In light of the fact that Abdullahi Alazreg said that she would be freed several weeks ago, and then that statement was retracted, this ruling is just empty verbiage unless Meriam Yahya Ibrahim is actually freed. Nevertheless, it does show that international pressure can work even against Sharia supremacists.
“Sudanese court orders release of woman sentenced to death for ‘leaving’ Islam,” by Ashe Schow, Washington Examiner, June 23, 2014:
A Sudanese appeals court has overturned a previous ruling that sentenced Meriam Ibrahim to death for supposedly abandoning her Muslim faith.
“The appeal court ordered the release of Meriam Yahya and the cancellation of the [previous] court ruling,” Sudan’s SUNA news agency reported, as translated by Sky News.
Ibrahim, a 27-year-old mother of two, was sentenced last month to hang for apostasy — the crime of leaving Islam.
But Ibrahim said she was never a Muslim, as she was raised by her Christian Orthodox mother. But according to Sudanese law, because Ibrahim was born in Sudan to a Muslim father, she’s a Muslim.
As such, her marriage to Daniel Wani — an American Christian — was prohibited by law, as interfaith marriages are illegal in Sudan. Because the marriage was not recognized, the courts also sentenced Ibrahim to 100 lashes for adultery.
While the appeals court’s ruling is a step in the right direction, Ibrahim is not free yet.
In early June, Abdullahi Alazreg, Sudan’s ministry of foreign affairs under secretary, said the Sudanese government was working to released Ibrahim. But that statement was retracted.
At the time, Ibrahim’s lawyers said the statement for her release would need to come from the appeals court and not the ministry of foreign affairs.
Perhaps this time, Ibrahim will really be freed.

God is indeed great! There is indeed no compulsion in religion! Those days when people are forced to belong to a religion against their wishes are gone. In the near future countries like Saudi Arabia will begin to allow individuals join the faith of their choice. This will in no way harm Islam or any other faith for that matter.

Islam will NEVER renounce the death penalty for apostates from islam, nor for those who “blaspheme” their prophet Muhammed- pbuh (perpetual banishment unto hell). To renouce violence and killing of unbelievers would be admit that Muhammed was WRONG and that it was INDEED Satan who masqueraded as the angel Gabriel and who gave Muhammed (pbuh- perpetual banishment unto hell) the qur’an!!!
Charli Main says
Gabriel was mad Mohammed´s imaginary little friend and Allah mad Mohammed´s alter ego.
If Mohammed was alive today, he would be arrested and committed indefinitely to a mental institution for the criminally insane.
Burt says
The real Angel Gabriel was given the honour of kneeling before The Woman and announce God’s intention to her, She was to become the true Ark of the new covenant. The first Ark prefigured the Real Presence of God incarnate. Mary assented in Her perfect obedience to be the Mother of the second Person of the Trinity. The Mother of God.
As if Gabriel would have visited the appalling blasphemer Mohammed who tarnished the world with the so starkly, obviously, anti-christian and relentlessly evil cult called Islam.
Muslims use your God given brains, flee your death cult. You just happen to be on the wrong side of truth. It happens. If you happened to be raised by Nazi death camp commanders …same thing.
Break free from this obviously evil ideology. That is your real challenge to win Heaven. God will help you if you just ask for His help. Pray to Jesus, He died for you too!

I want to see Meryam Yahya Ibrahim coming out of US Customs with her kids in tow and into the arms of her husband Daniel Wani. Then I will believe that she was spared.
Further, as a non-black (as far as I know) American Christian, I feel better about my country and more secure about its future when it admits people like the Wani family than when it gets generous to feminist, homosexual, and “independent” Marxist refugees.
Burt says
Me too! I will be very disappointed in America if she is not first given immediate protection from the US embassy, and then given safe passage to a new life in the States.
Did your First Lady ever consider Meriam was worth the bother of a hashtag?

It seems that even Sudan has vestiges of a Western legal system. As murderous a country as it is, it isn’t quite a perfect, 100% pure Islamic State yet.
PJG says
You’re right, John. And even as the Sudanese blame the West for all their troubles, they want to hang on to the infidel legal system as much as possible. Seeing this as illogical, however, is too hard a call for them (I’m generalising of course; shame on me!)

You know what is making me *furious* with all our mainstream media reportings of this story?
They ALL cravenly refer to her as “Meriam Ibrahim” (or the longer version ) – that is, they insist on using her “maiden name”.
*Not one* has ever referred to her as “Meriam nee Ibrahim, Mrs Wani”, or as “Mrs Daniel Wani” or as “Mrs Wani”.
Our Aussie ABC is just as bad as all the rest. I think all of us need to write to the directors of our respective media outlets and put a flea in their ears about it.
Ask them point blank: do you believe this woman’s account of things, according to which she is a Christian, having always professed the Christian faith in which her mother raised her, and according to which she is lawfully married to Mr Wani…or do you believe and endorse the *Muslim* Sudanese Govt view of things, according to which she is “really” a Muslim willy-nilly, no matter what she says or does, and that her marriage is therefore *not* valid, and that therefore she must *only* be referred to by her “Muslim” maiden name, and never be referred to by her *married* name? Let’s call our media out for their gutlessness and their gross discourtesy to this brave woman.
That is: in essence they are acting as if they *agree* with the *Muslim* view of things – that her “true identity” is muslim and that her marriage is null and void.
