Meet the old boss, same as the new boss. This is nothing more or less than a form of tribute, a jizya payment that will not help any Pakistanis and will only increase the Pakistani intelligentsia’s contempt for the West. It has been obvious for years that the Pakistanis have been aiding the same jihadists that the U.S. government has been giving them billions of dollars to fight. The New York Times reported on that at length back in 2008. And recently we learned that Ahmed Shuja Pasha, the head of the ISI, the Pakistani government’s spy service, knew the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden, and apparently so did many other top officials in the Pakistani government. So what will happen to this money? It is more likely that it will go for jihad than for education.
“Ex-British premier says international donors will give Pakistan $1 billion in education aid,” from the Associated Press, March 29 (thanks to Kenneth):
ISLAMABAD – Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown says international donors have pledged to provide Pakistan with about a billion dollars over the next three years to help it provide education to millions of out-of-school children.
Now a United Nations special envoy on global education, Brown said Saturday in Islamabad that the global community will partner with Pakistan in financing the biggest education expansion in the country’s history.
Pakistan recently doubled its education budget, from two to four percent of its gross domestic product.
Brown says the goal is to provide education to more than 55 million people over ten years old who are illiterate in Pakistan.
