You remember all those contributions by Muslim Americans to building the very fabric of our nation, don’t you? Remember the Muslim signers of the Declaration of Independence? And the Muslims who gave James Madison information about the Constitution of Medina that he used when framing the Constitution? Remember the Muslims who fought so valiantly during the War of 1812 and the Mexican War? Remember the Muslim abolitionist Senators who faced down the South in the antebellum Senate, the Senate chamber ringing with their oratory about how the Qur’an says to free slaves and so the U.S. government should, too? Remember the Muslim regiments in the Civil War (all on the Union side, of course!)? The Muslim industrialists who brought us railroads, the telegraph, the telephone? The Muslims who fought so valiantly in the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II? The Muslim entertainers who kept us laughing on the Vaudeville circuit and on the home front during those terrible world wars with their jokes from the Hadith?
None of this rings a bell? Not to worry. Before too long it will be taught in all the textbooks. “Statement by the President on the Occasion of Eid-al-Fitr,” The White House, Office of the Press Secretary, July 27, 2014:
As Muslims throughout the United States and around the world celebrate Eid-al-Fitr, Michelle and I extend our warmest wishes to them and their families. This last month has been a time of fasting, reflection, spiritual renewal, and service to the less fortunate. While Eid marks the completion of Ramadan, it also celebrates the common values that unite us in our humanity and reinforces the obligations that people of all faiths have to each other, especially those impacted by poverty, conflict, and disease.
In the United States, Eid also reminds us of the many achievements and contributions of Muslim Americans to building the very fabric of our nation and strengthening the core of our democracy. That is why we stand with people of all faiths, here at home and around the world, to protect and advance their rights to prosper, and we welcome their commitment to giving back to their communities.
On behalf of the Administration, we wish Muslims in the United States and around the world a blessed and joyous celebration. Eid Mubarak.

Judging by the propaganda from CAIR, Muslims have contributed exactly NOTHING to the US. They can’t because they are victims of Islamophobia.
The greatest contribution of Islam to the US was the attack of the World Trade Towers killing 3,000 people.
The second greatest contribution was the attack on the Pentagon.
Then, there are is growing list of destruction around the world…

The only contribution Muslims made to the USA was (via the Muslim Barbary pirate attacks on US merchant shipping in and near the Mediterranean) to necessitate the creation of the US navy and the U S Marines. “From the shores of Tripoli”, and so on.
Kepha says
While I think our POTUS’ remarks chiefly hokum bunkum and boilerplate (he’d say the same about Protestants if they were fashionable and it were the birthday of Martin Luther or Huldrych Zwingli), I think you’re not altogether correct about Muslim contributions to the USA.
One of the leaders of a mini-real estate boom in Washington back in the late 18th century was a freed slave named Mohammed Yerrow (his descendants are Baptists and Methodists). Due to the lack of a Muslim cemetery in Washington at the time, his bones lie under some piece of pricey Georgetown real estate that used to be his garden.
In the 19th century, a Syrian named Haj Ali taught the US Army how to handle camels (they were being used in our southwestern deserts). In the 17th century, an Egyptian trader resident in Nieuw Amsterdam (it was still Dutch back then!) by the name of Nosreddin may have had the dubious honor of being one of the first white settlers to be burned at the stake by hostile Indians.
On the more serious side, I’ve known Muslims connected to our military and State Department who’ve served well and honorably–even if I have little use for their religion.
Then again, I suspect that our great, honorable, noble, exalted POTUS probably thinks that Malcolm X, that peculiarly all-American mix of politicized anger and flummery, made a positive contribution to our country.
New_Crusader says
In 1786 Thomas Jefferson wrote…
“We took the liberty to make some inquiries concerning the Grounds of
their [muslims] pretensions to make war upon a Nation who had done them no Injury,
and observed that we considered all mankind as our Friends who had done
us no wrong, nor had given us any provocation. The ambassador answered us that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was
written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have
acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right
and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to
make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every
Musselman (Muslim) who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to
Paradise.”
Not much has changed in 228 years.
Bill Christian says
Islam and Muslims did contribute to our history.
The war with the Barbary States, President Jefferson sent the US Navy and Marines to stop them from attacking American shipping. The ships were sized, the cargo stolen and the crew sold as slaves or held for ransom.
President Jefferson respondent with force and stopped the Muslim Barbary States, from attacking the American ships. Thus the Marine song lyrics:
From the Halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli;
We fight our country’s battles
In the air, on land, and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marine.

