Jihad Watch

Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Robert Spencer in PJ Lifestyle: 5 Muslim Movie Reviews

Mar 10, 2014 7:03 pm By Robert Spencer

2ya-rabIt’s Monday Night At the Movies with Muslims! My latest in PJ Lifestyle:

Siskel and Ebert they ain’t, but Islamic scholars, supremacists, jihadists and pressure groups have made their views known, often in quite colorful ways, about numerous motion pictures that you may want to catch. So grab some popcorn and some old tomatoes: it’s movie time down at the mosque!

5. Thumbs down: Noah

Russell Crowe’s lavish Biblical epic Noah is about to be released in the Middle East, and Muslim scholars are enraged. It has been banned in Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. Cairo’s Al-Azhar, which Barack Obama has praised as “a beacon of Islamic learning,” issued a statement denouncing the film as un-Islamic and calling for it to be banned. Some Muslim scholars in Egypt have even called for the destruction of any theatre that dared to show the film.

The film has aroused such fury because, as Al-Azhar explained, depicting a prophet of Islam (as Noah is; his story is told and retold in the Qur’an, and he gives his name to the Muslim holy book’s 71st sura) “contradicts the stature of prophets and messengers … and antagonises the faithful.” Mahmoud Mehanna, a member of Al-Azhar’s Senior Scholars, added that “prophets, their voices, and even their shadows cannot be depicted,” helpfully explaining that “prophets are holy people.”

This is, of course, why we have not seen Muslims make laudatory films about Muhammad, even for proselytizing purposes: the story of a prophet who cannot be shown, even in shadow, and whose voice cannot be heard makes for a dramatic vacancy the size of a movie directed by Peter Jackson (the perpetrator of the interminably turgid Lord of the Rings series). Those who dare transgress against these strictures and depict a prophet face the prospect of being declared a blasphemer, which could mean demonstrations, riots, death fatwas, and worse.

This is true of Russell Crowe, even though his film depicts a lesser prophet. He may have started out trying to be the next Charlton Heston, and could wind up instead being the next Salman Rushdie.

ya-rab-poster

4. Thumbs down: Ya Rab: Jihad Against Terrorism

Ya Rab: Jihad Against Terrorism is a Bollywood film that, according to Business of Cinema, “broadly deals with the issue of Jihad and how Quran has been misinterpreted to give birth to terrorism.”

You’d think that peaceful Muslims would be glad to see this addressed — certainly I myself am interested to see how Ajaz Khan makes a case that “Quran has been misinterpreted to give birth to terrorism,” since jihad terrorists routinely quote chapter and verse of the Qur’an to justify their actions, and for years I’ve called upon Muslims who claim that this is a “hijacking” of Islam to refute their exegesis.

Instead, however, Muslims in India protested against the film, and a Muslim group, Jamiatul Ulema-e-Maharashtra, went to court in a failed effort to get it banned. This was even after they succeeded in getting the filmmakers to remove portions they found objectionable. Indian Muslim leader Syed Furqan fulminated:

“Why the film has portrayed only Muslims as terrorists? It would have shown people from other religions as terrorists. The fact is that the film portrays bad and negative image of Muslims. Far from clearing the misconceptions, it will create hatred against the Muslim community.”

These are common argument that we hear in the West also: that other religions inspire terrorists as well, and to speak about jihad terror will only lead people to hate Muslims. But to depict modern-day terrorists who quoted the Bible or Bhagavad Gita or any other religious texts to justify violence, the filmmakers would have had to enter wholly into the realm of fantasy. And clearly Ajaz Khan didn’t make the film because he hated Muslims, but because he wanted to create a Muslim effort against jihad terror. That instead he met with rage, protests, and demands that his film be banned is telling.

Innocence-of-Muslims

3. Thumbs down: Innocence of Muslims

This is, of course, the amateurish YouTube video trailer depicting Muhammad doing things that early Muslim sources say he did, which Barack Obama and his aides blamed for the Benghazi jihad attack of September 11, 2012.

Subsequently, there really were worldwide Muslim riots and rage over this video, followed by Barack Obama intoning at the UN that “the future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam” and Hillary Clinton assuring the father of one of the Benghazi victims that the filmmaker would be imprisoned – which he was, making him America’s first political prisoner and martyr for the freedom of speech.

