Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Raymond Ibrahim: The Muslim Brotherhood ‘Retaliates’ with Rape

Jun 19, 2014 8:50 am By Raymond Ibrahim

Muslim Brotherhood sympathizers recently went on a sexual assault and rape spree in Egypt as a way of “getting even” with those women who dared to celebrate the presidential victory of Abdel Fatteh al-Sisi—the former army chief who overthrew Muslim Brotherhood rule in Egypt.

On June 8, when tens of thousands of Egyptians congregated in Tahrir Square to celebrate Sisi’s inauguration, dozens of women were sexually assaulted and many more harassed. According to a statement later released by the Ministry of Interior, seven men between the ages of 15 and 49 were arrested for sexually assaulting “a number of women.”

One 19-year-old female student was especially brutalized—and videotaped as she was stripped naked and sexually assaulted by a throng of men. (I saw the graphic video on YouTube, though it has since been removed; a much less graphic clip of the initial assault appears here.) A gun-waving police officer eventually managed to rescue the woman from her ordeal, though after sustaining injuries himself.

Sexually harassing or raping those supportive of Sisi by way of “retribution” is not uncommon in Egypt. Earlier, a six-year-old boy was raped by a Muslim Brotherhood member who was “angered” at the child for singing praises to Sisi. He lured the boy into a shed, locked the doors, and proceeded to rape him, while saying, “You’re always holding pictures of this Sisi and singing his praises.  Come, I’ll humiliate and break you—and your Sisi.”

Although Western media never specify who is behind these sexual assaults—often citing “the mob”—Hala Sarhan, a popular TV host in Egypt alluded to the ultimate source that legitimizes sexual harassment and rape in Egypt, namely, Islamist preachers and leaders:

What was said to these people [rapists] to brainwash them into think that such violations on the person and body of this young girl [the aforementioned rape victim] were permissible? … I’ll tell you. The one in parliament who said this, is the same as the man who did that… And the one who told that girl that she is an infidel, is the same as the one in parliament who said that it’s permissible to marry a 9-year-old girl [based on the prophet of Islam’s example when he married the girl-child Aisha].   The ones who in the mosques told him that they [women] are in the pits of hell and the lures of Satan—adulteresses, that Satan lives in their bodies… This is what they tell them in the mosques! And they’re so upset now [Islamist preachers] because they can no longer continue to preach like this in the mosques! We thank you minister of religious endowments for stopping this mockery! [The new Egyptian government has cracked down on radical preachers.] Before [under Morsi], every guy that yelled and stomped got himself a pulpit to preach such thoughts into the minds of the youth—and then they went out thinking they are doing jihad. You see, they have this thing in their mind that says “If we curse or attack an infidel, that is jihad”…. Concerning the previous cases of sexual harassment, they [Islamist authorities] told people, “Why did she [any violated woman] leave her house in the first place? She deserves what she got!” They told them, “Your sister needs to be circumcised”; told them, “In the house, beat her and discipline her, break her bones; and if she refuses to have sex with you, saying she’s tired or sick, curse her with the angels till the sun rises.” We allowed these people to fill their minds with such ideas!

Such honesty is reminiscent of an Egyptian op-ed that appeared after a young Coptic woman was murdered by a pro-Brotherhood mob because they identified her as a Christian:

Those who killed the young and vulnerable Mary Sameh George, for hanging a cross in her car, are not criminals, but rather wretches who follow those who legalized for them murder, lynching, dismemberment, and the stripping bare of young Christian girls—without every saying “kill.”  [Islamic cleric] Yassir Burhami and his colleagues who announce their hate for Christians throughout satellite channels and in mosques—claiming that hatred of Christians is synonymous with love for Allah—they are the true killers who need to be tried and prosecuted.

At any rate, using sexual harassment and rape to force people to comply with Islamist agendas has a long history, especially in Egypt. In 2011, during the “Arab Spring,” when the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists were released from prison, legitimized and eventually rose to power, sexual harassment skyrocketed, as one graph showed.  Moreover, UN research done in 2013, when Morsi was president, suggested that 99.3% of Egyptian women had experienced sexual harassment.

