The problem with most of what the governor of Xinjiang, Nur Bekri, denounces here as “heresy” is that it can easily be justified from Islamic texts — as you can see below, where I have cited the relevant texts after Bekri’s particular assertions. This is why Bekri and the Chinese authorities will find that the problem of “religious extremism” is a “tumor” that is not as easy to excise as they might think.
“China official says Islamists seek to ban laughter and crying,” from Reuters, April 7 (thanks to Maxwell):
(Reuters) – The governor of China’s restive far western region of Xinjiang wrote on Monday that Islamist militants were trying to ban laughter at weddings and crying at funerals, as he appealed to people to stamp out the “tumour” of extremism.
Xinjiang, resource-rich and strategically located on the borders of central Asia, has been beset by violence for years, blamed by the government on Islamist militants and separatists.
Exiles and many rights groups say the real cause of the unrest is China’s heavy-handed policies, including curbs on Islam and the culture and language of the Muslim Uighur people who call Xinjiang home.
China’s nervousness about Islamist extremism has grown since a car burst into flames on the edge of Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in October, and 29 people were stabbed to death last month in the southwestern city of Kunming.
Beijing blamed Xinjiang militants for both.
Writing in the official Xinjiang Daily, Xinjiang governor Nur Bekri said that acts of terror had been made possible by extremists taking advantage of people’s faith, especially “young people who have seen little of the world”.
“In order to incite fanaticism and control believers, religious extremists have blatantly distorted religious teachings, making up heresy such as ‘jihadist martyrs go to heaven,’ ‘killing a pagan is worth over 10 years of piety,’ and ‘one gets whatever one wants in heaven’,” he wrote.
“They use this to bewilder believers into what they believe is ‘jihad’ in the form of suicide terrorist attacks or other violence,” Bekri added.
“Jihadist martyrs go to heaven” is a heresy? But the Qur’an says: “Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, so they kill and are killed.” (9:111) The believers give their lives and their properties to Allah, and kill and are killed in his cause, and in exchange they will have Paradise. Is that not “jihadist martyrs go to heaven”?
People who do not follow the strictures of the Islamists are condemned by them as “traitors” and “scum”, he said.
China’s ruling atheist Communist Party has issued similar warnings in the past about extremism, accompanied by a harsh crackdown on suspected militants.
Uighurs have traditionally followed a moderate form of Islam, but many have begun adopting practices more commonly seen in Saudi Arabia or Pakistan, such as full-face veils for women, as China has intensified a security crackdown in recent years.
Bekri, an Uighur himself, accused the militants of ignoring the region’s own traditions and of wanting to enforce a strict theocratic society.
“They … push the banning of watching television, listen to the radio, reading newspapers, singing and dancing, not allowing laughter at weddings nor crying at funerals,” he added. “They force men to grow beards and women to wear the burkha.”
A hadith has Muhammad saying: “A dead person is punished by his relatives weeping over him” (Bukhari 28.1226).
In another hadith, Muhammad is said to have “ordered the moustache to be trimmed and the beard to be left.” (Muwatta Malik 51.1.1)
And in yet another hadith, Muhammad is depicted as saying that “when a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it does not suit her that she displays her parts of body except this and this, and he pointed to her face and hands.” (Abu Dawud 32.4092)
Extremists are also demanding that not only food, but also cosmetics, medicine and clothing be halal, and push the idea that government-subsidised housing is not halal and to be avoided, Bekri wrote.
“Resolutely eliminate the tumour of religious extremism,” he added.

Such great insight
I hope he kicks some Islamist butt Jackie Chan style.
Defcon 4 says
Nur Bekri is, in all probability, a scuzzlum himself. He could merely be lying to appease his masters in Beijing.
Jay Boo says
Relax
He looks too much like a happy go lucky Jackie Chan to be a scuzzlum.
umbra says
1. he is towing the Beijing line. If not, he will be out of a job, plus the potential loss of earnings from corruption.
2. he probably is an uyghur. The CPC puppet type, perhaps plied with bribes.
Kepha says
Umbra, as a Communist Party member, Nur Bekri can’t be a Muslim, unless it’s in a highly secret manner. He needs to formally profess the Dialectical Materialist creed.
Alarmed Pig Farmer says
Man, there sure are a lot of extremists, even in Communist China. And these extremists never get opposition from their respective Moslem populations. Why is that? Is it that there are so many extremists among the good guys that it’s not really a hijacking tiny minority scenario so much as it’s one with a implementing gargantuan majority?
Dubya, ya lied to us. But at least you have ignorance and obfuscation to claim you’re not a liar, unlike your successor, who definitely is without possible credible dispute.