The boilerplate was indubitably composed by some cretin in his public relations apparat who has absorbed and regurgitates this mess without much thought.
Shane says
Obama is a dhimmi and an Islamophile. No, he does not believe this nonsense, but he foolishly believes that if we praise Muslims all the time then they will not hate us and want to kill us. I think the opposite that Obama’s fawning towards Islam makes the Muslims believe that the USA is weak.

I can think of some contributions:
1) The discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. He and other explorers would not have looked for a western trade route had Muslim marauders not made the eastern route unsafe.
2) Enhanced airport security techniques, developed to help foil Muslim hijackers.
3) Drone technology, developed at least partially for pinpoint strikes on jihadists.
4) Anti-missile technology like Iron Dome, developed with Israel to protect from terrorist rockets.
These are just of few of their valuable contributions. Thank you, Muslims.

And what are pious Muslims celebrating with Eid al-Fitr? Why, the Battle of Badr, where the “Prophet” raided a caravan and killed the caravan’s defenders in 624.
This is his first slaughter of Infidels, and led directly to the founding of the Islamic state—and the conquest and murder of millions of Infidels over the past almost 1400 years.
*That* is what he is celebrating today.
And his line about “Palestinian” children could not be more perverse—it is Hamas who is using their own children as human shields, and using schools and hospitals as weapons dumps, and using playgrounds as bases from which to launch missiles at Jewish civilians.
More:

What crap. Jews have *never* called for the genocide of Muslims.
And see how “enlightened” “squeezethejuice” wants to appear here.
This *does not* means what “squeezethejuice” want us to believe it does—some sort of real desire for peace.
He has always said that, unlike many of his genocidal coreligionists, that he is not for the out-and-out genocide of the Jews.
The clue is not subtle—it is in his name. He believes that Jews should be conquered, terrified, and cowed—and then the survivors should be used as slaves, with crushing Jizya payments.
He believes that the Jews are simply too productive for Muslims to kill them all off—instead, they should be used as milch-cows until they drop.
This is like a “moderate” Nazi who thought that Jews should be worked to death instead of sent to the ovens.
This is not conjecture on my part—the appalling “squeezethejuice” has advocated for this quite openly several times before. *Ugh*.

How old are the kids?
Because there’s an excellent book by C S Forester, about the Barbary Pirates, that was written with intelligent late-primary/ early high school kids in mind.
It’s called “The Barbary Pirates” and it has some good stuff about Islam, and a rip-roaring (but well-researched and so far as I can see, historically accurate) account of the US campaign against the Barbary Pirates.
You could recommend that book to the kids – or to their parents.
A great way of getting perspective and realizing that Muslim attacks on the US began waaaay back when the US was *not* a major world power, when it was a newly-born fledgling republic just venturing out into the world, and when there was *no* Israel and *no* significant US involvement in any part of the “Middle East” or “Muslim world” or “Arab world”.

dumbledoresarmy says
A good “overview” book on the influence of Judaism, written in an accessible style, is Tom Cahill’s “The Gifts of the Jews”.
Any intelligent teenager could read it and understand it.
For parents, re. Christianity, there’s Mr Spencer’s “Religion of Peace? Why Christianity Is and Islam Isn’t”, and David Bentley Hart’s “Atheist Delusions: The Christian Revolution and Its Fashionable Enemies”, which simply *demolishes* a whole bunch of post-“enlightenment” myths about eeeevil Christianity (e.g the myth that “Christianity hated/ destroyed science and philosophy”). He’s no pollyanna or blanket apologist – he’s a very realistic, sober writer well aware of the many ways in which, historically, Christians have failed and fallen flat on their faces – but he manages to single out some of the truly distinctive things about Christianity (and if his book is read in conjunction with Cahill’s book on the Jews, one can see that the distinctives of Christianity are in continuity with/ birthed from the distinctives of Judaism) and the real and solid positive changes that it produced. Another good book is a book by a man from India, Vishal Mangalwadi, called “The Book That Made Your World”, which basically reminds modern westerners of the huge debt that they owe to the Bible.
I think in some ways D B Hart, who writes from an Eastern Orthodox perspective, and Hindu-background Mangalwadi, who writes from the perspective of someone who now worships and practises within the evangelical Protestant tradition, complement each other. Together, they offer fascinating insights.