Indeed, in February, 2013, hundreds of Egyptian women took to the streets of Tahrir Square to protest this nonstop harassment.  They held slogans like “Silence is unacceptable, my anger will be heard,” and “A safe square for all; Down with sexual harassment.” “Marchers also shouted chants against President Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood group from which he hails,” wrote Al Ahram Online.

The response was more sexual harassment and rapes. One woman was gang-raped for approximately 20 minutes and nearly died. And as Hala Sarhan pointed out, elements from the then Islamist-heavy government under Morsi blamed the women themselves, saying that:

women taking part in protests bear the responsibility of being sexually harassed, [and] describing what happens in some demonstrators’ tents as “prostitution.” Major General Adel Afify, member of the committee representing the Salafi Asala Party, criticized female protesters, saying that they “know they are among thugs. They should protect themselves before requesting that the Interior Ministry does so. By getting herself involved in such circumstances, the woman has 100 percent responsibility.”

Likewise, popular Salafi preacher Abu Islam sarcastically blamed the victims:

“They tell you women are a red line. They tell you that naked women [i.e., not wearing veils or hijabs]—who are going to Tahrir Square because they want to be raped—are a red line! And they ask Morsi and the Brotherhood to leave power!”  Abu Islam added that these women activists are going to Tahrir Square not to protest but to be sexually abused because they had wanted to be raped.  “They have no shame, no fear and not even feminism. Practice your feminism, sheikha! It is a legitimate right for you to be a woman,” he said. “And by the way, 90 percent of them are crusaders [i.e. Christian Copts] and the remaining 10 percent are widows who have no one to control them. You see women talking like monsters,” he added.

The only silver lining in this cloud of Islamist rape that hovers over Egypt is that the differences between Morsi and his Brotherhood government, and Sisi and the post-Brotherhood government, are already apparent. In response to the endemic sexual harassment in Egypt, the new government

passed a law criminalizing all forms of sexual harassment…A new article, which has been issued into power, adds a harsh punishment to those found guilty of unwanted sexual contact…. Other amended laws, under article 306, declare that those found guilty of verbal sexual harassment in a private or public place will be sentenced to a minimum of six months in prison and fined no less than EGP 3,000 ($US 420).

When I recently asked some analyst colleagues in Egypt if Morsi ever took any such measures against sexual harassment, the quip I received most was along the lines of “Take measures? He was the one ordering sexual harassment against his female critics.”

Still, and in keeping with Western MSM journalism, Sisi, who at least appears to be trying to take some measures against sexual harassment, is now being portrayed by the Guardian in a cynical light—while Morsi who did nothing and whose Islamist allies were responsible for inciting violence against women got a free pass—just like the New York Times recently tried to blame Sisi for the plight of Egypt’s religious minorities, without mentioning that it was often Morsi and the Islamists who put them there in the first place.

Raping and abusing women as a form of fun and punishment, is really hard work, done by men who really don”t want to do it. They would much rather be at the library, but duty calls, so they man up and perform the best they can. They hate every second of it, but it must be done…

It is exactly the same thing.

Each Muslim rapist has a scripted role in the rape

It is very similar to a Muslim prayer with its choreographed movements and words.
Muslim prayer is nothing but rape training in ritual disguise.

The above article has very little to do with the Muslim Brotherhood retaliating, but more to do with the sick mentality of Egyptian men.

This was going on long before Hosni Mubarak was swept from power by a wave of mass demonstrations across the country. The end of that repressive regime, however, did not herald an end to the problems that had plagued Egyptian society – among them widespread sexual harassment and assault. For years, women in Egypt had endured pervasive street harassment ranging from catcalls and groping to mass sexual attacks.

Strangely way back in october 2006 Mr Spencer, while writing numerous article about the Australian “cat meat sheikh” he missed the Eid al Fitri rape rampage where as reported by the Wael Abbas blog, a mob of men terrorized women in Cairo

“It was the first day of Eid, and a new film was opening downtown. Mobs of males gatherd trying to get in, but when the show was sold out, they decided they will destroy the box office. After accomplishing that, they went on what can only be described as a sexual frenxy: They ran around grabbing any and every girl in sight, whether a niqabi, a Hijabi or uncoverd. Whether egyptian or foreigner. Even pregnant ones. They grabbed them, molested them, tried to rip their cloths off and rape them, all in front of the police, who didn’t do shit. The good people of downtown tried their best to protect the girls. Shop owners would let the girls in and lock the doors, while the mobs tried to break in. Taxi drivers put the girls in the cars while the mobs were trying to break the glass and grab the girls out. It was a disgusting pandamonium of sexual assaults that lasted for 5 houres from 7:30 PM to 12:30 am, and it truns my stomach just to think about it.

