Good to know that this chap has his priorities straight. He doesn’t bother meeting with al Qaeda members and explaining to them how they’re misunderstanding the Qur’an. He doesn’t waste his time teaching against the jihadist understanding of the Qur’an. He doesn’t accost his fellow Muslims and try to convince them that non-Muslims should enjoy equal rights with Muslims in a free, pluralistic society. No, he has his priorities in perfect working order.
“Fatwa prohibits ‘All You Can Eat’ offers,” from Al Arabiya, March 13 (thanks to Lookmann):
A fatwa (religious edict) against “all you can eat” buffets by a Saudi cleric has stirred debate among users of social networking site Twitter.
The cleric, Saleh al-Fawzan, recently issued a fatwa through a kingdom-based Quranic TV station prohibiting open buffets, saying that the value and quantity of what is sold should be pre-determined before it is purchased.
“Whoever enters the buffet and eats for 10 or 50 riyals without deciding the quantity they will eat is violating Sharia (Islamic) law,” said Fawzan on al-Atheer channel.
Using the Twitter hashtag “prohibiting-open-buffet” (in Arabic), some of the site’s users criticized Fawzan’s fatwa.
“Restaurants will be ruined if they didn’t quantify the food they sold. This negates the sheikh’s premise that the quantity is unknown,” said on Twitter user.
Mere fatwa“This is not Quran just a mere fatwa, if you want to follow it, you are a free man but you can not impose it on others,” wrote another.
One user sarcastically wrote: “Congratulations! Open buffets have made it in the list for what is forbidden for us.”
However, some comments were posted supporting the cleric.
“It is funny, those who call for discussions, they do not discuss evidence or what the sheikh has proposed but discuss his person.”
While another said: “The disaster is those who criticize the sheikh are ignorant, they do not know.”
The fatwa has also caught the attention of local and regional newspapers.
Saudi’s al-Madina newspaper published a headline on Wednesday that read: “Fatwa prohibits open buffets creates uproar on Twitter.”
Egyptian news outlets Sada el-Balad and Nawaret carried the story with accompanying videos of the interview where the cleric proclaimed the fatwa.

The only fatwa funnier than this is the one about the fatwa against going to Mars.
Bad Mo Foe says
I dunno, the one about men being able to spend time with women not their wives if they breastfeed from them is pretty funny!
“In May 2007 Dr. Izzat Atiyya, lecturer at Cairo’s Al-Azhar University, issued a fatwa that suggested that male and female colleagues could use breastfeeding to get around a religious ban on being alone together.”

I dunno, I think the fatwa against women using air conditioners unless their menfolk are present was pretty funny. If I understood the reasoning it was that the chilly breeze would make the woman appear to be aroused.
St. Michael Defend Us says
The REAL reason for the fatwa about the air conditioning?
The imam had a running argument with his wife/wives about the electric bill. He hated them running the AC while he wasn’t home to enjoy it himself. They are mere women, after all, and not worthy of consideration. Tired of their disobedience, he pulled a fatwa out of “islam” to really put the fear in them. Just like old Mo had “revelations” justifying whatever he wanted to do.
Petey says
Oh come on dude, the one about the anal sex with a gay man is ok for the purpose of a jihad warrior, to enlarge the capacity of his anus for a bigger bomb; has got to make the list
revg says
We need more all-u-can-eat buffets!!
Odd, the MoonDoggie is critical of the Pope with regard to pedophilic behavior of a portion of the clergy, but yet, what of his own religion? At least the Pope’s religion condemns those actions.
Would this fatwa be called the “too-fat-fatwa”? Only a muslim would be quick to decide that a person is incapable of minding their own caloric intake. All must be controlled.
Ridiculing islam is just too easy. No wonder they are so easily offended.
joeb says
Don’t know about anyone else, but it seems to me the islamic stories around and about appear to be increasingly bold and confident, or just plain nuts, like this one, or the one about Mars.
Does this fatwa mean my local, lo-rise salesmen’s Hilton will suffer a terrorist attack?
Salah says
“Haha, number 0, you are a funny one!”
Guess who is the funny one….
Muhammad breast-fed by his uncle Abu Talib !!!!!!!
“When the Holy Prophet (s.a) was born he remained for days without milk. Abu Talib himself breast fed him and Allah sent milk through his nipples.”

Muslim cleric issues fatwa saying “all you can eat” buffets violate Islamic law

Does that mean that the buffet line down at the local Golden Corral will be free of Hijabs and those creepy-ass mustache-less beards?
Or does it mean that HomeTown Buffet and Sweet Tomatoes are going to see an uptick in suicide bombings now that they have been declared Haram?

Nope—too busy issuing frothing-at-the-mouth denunciations of sending Valentine’s Day cards, bans on walking dogs, and stupidity like this…

Yeah—although even this is not exactly the sign of sanity we might take it for. Are Muslims as exercised over violent Jihad, child marriage, and “Honor Killings” as they are over being prohibited from going to Abdul’s All-You-Can-Eat after the Mosque? I wouldn’t count on it…

This is what pious Muslims consider a “disaster”. Bloody Jihad and Shari’ah, not so much…

All you can eat buffets are banned in Saudi Arabia, but it’s okay to rape, torture and kill your 5 year old daughter as long as you offer money for your offense. These people must have worms in their brains from eating halal certified food.
Medina says
Apparently this cleric has never been to a Univ of MO-Columbia dining hall during ramadan where the faithful can be seen gorging before sunrise and again after sunset. They even petitioned the university to open the hall sooner so that more gastrointenstinal devotion may be observed.
Bill Poser says
I think that this actually makes sense, if one accepts Islamic principles. The objection is the same as to conventional forms of insurance – the restaurant owner is gambling on the total amount the diners will eat.
Cindy Mccoy says
These folks are crazy!!!!!! They make-up rules as they go along. I’m pretty sure that it is not in the koran that all you can eat buffets are wrong according to the guy who made this up.

What about the attempt by Egyptian constitution framers that women should be prevented from sea bathing because apparently the sea is male in Arabic and that would meant hey were committing adultery!
More evidence ,if any were needed that some Muslims are quite demented

My favorite Fartwa is the one banning women from touching bananas and cucumbers. By inference does that mean that a man that touches a banana is gay and should be stoned.

OH NO!!!!!!! Krispy Kreme Donuts are harem, so does that mean if you see a babe in a berka in a Krispy Kreme, she must have a bomb in her bra.

The Muslim desire for iron control over others is completely totalitarian.
I have to admit—with a few exceptions, I personally find most buffets a bit tacky, food snob that I am.
But so what? I have absolutely no inclination to stop other people from patronizing and enjoying them.
But then, I’m not a supremacist Muslim…