Obama’s Eid message praises “contributions of Muslim Americans to building the very fabric of our nation”
……………………………..
As other posters have already noted, the *only* “contribution” Muslims made to America before the two attacks on the World Trade Center was spurring the founding of our Navy and Marine Corps to fight the ravening Barbary Pirates who were pirating our ships and enslaving our crews.
Oh—and they provided some great villains for popular literature and Hollywood before we became too “politically correct”.
Other than that, we had been mostly able to just ignore these savages for most of our history.
Kilfincelt says
The Barbary Pirates also enslaved somewhere around a million to a million and half whites by attacking ships in the Mediterranean as well as kidnapping whole European communities that lived along the Med coastline. Italy was particularly hard hit. Some people were ransomed, but those who could not buy their way out often ended up enslaved and sent to the Ottoman Empire where they disappeared into the general slave population.
Many European countries including the U. S. paid tribute to these pirates to leave their shipping and crews alone. In fact in the 1790’s as much as 25% of the U.S. federal government revenue went to pay this fee. The first Barbary War was initiated by Jefferson to stop some of the Barbary Pirate nonsense. The second Barbary War in 1815 ended the payment of tribute for good. European countries followed suit with the North African and Barbary rulers falling to the European imperialism.

Robert, you forgot to recount other Muslim contributions to the fabric of American culture: Thomas Edison, who invented the light bulb, and George Gershwin in music, and Robert Fulton for the steam engine, and Blackjack Pershing, who fought the Mexican invaders before WWI (we wouldn’t hear of that now, would we?), and Ayn Rand, the novelist and philosopher, and Mark Twain in literature, and H.L. Mencken, the critic, and William Makepeace Thackery, and Scott Joplin in popular music, and so on. They were all closet Muslims. Seriously, when one reads Obama’s “tribute” to Muslim contributions to America, it says absolutely nothing. Oh, and let’s not forget the Muslim navigator who helped Columbus discover America — whoever that was.
Always On Watch says

Always On Watch says
Edward Cline,
I realize that you were being sarcastic. However, there actually exist teaching materials with that particular lie in them.
Have you ever heard of a book called Servants of Allah? Various Muslim groups — CAIR is one — placed copies of that book in library systems all over America. Servants of Allah has been prominently displayed in the libraries — in the African-American heritage displays.

it is true that Columbus had a Muslim navigator. In fact this is where all the mythology about Columbus arose. The story goes that Columbus, believing that the earth was round, was trying to find a new route to the East Indies. Any Muslim navigator worth his salt knows that the earth is flat.

The National Air and Space Museum is an interesting example. In one of their exhibit halls on the Mall in Washington, DC, they present artifacts of early astronomers. There are all sorts of references to instruments used by Herschel, Galileo, Kepler, Brahe, etc. They are each referred to by their country…English, Italian, German, Dane. (though it is well documented that their inspiration to study the stars was their Christian faith) In addition to telescopes, there are also astrolabes. (devices for citing stars) These are not Persian, or Mesopotamian…they’re Islamic. I e-mailed the museum and had an exchange with the curator about this inconsistent treatment. I was dismissed for not understanding that this is the common way in which academia understands these things.
CogitoErgoSum says
Bob, according to Wikipedia, the astrolabe was invented in the Hellenistic world in 150 B.C. by Hipparchus. The word astrolabe can be traced back to the Greek word “astrolabos” which is derived from astron (star) and lambanein (to take). People in the Islamic world helped make some improvements to the astrolabe but credit for its invention belongs to the Greeks.