Were the Muslim Brotherhood involved with the rape of Laura Logan

Then in 2011 women where attacked, not by Muslim Brotherhood but :-

At a Tahrir Square protest on March 9, 2011, a group of female protestors were arrested, beaten, given electric shocks, and strip-searched while being photographed by soldiers.[23] Seven women were threatened with prostitution charges and made to submit to “virginity tests” during which a doctor examined their hymens while soldiers watched and laughed.

In December 2011, a widely-circulated image of a woman brutally beaten and stripped to the point that her bra was exposed by soldiers, not by Muslim Brotherhood

    https://tavaana.org/en/content/taking-back-egypts-streets-harassmap-campaign-end-sexual-harassment#_ednref17

Mr Ibrahim wants us to believe that sexual harassment and assaults sexual harassment skyrocketed in 2011, then links to an arabic page of the “HarassmentMap” site and to a 2013 report.

Yet according to a 2008 ECWR (Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights, 98% of foreign women and 83% of Egyptian women have been sexually harassed. Half of women experience harassment on a daily basis, and women are especially vulnerable to sexual attack in mass holiday gatherings and political protests.

Mr Ibrahim without proof is claiming that the MB is retaliating with rape, when in reality, rape as a tool of repression is nothing new in Egypt.

One only have to google Black Wednesday May 25 2005

” Despite the huge propaganda and use of all the resources of the state to support the play of the referendum, tens of young men and women worried the security forces and the ruling party to the extent that they decided to use more oppressive methods. They used a new security approach against the young women and men participating in the demonstration that caused the psychological feeling of defeat. The physical and sexual attacks targeted all people who protested or tried to protest against the fake referendum conducted by the state. All demonstrators were targeted, with a special focus on women and girls who were sexually harassed.
The militias of the National Democratic Party practiced before the eyes of all security forces the severe oppression from the very first moment of the attack on the demonstrators. The security forces – at the beginning – intentionally surrounded the demonstrators, severely pressured them while their back was against the wall, then split them – violently – into small separated groups.
Members of the security forces promptly dealt with the demonstrators in these small groups by direct orders of the officers who pushed them to cruelly beat the demonstrators and to sexually harass the women and girls. The orders of officers included verbal abuse that can provoke every free person. The security forces sought to kidnap prominent figures – of both sexes – from the demonstration, took them to the side streets to beat them, and then made them disappear in the buses of deportation, or in near police stations.
Security forces used the soldiers of the Egyptian central security forces who came out in civilian clothes, concentrated on the sexual harassment of women and girls by violently harassing their bodies, tearing their clothes, and removing the veil of veiled women, in addition to dragging them on the ground by their hairs; as for women or girls who tried to escape, they followed them and incited thugs to surround them to fulfil what they had begun. The women who could stop a taxi were forced out after they had horrified the driver to fulfil what they had begun. If they resorted to a shop or a residential building, they were surrounding it and breaking through with direct orders from the officers.
The message that the police and the former regime wanted to deliver at that time was that sexual harassment is the destiny for women who will participate in reform and requests of democracy.”

      • Semeru says

        To answer your question

        Yes

What is happening in Egypt can be split into two categories

#1 Rape and Sexual harassment used as a weapon, here I can name at least two non muslim countries, Burma and Congo.

#2 The incidents that occurred during Eid al Fitra can be best described as “wilding”. One infamous incident being the Central Park Rampage, New York, Where over fifty women reported being harassed or assaulted, among them was a trio of British teenagers who were sitting on a fence in the park when a group of men began groping them. One of the teenagers was forcibly separated from her group, stripped, and raped. After a brief respite, a second group of men came upon her and assaulted and robbed her.

So can you answer me, if what we see in Egypt is an islamic thing, why are we not seeing it else where in the islamic world ?