Mazo says
Gotta love how the media and JW love obfusticating on Islam in China, ignoring the fact that the fanatically devout and religious Hui, Salar, and Dongxiang of northwest China are much more religious and pious in Islam than the Uyghurs and live a much more Islamic lifestyle, while they commit zero terrorist attacks and have no seperatist intent.
While the less religious Uyghurs are suffering from taking drugs (in violation of their own religion, religious Hui people don’t suffer from major drug abuse unlike the Uyghur) and even some desperately poor Uyghurs sell their own kids to human trafficking gangs who take then to eastern China to become pickpockets (which religious Hui Muslims would never do), and its these Uyghurs who commit terrorist attacks.
Many Uyghurs are suffering from poverty, drug abuse, and lack of education.
In the Hui region of Ningxia, the Communist Party even promotes fashion shows promoting the Hijab and encourages Arab investment in Hui areas, and promotes the local Hui Islamic instutitions and the Hui don’t suffer from terrorism. Islam is now promoted and flourishingin Hui areas after Deng Xiaoping ended Mao era policies.
http://www.scmp.com/article/512501/faith-flourishes-arid-wasteland
Wile less religious Uyghurs, getting cut off from any positive reinforcement from the local religious authorities, easily receive influence from terrorist idealogues and commit terrorist attacks.
Wellington says
So, by your reasoning, the “less religious Uyghurs” are committing terrorism because they’re not Islamic enough, that it’s a shame that they don’t get “positive reinforcement from the local religious authorities.”
Good God, man, look at the world at large and NOTICE that, generally speaking, the more devout the Muslim the more likely they are to commit violence in the name of their religion or at least approve of it when done by fellow believers. Violence and intolerance from Muslims worldwide is directly proportional to how Islamically devout they are. Or do you deny this?
Alarmed Pig Farmer says
No, he’s trying to show that more Islam doesn’t = more violence, thus snipping the 1,400 direct link between the two. Then again, the fact that the Hui are basically Han in culture except for their Moslem defacement, and the Uighur are not, maybe that has something to do with their relative non-violence.
I wonder how the Hui justify all that terror in the Holy Ko-Ran and Hah-Death? Have they figured out Islam, how to make it civilized, or are they just laying low of necessity awaiting the day of liberation when Sharia finally pulls up at the curb?
Wellington says
Agreed, APF. To the extent that the Hui are less violent than the Uighurs, it can only be in spite of Islam and not because of it.
Kepha says
Well, I don’t know about your part of China, Mazo, but I’ve heard from others that the devout Hui have pipelines for opiates that run from the Golden Triangle regions o f Burma and Thailand through Yunnan and on up to Qinghai. Heard it from a Han Christian from Qinghai who had a low view of the Hui for just that reason (and I by no means share his prejudice against all Hui).
As for Nur Bekri (an Uighur, judging by his name), I wouldn’t look to a Communist official for enlightenment on any facet of any non-Marxist-Leninist religion.
Mazo says
Kepha, you don’t seem to understand what I’m saying.
Nowhere did I say that the Hui didn’t deal in drugs (selling it to other people). I said, they don’t take the drugs themselves (inject or smoke them, while the Uyghurs on the other hand are suffering from a massive drug abuse problem, shooting up heroin on themselves.
Some of the heroin that the Uyghurs inject into themselves is indeed sold to them by devoutly practicing Hui drug dealers.
During the ROC period, many religious Hui were opium dealers and sold it to others, yet they never abused the opium themselves.
Many Uyghurs on the other hand have no such compunction about shooting heroin into their own body. This is also why AIDS is spreading among Uyghurs because of infected needles.
mortimer says
Clearly, POLITICIANS CANNOT CREATE TRUTH, but merely mislead the gullible who are too lazy to CHECK THE FACTS.
The role of journalists is to expose such PREVARICATION and help the public discern the truth so they may make an INFORMED DEMOCRATIC CHOICE.
Why are the politicians of all countries lying to the people about the dangers of jihad? Are these politicians simpletons? Is Cameron a simpleton? Is Obama a simpleton? Is Nur Bekri a simpleton?
And by the way, there is no ‘blasphemy’ in Islam, only ‘kufr’ which is better translated ‘wrong worshiping’ or ‘wrong thinking’ or ‘forbidden thought’. Because there is no critical thought in Islam, blasphemy is not an Islamic concept.
Strictly speaking, Nur Bekri’s first name is both ‘kufr’ and blasphemy, since it suggests Mohammed has the divine characteristics of omniscience and omnipresence and therefore that Mohammed is a divine partner of Allah.
