Hamas-linked CAIR demands meeting with ABC over show about U.S. teen kidnapped by Saudis

Mar 20, 2014 9:16 pm By Robert Spencer

AliceInArabiaIt is almost inconceivable that ABC Family is going to run a show that could in any way be construed as “Islamophobic,” but Hamas-linked CAIR is swooping in just to make sure. Never mind the fact that children kidnapped and forced to live in Muslim countries is a real phenomenon (cf. Not Without My Daughter, Pat Roush, etc.) — Hamas-linked CAIR wants to preempt the possibility that any uncomfortable truths about Islam are aired.

“ABC Family’s ‘Alice in Arabia’ Draws Concern from Muslim Advocates,” by Andrea Seikaly for Variety, March 19 (thanks to Maxwell):

The greater Los Angeles-area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) announced Wednesday that it has asked ABC Family to meet with Muslim and Arab-American community leaders to discuss concerns about potential stereotyping in the pilot for the network’s new series “Alice in Arabia.”

One of three drama pilots ordered by ABC Family, the show centers on an American teen kidnapped by her Saudi Arabian family after tragedy befalls her parents.

In a letter sent to ABC Family president Tom Ascheim Tuesday, CAIR explained, “As the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, we are concerned about the negative impact this program could have on the lives of ordinary Arab-American and American Muslims.”

While CAIR-LA officials say they understand that the pilot’s writer (Brooke Eikmeier) says the series is designed to “give Arabs and Muslims a voice on American TV” and has “noble intentions,” they still believe the concerns brought to their org should be addressed.

“We are concerned that, given media references to the main character ‘surviving life behind the veil,’ the pilot and any resulting series may engage in stereotyping that can lead to things like bullying of Muslim students,” CAIR-LA exec director Hussam Ayloush said in a statement. “We urge ABC Family Channel to meet with representatives of the Muslim and Arab-American communities to discuss this important issue.”

This is not the first time that Washington-based CAIR, the nation’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy org, has spoken out. CAIR previously challenged actual and potential anti-Muslim stereotypes in “Executive Decision,” “24,” “The Siege,” “True Lies,” “Rules of Engagement,” “Obsession,” “The Third Jihad,” “Jihad in America” and “The Sum of All Fears.” The org has also acted as a consultant on films including DreamWorks Animation’s “The Prince of Egypt.”

In response to CAIR’s reaction, an ABC Family spokesperson said Wednesday, “We hope people will wait to judge this show on its actual merits once it is filmed. The writer is an incredible storyteller and we expect ‘Alice’ to be a nuanced and character driven show.”

The intention is to show a typical dress of woman in Saudi ie. the burka. It is not intended to show the actual woman. As you are so keen eyed you will also notice the eyebrows are quite different also. Much darker and longer.

Muslims are backward. They like to live in the 15 century. Women have no human rights. They are not treated like equals. They cannot leave their house unless accompanied by a male relative. They cannot drive . They have to hide their face as if they are ashamed. They have to enter their house through a seperate entrance. If they step out of line they are executed by a family member. About 20 years ago (aprx) the BBC told the story of a Saudi princess that was executed for falling in love with a Kafir. They were going to execute her with a sword but at the last moment they had a change of heart and shot her in the head with a golden pistol. The BBC caught lotsa flak for telling the story on tv. The Saudis were pissed right off and tried to stop the broadcast of the show. Their quaint/backward/violent beliefs are laughed at by the civilised world.

We have never been as backward ! More so than today ( but one hundred years ago few drove a car !) and women were never gentially mutilated or married in medieval times at 6 or 9 and rarely at 12 . During the wars of the roses, 14th century Britain,Margaret Beaufort was married off at 12 for political reasons and it was seen then as scandalous. (HenryV111’s youngestbwife was 17)
Women never had burkha’s thrown over them either’ polygamy was not
Practiced, neither were honour killings and the list goes on.
Medieval Christians were never as backward as Muslims are today.

        Quelle Merde!

Oh the poor oppressed American women. A century ago American women were out in public, getting involved in the political process (Women’s vote movement was gaining momentum), in Wyoming they already had the vote, and in 1916 Wyoming sent Jeanette Rankin to Congress!

The list could easily continue. Yes, Women were not considered full citizens a century ago, but they were able to work toward it (with a good deal of success, even then!), without fear of an “honor killing,” and were FAR better off than today’s Saudi women.

        How could anyone claim differently?

“About 100 years ago (aprx), females in the US were not allowed to smoke, to drink, to vote, to drive, etc.”

This is not true. My own grandmother, who was born in 1880, smoked, drank, and was one of the first automobile drivers in New York City. The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, passed in 1920, provided for women’s suffrage, but some states had already granted it. (Wyoming was the first.)

      • Rob Crawford says

        Mar 21, 2014 at 1:22 pm

I’ve never seen US laws banning women from drinking or smoking, and in reality women had the vote in some states at the founding.

And 100 years ago almost no one could drive, because in 1914 there weren’t that many cars.

Finally, TODAY, how many women are allowed to vote, drink, drive, walk around with their faces exposed to the sun, and escape burning buildings in Saudi Arabia.

What an islam0retarded comment. A hundred years ago, automobiles were as rare as an honest muslime.
I’d also like to see proof that women weren’t allowed to smoke or drink in the USA — as in legally prohibited, anytime in the 20th century — outside of Prohibition.

Interesting you indirectly admit the practices in Muslim countries are wrong. Here is a big difference – in the West the human Rights progressed because the society is NOT run by the moron Mullahs. In hundred years time Muslim world is not going to look any different than today – there is a big reason for that … QURAN!

I like how CAIR trumpets itself as “the largest Muslim civil rights organization..etc..” when I think it numbered only 80 employees prior to 9/11 according to one article I saw several years ago (I need to check that) so it can give the impression that it is “huge” when it is not in relative or absolute terms. I hope your staff informs ABC of CAIR’s nefarious terrorist-abetting history and plead with them not to bow down like an obsequious P.C. addled weakling to their bully tactics. If anything, I hope CAIR understands that one can ONLY come away with a stereotypal view of Saudi society when half the population is ensconced in black tent material and that they are probably never is allowed to talk with “strangers” on the street or exhibit any non-conformist personality (for fear of private and public reprisals and rebukes). They other half wear only 2 types of outfits and they all act pretty much the same in public. Except for the Filipino immigrant workers, there really is no diversity. I hope the ABC writer includes a backstory of child-bride rapes or genital mutilation to be “authentic”. Maybe it will feature for the sake of comic relief the main heroine’s Saudi rebellious “best girl friend” who gets both of them in trouble (e.g.: cruising in their Audi and crashing into grandpa at an intersection in the red-lantern district, stealing the answers to a Koran exam late at night at the Madrassa’s teacher’s locked office but getting stuck in the A/C duct, dressing one of themselves up as a male “cousin” so as to escort the other one out on the town to a Neil Diamond concert but on the way home mixes her friend up with another burka-clad girl who is the chief iman’s 3rd wife!)…Now THAT would be true daring and their sweeps week ratings would be stratospheric!

CAIR…You just can’t have kuffar claiming that Mahoundians kidnap children and spirit them away to an Islamic paradise for fun, profit and exploitation. We all know that this never happens, but someone might believe this and think lowly of Mahoundians and Islam. A fanatic kuffar might even attack a innocent believer over it.

Rasool Obama was not kidnapped but he was spirited away to an Islamic paradise as a child, where they fed him dog meat. The damage is visible to this day.
