Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Robert Spencer in Real Clear Religion: Whitewashing the Caliphate

Jul 7, 2014 6:01 am By Robert Spencer

al-Baghdadi3Over at Real Clear Religion today I discuss the New York Times’ fantasy-based and ahistorical attempt to dismiss the legitimacy of the new Islamic State caliphate. The more people reject the legitimacy of the caliphate, the better, but doing so on false pretenses doesn’t accomplish anything but — here again — deceiving non-Muslims into complacency.

The dominant dogma regarding jihadism, that Islam is a religion of peace that has been hijacked by a tiny minority of extremists who distort its teachings to justify violence, has been put to a severe test by the declaration of a new caliphate in Iraq and Syria. The mainstream media is fighting back.

The Islamic State, as it calls itself, has issued several declarations thick with Koranic citations and mainstream media to explain and justify its positions. Its conscious, explicit, and deeply rooted Islamic character has rattled mainstream media cages — to the extent that articles have begun to appear claiming that this new caliphate is no caliphate at all, so unlike its illustrious predecessors as to be unworthy of the name.

That was the central claim of an article that appeared in the New York Times Wednesday: “The Caliphate Fantasy” by Khaled Diab, “an Egyptian-Belgian journalist based in Jerusalem.” Diab complains: “The problem with this new caliphate…is that it is ahistorical, to say the least.” Why? Because “the Abbasid caliphate, for example, which ruled from 750 to 1258, was an impressively dynamic and diverse empire.” The Abbasid caliphate, Diab asserts, “thrived on multiculturalism, science, innovation, learning and culture — in sharp contrast to ISIS’ violent puritanism.”

Multiculturalism? Bat Ye’or, the pioneering historian of dhimmitude, the institutionalized second-class status Islamic law stipulates for non-Muslims in the Islamic state, notes of Jews and Christians in this “multicultural” caliphate that “it was during the Abbasid period that their degrading status developed and was integrated into the legal system of the dar al-Islam.” She writes of the crushing taxes that the Abbasids made the dhimmis pay, in accord with the Koran’s dictum that they “pay the jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued” (9:29). “Money was extorted by blows, torture and death,” Bat Ye’or writes, “particularly by crucifixion.”

Ultimately “the dhimmis, ruined by taxation, abandoned their lands and villages,” hoping to escape to the anonymity of the city, whereupon a “drive to track down dhimmi peasants, organized throughout the Abbasid Empire, required a considerable number of participants, who were joined by brigands greedy for plunder and pillage.” The plunder and pillage of the minority communities was considered to be their due as a sign of their submission to the Islamic state.

Diab ignores all this, and asserts that Muhammad established quite a different paradigm: “Muhammad, the most ‘rightly guided’ of all, composed a strikingly secular document in the Constitution of Medina. It stipulated that Muslims, Jews, Christians and even pagans had equal political and cultural rights — a far cry from ISIS’ punitive attitude toward even fellow Sunnis who do not practice its brand of Islam, let alone Shiites, Christians or other minorities.” In reality, the Constitution of Medina is of doubtful authenticity: it is first mentioned in Ibn Ishaq’s biography of Muhammad, which was written over 125 years after the accepted date for Muhammad’s death.

And unfortunately for Diab, Ibn Ishaq also details what happened to three Jewish tribes of Arabia after the Constitution of Medina. Muhammad exiled the Banu Qaynuqa and Banu Nadir, massacred the Banu Qurayza after they (understandably) made a pact with his enemies during the pagan Meccans’ siege of Medina, and then massacred the exiles at the Khaybar oasis, giving Muslims even today a bloodthirsty war chant: “Khaybar, Khaybar, O Jews, the army of Muhammad will return.” (Indicative of the influence of Khaybar, and not the Constitution of Medina, in the real world outside the pages of the New York Times is the fact that while jihadists frequently repeat the Khaybar chant, no one ever chants, “Relax, relax, O Jews, the Constitution of Medina will return.”)…

Why is the NYT printing this ?

Because its readers — a predominance of whom are affluent left-of-center educated people — are having their beloved Privilege Guilt severely tested by the current Middle East.

But how about ordinary average Americans ?

Our reaction is “Caliphate Shmaliphate ! ” We will not waste a moment for degreed idiots bloviating about legitimacy / historicity blah blah blah. Simply seeing reality is enough to tell us the truth.

Ah, but more than just the pseudo-geeks who actually buy that paper will be get the message, as the NYT angle is dutifully picked up by television networks, talk show hosts, teachers, celebrities, and politicians. The message is that there are good caliphates and bad caliphates, even phony ones. The central benefit program, tens of millions of them, not just a few million subscribers, to think in terms of a prism of Moslem governance, from the bad and the good.

