“Jihadists”? Expect Obama to get a strongly-worded letter from CIA chief John Brennan, who said in 2010 that jihadists were not jihadists: “They are not jihadists, for jihad is a holy struggle, an effort to purify for a legitimate purpose, and there is nothing — absolutely nothing — holy or pure or legitimate or Islamic about murdering innocent men, women and children.”
Anyway, the incoherence of Barack Obama is breathtaking. Last year he wanted to invade Syria on the side of the “jihadists” he is now saying must be stopped. He has given weapons to groups in Syria that he claimed were “moderate” but which actually were collaborating with these jihadists: the Long War Journal reported on June 29, 2013 that the Al Nusrah Front for the People of the Levant, which is “al Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria,” has “cooperated with Free Syrian Army units to establish sharia, or Islamic law, in Aleppo and in eastern Syria.” What is the Free Syrian Army? The “moderates” whom we are training and to whom we are giving weapons: “the US government is backing the Free Syrian Army despite the group’s known ties to the Al Nusrah Front.”
So apparently it’s all right for the group the U.S. backs to establish Islamic law in Aleppo, but not all right for a similar group to establish Islamic law in Mosul.
Michael Johnson says
looks like Obama might be finally coming around, or at least starting to… ISIS’s main goal is ISLAMIC state across Syria and Iraq. Noway to hide Islamist motivations. I sense a lot of contempt by people in US for helping Iraq. Doing nothing would be a mistake, it’s time to step up
EYESOPEN says
No it’s not! It’s just another way of wasting taxpayer money this country does NOT have, as well as wasting the lives of good military men, particularly under Obama’s “rules of engagement” that have already hampered our military. I’m surprised you haven’t caught wise to this by now. We need no more to do with the izlamic rat-holes in the ME.
ObamatheFraud says
Not going to happen, what ever he does will not be enough to stop this madness in the Middle East. There are more than 170,000 missiles aimed at Israel right now and many more being stockpiled. The best shield in the world cannot stop this kind of arms buildup. Israel will have to act alone and quickly before these folks take over Syria and Iraq. Iran is winning this contest.

The short and the long of it is that Obama is a fool, whether complicit with the malevolence which is Islam or not. If complicit, a fool. If not complicit, might as well be since his policies have had the same effect.

Wellington, this is one of the very few times I differ with you—I believe that if Obama is *not* deliberately complicit with Islam then he is a fool, given how his actions have emboldened Jihadists—whereas if he is complicit then he is something *considerably worse* than a fool.

on this issue , Obama is right. Why waste American men in defending Iraq ?
Why can’t the Iraqis do it themselves ? They have second largest oil wealth and did they even pay for the $1500 Billion in American tax money that went into bringing democracy to iraq ? Nah, they abuse Americans and support Iran.
America should offer weapons and training ONLY if iraq pays for it.

No weapons! NO training! Haven’t we sent enough arms to our enemies that want to kill us? Want to train them how to do it better? Have we learned NOTHING from our weapons and training we gave to muzzies back in Afghanistan back in the 80s, just to “get back” at the Soviet Union for Vietnam? How did that work out for us?
NO! Absolutely f…ing NOT!

I don’t believe his words (obama).
“So apparently it’s all right for the group the U.S. backs to establish Islamic law in Aleppo, but not all right for a similar group to establish Islamic law in Mosul.”
For this “similar group” to take control of Mosul – this is too much for the people of the west (especially Americans) to accept – and Obama knows it. He was put on the spot.
I don’t believe anything he says.
Time will tell.

This problem started ten years ago.
After the US invasion, they should have broken Iraq into three autonomous regions/nations. Kurd, Shia, Sunni. Then there would have been a modicum of peace in Iraq.
But the US and UK could not do that, because the mantra at home was that multiculturalism was the holy grail of culture, to be nurtured and cherished. So they condemned Iraq to a spiral of hatred, terror and decline because of their flawed social idealism.
You WILL love each other. Ve haf veys of making you love each other.
.
To bad none of these brain-dead idealists have read any history. Had they done so, they would have realised that Britain deliberately forced three peoples into one unstable union, to their great advantage. You can only rule an unruly place, like Iraq, if the people are too busy fighting each other to notice they are not in charge.
Divide and rule.
How has it got to the stage where the Victorians and Georgians understood society, and used it to their advantage. While modern politicians know nothing about culture and society and live in an idealistic fantasy-land?
Madness.