All this culminated in the 9th Appeals Court’s recent ruling that Google had to take the video down from YouTube, because an actress in it, Cindy Lee Garcia, objected to how her voice had been re-dubbed and how she had been misled as to the nature of the project. Google pointed out how ridiculous this ruling was:

The panel has adopted a novel interpretation of copyright law that will invite uncertainty and chaos for the entertainment industry, documentary filmmakers, amateur content creators, and for online hosting services like YouTube, allowing bit players in movies, videos, and other media to control how and when creative works are publicly displayed.

The court later allowed the video to be restored if Garcia’s five-second appearance were edited out. One thing was clear throughout the whole legal battle: if the film had been critical of any other religious figure, it never would have been ordered down, or have become the epicenter of such intense controversy. But the future indeed appears not to belong either to those who slander the prophet of Islam, or who disclose uncomfortable truths about him….

There is more.

    “Ya Rab” means “Oh Lord”.

I’ll second that! Who do they think they are? Ahmadis? Sunnite Muslims believe in military jihad, preferably under the command of the caliph, but not necessarily.

And when Muslims commit 90% of terrorist acts every year and 3 terrorist acts every day of the year, they are touchy that anyone NOTICES it and angry that anyone MENTIONS it. Yes, let’s whitewash jihad and cover up Islamic terrorism.

Drawing attention to the terrorists makes it harder for them to go undetected in the population.

I guffawed at the description of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings as interminable and turgid – perfect words. I am amused by the concept of “Ya Rab” as there must have been some seriously intense doublethink and mental gymnastics going on when they wrote the script. I can almost smell the smoldering turbans.

As far as the “Innocence of Muslims,” you are dead on correct in calling Nakoula Basseley Nakoula the first political prisoner of the United States. I have heard interviews of that man, including on Mark Levin’s show, and he is a courageous and patriotic American, with no ill intent in his heart, and amazingly still loves his adopted country even though they tried to stab him in the back and throw him to the mohammedan dogs. If there was ever a reason for impeachment of a President, the flagrant stomping on of that man’s constitutional rights for political gain is it.

        Hi, rezali !

Come back for another pasting ? Good. It’s such fun seeing you being totally trounced.

”He needs to cut the beard hair below the nose and above the upper lip”

Is that how you do yours ?

By the way, below the nose, and above the upper lip, is the same place, even on mohammedans !

”Is nothing holy any more for the Kuffar?”

Well, certainly not your psychopath, murdering, raping, torturing, thieving, paedophile ‘prophet’ (perdition be upon him) !

” Prophets like Noah (PBUH), Isa (pbuh) and Muhammad (SAW) did not do things for profit or money….. ”

Noah certainly wasn’t a mohammedan ‘prophet’, and the ‘isa’ you mohammedans have appropriated, claiming he is Christ, has absolutely **nothing** in common with the Christ depicted in the NT. According to you mohammedans, ‘isa’ never died on the cross, or was resurrected; instead, ‘isa’ inveigled some poor man into dying **in his stead** ( such is the hideous inverted morality of you mohammedans, you actually find this despicable cowardliness **admirable**), and is supposed to return in the ‘end times’ to destroy all the crosses, and kill all the Jews and Christians.

mohammed didn’t do things for profit or money ? Oh, come off it, rezali, there’s a whole chapter of the foul claptrap you call the koran, devoted to ”booty”, and numerous hadiths, (including **strong** ones !) enumerate the greed and graspingness of paedophile mohammed.

How’s the old brainpan standing up to all that rocking, swaying, and wailing to the old koran , plus banging your head on the floor 5 times a day ?

Clearly, not very well ! You’re getting stupider than ever; nearly everyone here has read the tripe filled koran, and many have read the hadiths and sira which lay out for all to see, the evil and greedy behaviour of old mohammed.

Are you hoping to catch and fool some newcomer to JW ? Fat chance, me old son; I, and many others will have great pleasure and enjoyment in exposing your ridiculous posts, and deconstructing your mohammedan ‘dawa’ , (you really are bad at this).

        More later, chumbawumba !