The premise of such a fantastical imagining is false, disproved by history and scripture alike, is staggeringly false. Accept the premise, and your American brain has been properly programmed. Actually, it’s more like a automatically downloaded update to your existing opinion program, to account for the sour explosive fruit born of Prez Barack Hussein’s Arab Spring.

It takes a lot of nerve for the NYT to accuse anybody of ahistoricity, given the enormous Big Lie it’s foisting, too big to see, too big to put the lie too. This is where the bubble of the Islam Fictive Reality overlaps the Race Fictive Reality bubble, and a couple other bubbles percolating right there in the neighborhood too.

Here’s a thought experiment: Any worthwhile history of Western reporting on the Cold War must account for Walter Druanty’s handling of the Stalin purges. It follows that any worthwhile history of Islam must account for its scriptures the results they yield when applied by to human organization.

WARNING — LANGUAGE RATED “R” IS IN THIS COMMENT AND PLEASE PARDON THE CAPITALISATION.

Hello to our Muslim Congresspersons — KEITH ELLISON AND ANDRE CARSON. Have you gotten instructions yet from Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi about which target to attack ?

Let me be totally frank with you both — TRAITORS SEEKING TO OVERTHROW THE UNITED STATES PISS ME OFF.

The taqiyya crap press release videos, “We condemn this violence” — hoping to mislead clueless Americans — is too little and too late.

I and my buddies have invested heavily in private drones. Not cheap but very effective, and they are flying now over targets.

Are you both included in such a complete observation ? That is a question best nailed by Islam’s spiritual brothers.

Get back to us here with an answer.

The constant white washing of Islamic history is one reasons the islamic world is frozen in its culture or is always trying to return to an idolized past. This white washing is done both by the islamic world and the west. This NYT article is a good example of this. The Islamic world needs to look in mirror and sees its faults. It needs to grown up and be an adult. We must allow them to be teenagers at least and see some of there faults.
Islam came in the world as a state religion and not by preaching. The mostly Christian North Africa, Spain, and West Asia was conquered in the first 100 years, Zoroastrian Persia was also conquered, and Hindu and Buddhist Pakistan, and Afghanistan. There a centuries long fight to conquer India. It is estimated 80 million Indians died in this struggle. The muslims invaders never fully islamized India because the Hindus put up a good fight. This also helped Buddhist world behind India to remain Buddhist today.
The entire North Africa except Egypt was deChristianized during muslim rule. Algeria and Tunisia was one of the earliest and most Christian places in the world. There are no native Christians today and has not been for centuries. This is strange, St.Augustine was a great Christian and he was Algerian. Yemen also was totally deChristinized. So there were areas where toleration Christians was nil in the muslim world in those centuries.
The muslim slave trade constited of four areas: the coastline of Europe for European Christians, the Black Sea area for slavs, Africa, and India. The Zanj rebellion in Iraq was rebellion of black slaves. It was quite large rebellion. It scared the Islamic world so much, that castration was practiced on a large scale after this rebellion on male slaves. 17 million black slaves from Africa were thought to be enslaved from the 600s to the 1900s. Also all the males were castrated, so no separate black culture developed in main center of Islam : North Africa, and West Asia. It is thought one and half million Europeans were enslaved by the muslims from the 600s to the 1800s. Muslim pirates would raid the coasts and capture slaves , bring them to boats and sell them in the Muslim world. The coast line of Europe was not developed for a long time because of this. For example, the french riviera ( 1860s) and the spanish beach culture (1960s) is very recent. The Black Sea Slave trade constited of 3 million slavs from the 600s to the 1800s. It is estimated 3 million slavs were enslaved. The raiders raided towns, forced the slaves to the coast to boats, young and old died on the way, and sold in the muslim world. In India the slave trade was huge, castration of males was common also like the black slaves. Some white male slaves were castrated but not on grand scale like the Africans and the Indians.
When the muslim conquerors first started in the 600s, it was garrison towns. These garrison towns were stocked with slaves from raids. To be free, a lot of these slaves converted to Islam. This is the major way Islam grew in the non- Muslim cultures that the muslim conquerers conquered. This is just bit of the faults of the muslim world. The muslim world and the west seem to work together to hide the faults. The muslim world needs to grow up. Stop feeding them the bottle. At least allow them to be at least toddlers

The traitorous left allied with Islamic groups and decided that Islam is a religion of peace. They are not going to change that belief no matter how much evidence of the violence committed by Muslims around the world, or by doing research on Muhammad the history of Islamic conquests around the world.