Over 50,000 American trained Iraqi soldiers, armed to the teeth with American armor and helicopter gunships, ran like rabbits from an estimated 10,000 Jihadists armed with assault rifles and some truck mounted machine guns.
Now the Jihadists have all that heavy weaponry and, evil as they are, they are not cowards but will stand and fight to the death. Anyone who says Americans should go back there can suit up, buy an airplane ticket and lead the charge.
Iraq is lost. It is not one country but 3 countries inhabited by people who have hated one another for millenia. Its very existence since WWI was a map drawing mistake. Bush erred in letting people with no experience in democracy draft a constitution that enshrined Islamist ideals. Same mistake as in Afghanistan.
Iraq’s collapse is a prelude to the debacle looming in Afghanistan. In both cases, our only option is to let these primitive savages sort it out and deal with whomever comes out on top. Their ideology and culture has no place in the 21st or even the 20th century. It is time to contain and quarantine; nation building was a fantasy, just like multi-culturalism.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt and a hat! Desert Shield lasted about 1-2 years. Desert Storm was a couple months. Lost 100 in the war. We lost about 5,000 in the peace!
The war went well because we had a ramp-up of about two years. To go back now would be the equilavent of 1944 invasion of europe. From flight to field. Expect heavy casualties. No surplus of M1’s, M109’s or MRL’s with all the ammo you can shoot. No stockpiles of food, water and fuel to burn.
We tried. They wanted us out. They got what they wanted. God bless-em!
Besides, with all the captured US material and funding from us and other places, we will be dealing with a well equipped army that wants only to fight and die.

No longer can the left label RS (or the British govt) as an Islamaphobe for using the term Jihadi, for the darling of the left has now used it himself.
We’ve seen a few cracks in the left over the last few months regarding criticism of islam – 1st it was the protests about Brunei’s Sharia implementation, then the Boko Haram schoolgirl kidnapping, now the use of the term jihadis by Obama when Obama and Kerry have been supporting jihadis for the last few years.
Regardless of Obama’s many errors in the past (and I’m sure they’ll be many more in future), this statement should generate positive feedback to all Democrat elected representatives that their C-in-C has, in this case, done the right thing in calling out the enemy for what it is – and not using the usual spin of extremists that are misinterpreting the Koran.

Obama: U.S. must stop “jihadists” in Iraq and Syria, and finance and train military forces from other countries to fight them
………………………………
Yes—Obama’s actually suing the “J-word” was stunning—but don’t worry, he backtracked almost immediately, saying that the US would do nothing until Iraq worked out its own differences.
I suppose they think you can negotiate with Jihadists who are lining the streets of their captured cities with decapitated heads, as ISIS has done in Mosul.
And why not? Right now, we are “negotiating” with the equally sanguinary Taliban…
Robert Wagner says
Obama is doing the right thing for the wrong reason. ISIS is Sunni and Iran is Shiite.
Bitter enemies. Isn’t it great that two of the world’s greatest dangers are now at each others throat? With a militant Sunni regime at Iran’s front door, I believe that they will have to be more concerned with their own house that with the USA and Israel.

The *only* intervention that any non-Muslim country – and in a sane world, the USA and Russia would be doing this together – should undertake, in Iraq and Syria, right now, is this:
1/ Go in and establish a heavily-guarded rallying-point/ gateway or gateways.
2/ As quickly as possibly, gather up *all* the remaining Christians (together with as much of their historic manuscripts and moveable historic artworks, valuables, etc, as can be gathered up along with them). Use Canon Andrew White and assorted people from Barnabas Fund to check the “flock” to weed out any mohammedans masquerading in sheep’s clothing.
3/ Get all of the Christians and their moveables out through a guarded gateway to safety in the majority-Christian countries of the wider world – everybody takes some, nobody has to take all, easy enough to spread the burden of taking in virtually-destitute people. If Israel did it for the Jews of Iraq, Yemen, Ethiopia and a lot of other places back in the day, surely we of the countries of former Christendom can do no less for *our* persecuted and suffering and threatened-with-genocide brethren.
4/ Once we’ve gotten all the Christians out…LEAVE, slamming and locking the gates tight shut behind us.