It is laughable how, in the beginning, God made Ad am and Eve to populate the world, not Adam and Eve, Sahari, Glenys and Aisha. Yet He permits Muslims to have four wives in an already crowded world?
According to Sura 3:54, Allah is the great deceiver. So why would the creator of the Universe and everything in it need to deceive? Of course He wouldn’t, because the God of Abraham (not Allah), is Holy, perfect and just. He loves His creation. After Adam fell to the real great deceiver (Satan), He had a plan to bring His creation back to Himself, through The Word made flesh, Jesus Christ.

If you really wanted to know the God of Abraham, then ask Him to reveal Himself to you, but do not call Him allah, let Him reveal Himself to you in His own Name.

“the future must not belong to those who slander the prophet”

“Innocence of Muslims” contains dramatization of events which are available for everyone to read about via muslim source texts. For example one scene from the movie is based on this muslim source text: Mishkat Al Masabih, Volume II, p. 1361:

“She told that the people used to choose: ‘A’isha’s day to bring their gifts, seeking thereby to please God’s messenger. She said that God’s messenger’s wives were in two parties, one including ‘A’isha, Hafsa, Safiya, and Sauda, and the other including Umm Salama and the rest of God’s messenger’s wives. Umm Salama’s party spoke to her telling her to ask God’s messenger to say to the people, “If anyone wishes to make a present to God’s messenger, let him present it to him wherever he happens to be.” She did so and he replied, “Do not annoy me regarding ‘A’isha, for inspiration has not come to me when I was in any woman’s garment but ‘A’isha’s.” They then called Fatima, sent her to God’s messenger, and she spoke to him, but he replied, “Do you not like what I like, girlie?” She said, “Certainly,” so he said, “Then love this woman.”

It seems that the muslims are complaining about their own texts.

      …………………….

This is true, No Fear—but what pious Mohammedans object to, besides the depiction of the “Prophet” in general, is when Infidels look at these texts *critically*.

In other words, if a pious Muslim looks at Muhammed’s career as a war lord, caravan-raider, slaver, and mass murderer and thinks “brilliant military strategist”, this is fine—but if Infidels regard him as having been a dangerous sociopath, then its time to riot.

If a devout “believer” looks at his having raped captives, sex slaves, and and a nine-year-old girl and thinks “what divine virility!”, this is fine, but if decent Infidels regard him as a pedophile and sex predator, Muslims will respond with death threats.

Muslims see all this bloody horror as proof of Muhammed’s being the “perfect man”, and will not allow anyone to expose this pathology for what it is.

Did someone literally make a Broadway production out of mocking Islam recently? I think it was called “The Koran”, and it was given a live preview at the Tony Awards.

Oh, no, wait, that was “The Book of Mormon”. I think the Mormons bought some advertisement space in the playbill. No riots yet.

Did taxpayers fund (through NEA) a depitction of Aisha covered in elephant dung, and a Koran submerged in a vat of urine? If so, then Muslim taxpayers (and others) were forced to pay for it. No wonder they are enraged!

Oh, no, wait, that was the Virgin Mary covered in dung and a crucifix submerged in urine, funded by the government. Catholics held nonviolent protests against the fact that they were forced to pay for it. No riots occurred.

Anyway, I’m glad the president declared that the future should not/must not belong to those who slander Mormons or Catholics.

Prophets of the “lesser” or “greater” variety have charisma and Karma vetted/bestowed upon them by Allah SWT and you cannot ever portray that correctly.

Prophets carry an aura which gives them authority, leadership and closeness to Allah SWT at all all times. …it is why they have such following …you cannot capture that in a movie by corrupt Harami Kufar actors.

Noah is not a prophet. He’s one of the pre-flood Patriarchs of… oh, wait, you’re thnking about Nuh. Nope, this movie is based on the original biblical source, not the copyright-infringing islamic rip-off version.

“who the hell guided Russell ….did he even ask learned Islamic Scholars for their opinion on *their* owned prophets?”
That’s wrong on several levels. Russell is only the leading character. Not the writer, not the director, not the person whose job was to investigate the source material. Why would he need to talk to islamic scholars (lol, what an oxymoron!) regarding biblical figures? If anything he’d need to consult jew/christian scholars since this film is about a biblical figure.

      …………………………………

This is, of course, not the point. So far, reviews have been mixed at best.

But the issue is whether film maker—or any artist—has the freedom to create, or whether they are held under Shari’ah strictures on freedom of expression.