Alarmed Pig Farmer says
Why are the politicians of all countries lying to the people about the dangers of jihad?
Willful ignorance impelled by wishful thinking. Delusion impelled by the fake facts of the fictive reality that has been built around Islam. Infidel populations who take the divide-by-two method of deciding on a version of probable reality from the counter claims in the public discourse.
Oh, and outright lying (to wit: Benghazi).
PJG says
“…many have begun adopting practices more commonly seen in Saudi Arabia or Pakistan, such as full-face veils for women, as China has intensified a security crackdown in recent years.”
Would it not be the other way round? That the introduced practices, along with the general trouble-making which comes with them, have been a catalyst for the security crackdown?
dumbledoresarmy says
I saw that, too: that there has been an increase in the use of the Slave Mask.
A *very* bad sign, that.
I don’t necessarily trust Tawfiq Hamid, who presents himself as a moderate non-jihad Muslim; but I still think he said something very useful when he warned, some time ago, that there is a correlation between the degree of coveredupness of muslim women and the degree of jihadmindedness among their menfolk. In other words: the more face-masked women you see scuttling about , the more likely it is that the menfolk associated with those women are hatching mass-murderous jihad plots.

Above, the sand-thrower extraordinaire, mazo, who is always going on about how wonderful and nice the Hui are, wrote:
“Nowhere did I say that the Hui didn’t deal in drugs (selling it to other people).
“I said, they don’t take the drugs themselves (inject or smoke them, while the Uyghurs on the other hand are suffering from a massive drug abuse problem, shooting up heroin on themselves.
“Some of the heroin that the Uyghurs inject into themselves is indeed sold to them by devoutly practicing Hui drug dealers.
[So: pious (and yet in many previous postings mazo has tried to make out that Hui are totally Sinified and MINO to the nth degree) Mohammedan Hui sell deadly psychoactive drugs to somewhat-less-mohammedan Uighur. Lovely. And they’ve been doing this *at least* since the 1920s? – dda]
“During the ROC period, many religious Hui were opium dealers and sold it to others, yet they never abused the opium themselves.”
And this is supposed to make us think better of the Hui?????
In *my* book the drug-pusher who makes a lot of money selling addictive drugs to others, whilst not using said drugs himself, is a more vile character – more thoroughly evil – than the addicts on whom he battens and fattens even whilst he despises, manipulates and looks down on them.
I will add, incidentally, that the Taliban in Afghanistan make a lot of money from illicit drugs – heroin. And that the *first* thing that Lebanese Muslims did, when they got into Australia in large numbers, was to enthusiastically engage, in large numbers, in the practice of illegal drug importation, manufacturing and dealing. Isn’t that strange, that those allegedly-MINO Hui and the (often allegedly-MINO) Muslims from Lebanon should *both* be up to their necks in the illegal drug trade?? Almost seems like something about Islam inclines people toward engaging in this sort of sh*t behaviour.
Mazo says
Voldemort’s army should really look at her history as to who introduced the virulent Indian form of the Opium plant to China and who invented heroin. If you guessed westerners, you are correct.
The reason so many Hui started in the opium trafficking in the 1920s in northwestern China and in Yunnan is because a massive amount of Hui (and Salar and Dongxiang Muslims) were army officers in the Qing dynasty and then the Republic of China military.
Opium trafficking was used by many Chinese warlords and the central Republic of China government under Chiang Kai-shek himself, in order to fund the military since opium was the only stable commodity (thanks to the west) that China could nationalize and produce by itself with a sustainable market. Chiang Kai-shek used his connections with Shanghai gangsters in order to traffick opium to sustain his military.
Since the entire northwest region (Ningxia, Gansu, Qinghai) were dominated by Hui, Salar, and Dongxiang army officers and warlords and all three of them have a historical habit of heavy military enlistment, many of them gained experience in opium trafficking during this time.
The revenue from opium trafficking was used to fight in the Chinese civil wars in the 1930s and also against Tibet and the Japanese. Hui General Ma Bufang fought and defeated the Dalai Lama’s Tibetan forces in 1932, with his own army of Hui, Salar, Han, and loyalist Tibetans from Amdo.
Hui Generals Ma Bufang, Ma Buqing and Ma Hongbin sent divisions of Hui, Salar, Dongxiang, Tibetans and Han to fight the Japanese again in WW2.
They also fought for the Republic of China government against the Communists, and many Hui Generals like Ma Buqing and Ma Chengxiang fled to Taiwan and took with them all their gold and revenue from whatever activities they did on the mainland. The same with the entire treasury of the Republic of China itself when it was moved to Taiwan, the central government made alot of money from opium revenue, the Republic of China was fighting the Civil War and against the Japanese on drug revenue.
