, and Christians) all over the Indian sub-continent and what religion is responsible for it.

  10. Erlwilliam says

    Feb 14, 2014 at 1:37 pm

People in general always speak of ethnic cleaning, now I ask you do the Government of Israel seek the ethnic cleansing of Christian Arabs? now they maybe indifferent to an Arabic Christians belief as per say… but on the other hand lets face it they are not expecting that Arab to burst on to the scene committing a jihad. So the issue is not ethnic cleansing in reality …. but ideology cleaning.

Now also it is natural for an individual to gather with people of his own kind . Now what does one mean gather or associate with people of his own kind. Now if adult generally it could be one a choice of a whole bunch of reasons…. Language, level of education , sporting interest, music, religion, political and even beauty or even race of a person or the skin color that a person has a very black coloured person may not like to have an intimate relationship with white coloured person. This was the point that Muhammad Ali stated when he was interviewed many years ago he wanted to marry someone of his kind and matches him… so we should be discriminating in our choices , and yet I can get along in my society in which there are people of differing features and live under ONE LAW that is equal to all
