Good thing the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowment is on this. Imagine if Muslims just willy-nilly started taking one-way trips to Mars. It’s outrageous! It’s bid’a! It sure is gratifying to see the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowment issuing a fatwa like this one instead of wasting its time fighting against the jihadist understanding of Islam that supposedly represents a “hijacking” of the religion. “One-way trip to Mars prohibited in Islam,” by Ahmed Shaaban for the Khaleej Times, February 19:
Fatwa committee under the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowment in the UAE says such a journey poses a real risk to life.
Promoting or being involved in a one-way trip to the Red Planet is prohibited in Islam, a fatwa committee under the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowment in the UAE has ruled.
“Such a one-way journey poses a real risk to life, and that can never be justified in Islam,” the committee said. “There is a possibility that an individual who travels to planet Mars may not be able to remain alive there, and is more vulnerable to death.”Whoever opts for this “hazardous trip”, the committee said, is likely to perish for no “righteous reason”, and thus will be liable to a “punishment similar to that of suicide in the Hereafter”.
The committee, presided by Professor Dr Farooq Hamada, said: “Protecting life against all possible dangers and keeping it safe is an issue agreed upon by all religions and is clearly stipulated in verse 4/29 of the Holy Quran: Do not kill yourselves or one another. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful.”
Late in April 2013, Mars One, a Dutch company, invited volunteers to fly and live on the Red Planet, but there is no technology so far that would enable a return trip from Mars to Earth. The company is planning the first such trip to Mars in 2023 and another crew every two years afterwards with the goal of establishing a permanent human colony.
The applicants must be aged between 18 and 40 years and in good physical condition. They have to pay only $38 for the trip. Thousands of volunteers, including some 500 Saudis and other Arabs, have reportedly applied for the mission which costs $6 billion. The committee indicated that some may be interested in travelling to Mars for escaping punishment or standing before Almighty Allah for judgment.
“This is an absolutely baseless and unacceptable belief because not even an atom falls outside the purview of Allah, the Creator of everything. This has also been clearly underscored in verse 19&20/93 of the Holy Quran in which Allah says: There is no one in the heavens and earth but that he comes to the Most Merciful as a servant. (Indeed) He has enumerated them and counted them a (full) counting.”
Echoing the same, Islamic researcher Dr Shaikh Mohammed Al Ashmawy said there is no debate in this issue. “Almighty Allah said in verse 2/195 in the Holy Quran: Do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction.”
Sheikh Mohammed Yusuf, Imam of the Amena mosque, said: “Man’s life is not his or her own property; it is God’s creation, and therefore suicide is prohibited in all religions, and of course by law.”

Only in Islam a ‘Prof’ will quote from the Quran – a piece of stuff that is blatantly obvious to a three years old. I am not exaggerating a bit. I just can never get it – what maked these guys a ‘Professor’ with output like that?

Muslims have never been about innovation. Islam was born in the 7th century and Muslims are bound and determined to keep it there. That’s where Muslim priorities lay.
And it’s all about priorities. Here’s yet another example.
Several years ago the Kuffir Space Gods had the bright idea of sending a Muslim (a Malay) into space. (Why? Some sort of outreach?) Only the Kuffirs could do such a thing because, on their own, the Muslims could never even think of such an adventure. Along the same lines that the new Muslim mega-clock in Mecca could never have been built without the ingenuity of the Kuffir. “O Allah [as in ‘I’ll hava Coke, or a Pepsi’], why have you cursed the best of people [the Quran-inspired descriptor used by Muslims to identify themselves] with no brains, but have amply supplied the infidels with knowledge & clear thinking, leaving us so ashamed and in poverty.”
But the Malaysian Space Agency (huh? who knew such an agency even existed!), a part of the Dept of Islamic Development Malaysia (cough, cough, “Islamic Development” exists in the same universe as “dry water”), wrestled with the greatest technical problem of the entire then-upcoming flight of going beyond the earth’s atmosphere. That problem, How to face Mecca from outer space?
That question, yes, that question, was the priority.
The result, A Guideline of Performing Ibadah at the International Space Station (ISS), which concludes, “It is hoped that this guideline could assist the Muslim Astronaut to ensure the success of the mission and at the same time attaining the redha (pleasure) of Allah SWT.”
Get that? The purpose of this nonsensical “guideline” (giggle) is to help the Muslim “ensure the success of the mission.”
This pdf guideline is found here,
http://makkah.files.wordpress.com/2007/10/a_guideline_ibadah_at_iss.pdf
This guideline also gives instruction on how to handle death in space. In case the deceased cannot “be brought to Earth for normal funeral process,” then “the deceased should be buried in space with a simple funeral process.”
Whew! A load off my mind. Leave it to the Muslim to come up with the really, really penetrating questions facing us all.
Except, how is one “buried” in space?