In Yunnan, the Republic of China sent agents from Taiwan to coordinate former Republic of China military personnel, including Hui, to fight an insurgency against the Communists. They were funded by revenue from the heroin trade in the Golden Triangle region and many of these ROC troops had contacts and were supplied by the local Heroin dealers, which is why many Hui in that region and also experienced in the drug trade.
I never said anything about Sinified= less religious, I consistently said that Hui, Salar and Dongxiang in China are much more religious than the Uyghur, and don’t commit any terrorist attacks and never joined any seperatist groups. Notice the correlation I implied.
Mazo says
Because of their greater religiousity and faith, Hui villages, houses, and Qingzhen (Halal) food are much cleaner than that of their neighbors in China, Taiwan, and mostly evewhere where they live. Non-Muslims often eat at Qingzhen restaurants because their own restaurants are filthy and breeding grounds for all sorts of germs because of no rules on hygiene.
Han and Uyghur are similar to each other in that both poor Uyghurs and
Han sell their children to human trafficker, and they both sell and take drugs. There are Uyghur who engage in drug trafficking too by selling heroin and cannabis, but that doesn’t stop their own people from using HIV infected needles from injecting the drugs into their own body while no such problem exists among Hui.
dumbledoresarmy says
Observe that mazo is now pushing the “muslims clean [= halal]/ pure” and “non-Muslims dirty/ haram/ impure” dichotomy.
Funny, that.
Also observe the “blame the infidels” meme (though so far as I can see, nobody *forced* the Hui drug dealers to jump on the opium bandwagon or, later on, the heroin bandwagon! they *chose* to do it) and a huge heaping serve of whataboutery/ tu quoque, attempting to get the Hui drug dealers off the hook by saying ‘but infidels do it too!”
Hui are Muslims. Bottom line. They haven’t apostasised.
Muslims lie. They lie, lie, lie, lie, lie. Their damnable cult encourages them to lie and deceive, whether to harm the infidels directly, or in order to protect themselves and their grand Total World Domination project from hostile infidel scrutiny and self-defensive action, at times and in places where the surrounding Infidels are just a bit too strong to be attacked and destroyed.
Therefore I. cannot. and. do. not. trust. Muslims, which means that I don’t trust goodcop Hui Muslims any more than I trust badcop Uighur Muslims…or Malay Muslims or any other kind of Muslim on planet earth right now.
And no amount of special pleading by mazo on behalf of the Hui MUSLIMS – or, for that matter, on behalf of Muslims in southern thailand or southern Philippines or anywhere else – is gonna shift that.
Mazo says
Western imperialism destroyed China’s economy and kept in such a state that the military and most other government administration including education could only be funded by opium revenue. This is the fault of the imperialists and not the victims.
According to VA, there must be a massive conspiracy consisting of magic and telepaths in order to pull off this “goodcop” “badcop” game, since Tibetan Muslims have a consistent habit of siding with Tibetan Buddhists.
http://www.jihadwatch.org/2014/04/china-buddhist-monks-training-to-defend-against-jihad-terror-attacks/comment-page-1#comment-1033832
And some telepath must be in control of all the Hui, Salar, and Dongxiang, telling them to play “goodcop”.
dumbledoresarmy says
Note also that mazo feels it necessary to refer to me by twisting and distorting my nom de plume – by the use of turnspeak/ reversal of reality – into a form that he presumably hopes will cause me both offence and/ or distress.
In so doing, all he does is reveal his *own* face: the face of Islam.
In calling me ‘voldemortsarmy’ he is doing exactly what other Muslims do when they slander the Jews of Israel by equating them with Nazis.
This sort of thing is both evil and also unbelievably petty.
Mazo says
Lol anyone who doesn’t believe me can ask Kepha about hygiene and the reputation of Hui restaurants in China and Taiwan compared to other restaurants there. He said he has eaten there so he would know.
I have not talked about the religious aspects of “clean” and “impure”, here, I am talking about simple hygiene and the safety of the food actually serve in the restaurants.
Will Doohan says
Mazo, it doesn’t matter if some communities of Muslims are peaceful and some are violent. It doesn’t change the fact that the underlying philosophy advocates violent territorial expansion, violence towards those who are not Muslims, and the subjugation of non-muslims under Sharia once they are in control. …
It also doesn’t matter if you disagree with this. The words and actions of Muslims all around the world for the past 1,400 years, right up to today, prove the truth of this.