Mr Ibrahim is being very deceptive in putting all the blame onto the muslim brotherhood

He is using quotes from Safalists, Yasser al-Burhami and Abu Islam, also he writes

And as Hala Sarhan pointed out, elements from the then Islamist-heavy government under Morsi blamed the women themselves,

And as Hala Sarhan pointed out, elements from the then Islamist-heavy government under Morsi blamed the women themselves, saying that:

women taking part in protests bear the responsibility of being sexually harassed, [and] describing what happens in some demonstrators’ tents as “prostitution.”

Ibrahim also give a link to Shura Council’s human rights committee

        http://www.egyptindependent.com/news/shura-council-committee-says-female-protesters-should-take-responsibility-if-harassed

As we see, it is again quotes made by safalist

Major General Adel Afify, member of the committee representing the Salafi Asala Party, criticized female protesters, saying that they “know they are among thugs. They should protect themselves before requesting that the Interior Ministry does so. By getting herself involved in such circumstances, the woman has 100 percent responsibility.”

        Also

Salah Abdel Salam, a member representing the Salafi Nour Party, said that as long as women protest in places full of thugs, they should take responsibility for the harassment they face.

The Muslim Brotherhood and the Safalist parties are not the same.

When, oh when will women in these barbaric lands take the example of the Jewish woman – after her father and husband were killed by Moha and his gang – she severed Moha and his ilk some poisoned sheep. AND THE FOOLS ATE IT! They could taste the poison, but Moha, in his arrogance, believed the sheep’s foreleg would tell him it was poisoned. So one of his followers died from the poison, knowing it was poisoned and watched Moha eat it. Moha died later, believing from this horrible pain of the poison that ‘his aorta was severed” (see Dr. David Wood, ACTS 17, answeringmuslims.org (or .com, I think) and check out his ‘Death of Moha” video. Above, a Defender of Islam attacks Raymond Ibrahim.

Its long posting involves a massive dollop of tu quoque, amongst other things.

There is violence against women, and rape, in non-Islamic societies; in some much more so than in others. Rape has always accompanied warfare, to greater or lesser degree; it is, therefore, prevalent in the DRC and Burma, where there is in the one case an ongoing tribal war, and in the other, a war of the dominant majority against certain ethnic minorities (the Karen, for example). If those wars are resolved, I expect that the incidence of rape will level off.

But that does not absolve Islam: because Islam is *fundamentally* about war, it is a religion of war. Rape goes with war; Islam commands that dar al Islam must wage perpetual war upon dar al harb, and that war has *always* involved, among other things, murderous raids that seized female captives – in certain cases, in very large numbers indeed – to be raped by their Muslim captors; therefore, rape is very, very closely linked to Islam, so much so that I think it could well be called a religion of rape, precisely because it is a religion of war. In a sense, women *within* Islam – both feared and exploited – are the Infidel within; they are treated almost like a conquered and captive enemy. Because so many of them *were* – and in not a few places still are – the women of the enemy, who had been kidnapped, abused, and enslaved…

Islam is *profoundly* and obsessively misogynistic to an extent and with an intensity that is, I think, unequalled by any other major religion still extant.

Wafa Sultan stated, in her book “A God who hates”, that “Allah hates women”.

Mohammed, the founder of Islam, was a *rapist*: he raped Rayhana, he raped Juwariiyya, he raped Safiyya (there is *no* bloody way that his sex with her, on the evening of the very day he had had her husband tortured to death, was consensual by any stretch of the imagination), he raped Maria the Copt (she was a *slave*, she had no choice about whether she wanted to be in his bed or not, when she was handed over to him), and since poor little Aisha was only nine, really, *rape* is the best word to describe what he did to her when he bedded her.

And Mohammed is the “perfect man”, the “excellent example of conduct”, whose every deed is deemed worthy of emulation. Sooo…if *he* raped women seized as captives of war…if *he* raped his child-“bride”…what would one expect, of his devoted imitators to this day?

there is an excellent discussion of the sheer perversity of Islam in a symposium published in 2006 – “To rape an unveiled woman”.

The participants were Pierre Rehov, Nancy Kobrin, Peter Raddatz (who is co-author of the Encyclopedia of Islam) and Gudrun Eussner.

    http://archive.frontpagemag.com/readArticle.aspx?ARTID=5347

For anyone to pretend that rape – and a condoning of rape, provided the victim qualifies as Designated Prey – is not more prevalent among Muslims than among any other cultural group, is I think flying in the face of the observable facts.
