Boko Haram’s real name is the Party of the People of the Sunnah for Dawah and Jihad. In other words, it explains and justifies its activities specifically by reference to Islamic doctrine. Its name Boko Haram means “Western education is sin,” or “Books bad,” and stems from the idea that a Western education is a sinful departure from an Islamic education, which centers on the Qur’an and Sunnah, not on technology or science or higher math and certainly not on literature. And so, since Islamic law mandates death for apostates and heretics, Boko Haram murders teachers who dare to teach such things.
“Boko Haram kills Eight Teachers in Borno School,” from This Day Live, April 11 (thanks to King Dave):
The outlawed Boko Haram sect launched attacks on troubled Borno town Thursday killing 8 teachers
The sect in the latest attacks on Thursday evening invaded three towns of Borno; Dikwa (in the central), Gwoza and Kalahgde (both in South).
In the attack on yet to be identified school in Dikwa, some residents of the town who fled to Maiduguri revealed to journalists that the hoodlums killed eight teachers.
One of them who spoke on condition of anonymity said some had to flee the town to Maiduguri.
“We could not sleep at night as all we were hearing was gunshot and we became afraid and had to sneak in the dark for Maiduguri.”