We all know what this pious Mohammedan’s response would be.

Hint: the “Prophet” gets a big cut of all the plunder…

Once again, this pious Mohammedan believes that the appalling “values” of Shari’ah be imposed on decent Infidels—and if Infidels have different beliefs, it is because they are profane.

But the fact is that there is a long and glorious tradition in the Christian West of Biblical depictions.

Theatrical productions grew out of Medieval “Paradise Plays” and “Miracle Plays”—this is the root of all modern film.

In fact, the Bible has been a major source of inspiration for artists, authors, and musicians of all kinds—something arid Mohammedans like Rezali Mehil are completely incapable of grasping.

There is Michaelangelo’s iconic fresco of The Flood in the Sistine Chapel—and works by many other artists:

Robert Spencer in PJ Lifestyle: 5 Muslim Movie Reviews
    …………………………………

Why do so many of these Muslim movie reviews come with threats to murder the cast and crew and burn down the movie theater showing it?

Please note that the question above is of the rhetorical variety.

    More:

Cairo’s Al-Azhar, which Barack Obama has praised as “a beacon of Islamic learning,” issued a statement denouncing the film as un-Islamic and calling for it to be banned. Some Muslim scholars in Egypt have even called for the destruction of any theatre that dared to show the film.
    …………………………………

Well, what’s a “beacon of Islamic learning” *without* calls to crush freedom of expression?

    More:

The film has aroused such fury because, as Al-Azhar explained, depicting a prophet of Islam…
    …………………………………

Never mind that Noah is a *Biblical* epic—Muslims claim all the Jewish patriarchs and Christian Jesus as “Muslim prophets”.

    More:

This is, of course, why we have not seen Muslims make laudatory films about Muhammad, even for proselytizing purposes…
    …………………………………

Muslim Moustapha Akkad tried this back in the 1970s—he even got Anthony Quinn and Irene Pappas to star in this opus, though the final film is pretty cheesy.

The upshot? Muslims rioted and took hostages. The director himself was murdered in a Jihad terror attack along with his daughter—although Dar-al-Islam is so bloody that this bombing was actually unrelated to the film.

In any case, as reverential as “Mohammad, Messenger of God” was—and as much as it was intended as Da’wa—it still aroused the wrath of pious Muslims.

    More:

Ya Rab: Jihad Against Terrorism is a Bollywood film that, according to Business of Cinema, “broadly deals with the issue of Jihad and how Quran has been misinterpreted to give birth to terrorism.”
    …………………………………

This one, of course, if grimly hilarious—a movie intended as Taqiyya to fool the credulous Kuffar by whitewashing JIhad still manages to enrage a whole lotta Mohammdans…

And of course they *really* hate the ineptly executed but quite factual “Innocence of Muslims” for daring to show the baleful “Prophet” as he really was.

    More:

Thumbs down: The Sum of All Fears

This hyper-sensitivity with regard to Islam goes back a long way in Hollywood. Even films about terrorism rarely depict Islamic jihadists, and when they do, there is invariably a moderate Muslim character on the other side, fighting against the jihadists with all he has.
    …………………………………

Yup—this was true in The Kingdom, about Americans partnering with Saudi cops against terrorists. It was also true in the first Ironman film, where badguys obviously based on the Taliban are balanced by a brilliant heroic Afghan scientist (yes, folks, that’s why they call this fantasy…)

I’m sure The Sum of All Fears would have done the same—but CAIR pressured them, and despite the fact that the film was made right after 9/11, the terrorists were changed from the “Islamic extremists” of Tom Clancy’s novel to generic neo-Nazis.

Never mind that neo-Nazis—unpleasant characters though they are—have never actually committed any large-scale terrorism. Would that we could say the same of Muslims…

This is also why so many movie villains are—completely implausibly—sneering Brits.

The civilized English are not going to complain—they just have a good chuckle over it. There is even a tongue-in-cheek Jaguar commercial touting the cars as the favorite of suave British villains…

But the fact is that Muslims pressure and scream “Islamophobia” to impose Shari’ah strictures—or else they just proceed right to the riots and death threats.

But as Robert Spencer points out, there is one type of film that Muslims enthusiastically embrace, and that is filmed Jihad violence—amputations, stonings, and beheadings.

    God, I hate Islam.
