“The 99” was created to whitewash Islam’s image in the face of global jihad terror, but even that is not good enough for these Muslim clerics.
“Allah did not create man so that he could have fun. The aim of creation was for mankind to be put to the test through hardship and prayer. An Islamic regime must be serious in every field. There are no jokes in Islam. There is no humor in Islam. There is no fun in Islam. There can be no fun and joy in whatever is serious.” — Ayatollah Khomeini
“Saudi clerics urge faithful to shun ‘Islamic’ superhero series,” from AFP, March 24:
Riyadh (AFP) – Saudi Arabia’s top clerics have declared an Islam-inspired cartoon series, which earned praise from US President Barack Obama, a “work of the devil” that Muslims should not watch.
The television version of superhero comic book “The 99” is being aired by Saudi-owned satellite channel MBC3, based in Dubai in the neighbouring United Arab Emirates.
But in a religious decree carried by Saudi websites on Monday, the clerics ruled the series blasphemous because the superheroes of its title are based on the 99 attributes ascribed to Allah in the Koran.
“The 99 is a work of the devil that should be condemned and forbidden in respect to Allah’s names and attributes,” the clerics, led by the kingdom’s mufti, Abdulaziz al-Sheikh, said.
The original comic strip version, first released in 2006, had already ran into opposition from Muslim hardliners not only in Saudi Arabia but also in neighbouring Kuwait, where it was created and produced by media executive Nayef al-Matawa.
The comics — produced in English as well as Arabic — won praise, however, not only from Obama but also from Kuwait’s emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah, for their message of moderation and cultural dialogue.
They have been sold around the world and have also spawned a merchandise range and a theme park in Kuwait as well as the Arabic-language television series.
Ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia applies a strict version of Islam.

I don’t know about anyone else, but knowing what I know about Islam, I find that graphic of the embodiments or visualisations of the 99 names of the infernal allah to be , well, creepy as.
One could give it an alternative caption – The Possessed.

If Islam allows jokes what will Muslims say about dirty old men who ‘marry’ six year old girls?

On the other hand I suppose this is welcome to them
A children’s educational magazine sponsored by the Palestinian Authority extols the wit and wisdom of Adolf Hitler — by wrongly attributing 10 quotes to the Nazi leader.
Zayzafuna, a youth magazine whose advisory board includes Palestinian Authority Deputy Minister of Education Jihad Zakameh, published the list of quotes in its August edition in a section titled “Among Hitler’s sayings,” Palestinian Media Watch reported.
“If you were stabbed in the back, know that you are in front.”
– Quote wrongly attributed to Adolf Hitler
“If you were stabbed in the back, know that you are in front,” one saying read.
Several of the sayings appear to be slight variations from anonymous quotations or those found on “words of wisdom” websites. For example, “Don’t argue with a fool because people won’t be able to tell you apart” has commonly been attributed to American author Mark Twain.
Palestinian Media Watch officials said the purpose of the list is seemingly to present Hitler as a “sharp-witted and wise” person.
“This is not the first time that the PA-associated youth magazine has presented Hitler in a positive light,” PMW’s website reads. “In 2011, PMW exposed an essay in Zayzafuna that glorified Hitler and portrayed him as a role model. The essay expressed admiration for Hitler because he killed Jews – an act presented as benefiting all of humanity. In the essay, Hitler says to a Palestinian girl in her dream: ‘I killed them [the Jews] so you would all know that they are a nation which spreads destructions all over the world.’”
In late 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reportedly canceled its funding of the Zayzafuna magazine, citing “inflammatory statements” made in the periodical.
Nazi sympathy among some Palestinians has made headlines twice this year, first when a flag with the swastika was flown next to a mosque in the Arab town of Beit Omar, about a half-hour south of Jerusalem. Israelis in the area notified the Israel Defense Force, which had the offensive banner removed.

…………………………………..
How many times have we run into *this* phenomenon before? It dates back at least to the making of the film “The Messenger” back in the 1970s—even though the movie was careful never to directly depict the “Prophet” and was fawningly (and falsely) hagiographic in its characterization, it was still met by screams for its banning, riots, kidnappings, and threats of bombing.
There have been *many* more examples over the years, where Taqiyya runs into pure Islam.
This pure Islam gives us a vision of life under full Shari’ah—where there not only would be no Superman, Batman, and Spiderman, but not even queasy hybrids like “The 99”.
Still, projects that whitewash Islam can serve to “soften up” the credulous Kuffar into a false belief that Islam isn’t really all that bad, or all that different from the free West.