In the eyes of some extreme Jihadists, a trip to Mars would be fine if the ones taking the trip were infidels and unclean animals. They probably think that Mars would make a perfect disposal site because the infidels and unclean animals would be unable to return to Earth. Hopefully, humans will someday be able to tak two-way trips to Mars and that would foil any thoughts that some Jihadists may presently have about sending infidels and unclean animals on one-way trips to Mars.

Oh, the inconsistencies.
If it’s un-Islamic, wouldn’t hellfire be the guaranteed result?
I could make up better fatwas.

Would you allow a loved one to willfully commit suicide? Finally, a fatwa that makes sense.
donald howard says
Thats so funny that this professor mentions that willfully throwing away your lifeon a trip to mars being a mortal sin and refferenced the sanctity of life. When Islam and its followers are the ones blowing themselves up in the process of killing “Infidels”in gods name and telling these people that God will reward you in heaven.
Lets present a hypotheticle shall we?,If god were asked which one of the activities mentioned above if he had to choose was not OK,I’m betting my front seat in hell and a left nut it would be suicide bombing/murder.We would’nt be going to mars with the intention of commiting suicide,we would be going with the intention of making it back.
These islamists are so unbeleivably warped and stupid its a wonder they are able to breath on their own.

You know what else poses a real risk to life? Strapping on a suicide vest, or just going off to wage violent Jihad. Where are the Fatwas?

Exploring space? Expanding the frontiers of human knowledge? Not righteous. Slaughtering the Kuffar while “killing and being killed in the way of Allah”? Now *that’s* righteous!

And what about strapping explosives to yourself and detonating them in public?
That’s OK, but doing anything that poses a real risk to life, and the act of suicide are not.
I don’t suppose this “General Authority” will acknowledge the contradictions or invent a way claiming that no contradictions exists.

Now I’m really confused. According to islam, the earth is flat and to say otherwise is to deny what is written in the holly koram. By even admitting that manned space flight is possible is to deny this most holy truth of islam. So by muslim logic, shouldn’t those professors be stoned for apostasy? And since they invited it on themselves, wouldn’t that be an act of suicide of sorts?
Gee, islam is really confusing.
Theo Prinse says
Materialism and idealism are the two opposing philosophies mankind had been engaged in for millennia.
Materialism accepts as fact only empirical proof while idealism accepts only faith as truth and rejects scientific proof.
It is not the question whether empirical proof or no proof of the existence of non existence of a supreme being that is important but whether the nature of man and man surrounding nature is finite or infinite. That in the future super intelligence will become common and that beyond the furthest galaxy there will be infinite more galaxies and beyond the smallest thus far know particle there will be infinite much more and smaller particles and infinite empty space between them.
When nature is infinite then the meaning of the supreme being becomes secondary.
Most – but not all – materialists ‘believes’ that nature is finite arguing at 0 Kelvin there is no molecular movement suggesting there are no endless smaller particles then the electron.
Religion is one expression of the philosophy of idealism and deals primarily with the moral argumentation surrounding life and death.
The question: what is murder and what death is legitimate ? Decisions in these matters are important to end social chaos.
Moral argumentation regarding matters of live and death is an inalienable ability of every individual given by nature.
This moral ability cannot be defined or proven by science.
But this does not mean that morality exclusively belongs to the realm of the idealist religion.
The intellectual institutional elite of the Jewish and Christian religion all have tried to monopolize the ability to have moral opinions of every individual given by nature. The Christian elite even went as far as supersessionism, fulfillment theology, and replacement theology.
Islam is not a religious set of moral believes because it is littered with callings to murder all Christians, jews and apostates. Islam is a terrorist military doctrine disguised as a Abrahamite religion.