This gives the lie to the oft repeated claim by Muslims and their fellow travellers on the lib/left that the media is controlled by the Jews. A claim also beloved of Dr Goebbels. If the media are in fact controlled by the Jews the media would be publicising the persecution of Jews not the opposite, which is apologising for Islam!

The “silliness” of all of this is that the Islamic civilization we are talking about existed prior to the 15th century. To defend the Caliphate during the Middle Ages by today’s standards is absurd, e.g. “Multicultural”.

It is true that certain Christian and Jewish communities were tolerated from the Middle Ages to modern times. The Jews suffered near extinction of their ancient communities after 1948. The Christians are getting the same treatment now. The last time revolutionary forces were unleashed, the Armenian Christians were massacred. Strange that no one is making that analogy…

From the perspective of the Muslim Brotherhood and their ideologists, these events are a continuation of an inevitable historical process, not a change in direction. To say the actions of the New Caliphate are “un-Islamic” is like saying the Inquisition was “un-Catholic”.

Strange that Jews and Christians lived in Muslim majority areas until the 20th century! The Jews even preferred living under Muslim rule, those who could fled together with the Moors when the Spanish and their inquisition initiated the holocaust of Al Andalus. The Spanish even had triumphalist names for certain cities, like Castrillo Matajudios (“Fort kill the Jews”) and they even founded a Mexican city by the name of Matamoros (“kill the Moors”) that still exists today with the name unchanged. We Muslims never had this kind of sadistic impulses.

More recently, ISIS and Al Qaida have corrupted Islamic thought, by mixing it with Western ideas of cultural supremacy and revolutionary thought. Let’s not forget that the Armenian and Greek massacres happened under the revolutionary regime of Mustafa Kemal and his Young Turks that was inspired by Western thought; the Christians lived in peace under the Ottoman Caliphate and were treated well.

What you say about the Jews in Spain is not exact. In 1492, after almost 800 years of Islamic domination Spain was able to kick them out. Now the notion at the time was that theirs was a Christian nation, and this is understandable as they had fought achieve its independence from three Mulsimm invasions. Now, the Jews had been expelled from England and France among other places and many of them took refuge i in Spain, and their status in there was that of “guests of the king”. They were not citizens, as in accordance with the understanding of the time the could not be so. They were given the optin of converting. Some of them did, but others pretended to do so. It was against the latter that the Inqjuisition operated. In the capitulation of Granada, the Muslims were given generouse terms, but it turned out later that they had to be expelled as they formed a fifth column in the country and those of them who had gone to Africa dedicated themselves to pillage and attacks on the Spanishs coast. That is where the saying in Spanish “Moors on the coast”, meaning attacks by pirates.
As for the Inquisition, it obviously was not a good thing, but it must be understood within the mentality of the time. Plus, it was not all evil either. A witch would have been far better off falling into the hands of the Inquisition than a civil court. Also, whiletProtestants in Germany, France, Holland and elsewhere were the real provokers of the religious wars creating havoc in all those countries, thanks to the Inquisition Spain was saved all that carnage, in which a third of the German population died. Plues in the 16th and 17th centuries Spain experienced its most splendid cultural period, called the “Golden Century”. Spain’s enemies, particularly England and France invented a whole lot of lies about Spain which are called “The Black Legend”.
In those days the English were expert pirates and the French were in cahoots with the Turks. On September 11 1683, an immense Turkish army which had Vienna under siege was defeated by the Polish KIng plus others. Neither the French Sun KIng, Lous XIV nor the Protestant King of Prussia raised a finger to prevent the Muslims from overrunnng Vienna and taking central Europe. They were not that unlike our present Western governments.

What about the some 36,000 churches destroyed by Muslims during the “expansion” (“rape” is more like it) in the immediate years after Islam’s pedophiliac founder died? How about the untold number of Hindu and Buddhists slaughtered and their artwork destroyed by Muslim “appropriation?” Ah, the list of Muslim atrocities is a very long one and has gone on for many centuries.

“Jews even preferred living under Muslim rule…” – Squeezethejuice

What a whole lot of crap!! That Jews were better off under Muslim rule?
Starting with your mass murdering psychopath’ prophet’ who wiped out various Jewish communities from Arabia; Muslims had been in the business of persecuting and massacring Jews long before Christians.

As far back as 627AD (Fez), 1012 (Cordoma) and 1066 (Granada) Muslims organized pogroms of Jews. In fact Christian learnt the horrid practice from Muslims.

There were just as many Jews in the Muslim world (if not more) than in the Christian world. Yet only Jews in Christendom are known to have made immense intellectual contribution to humanity as evidenced by the disproportionate number of Nobel prizes they won.
This implies Jews in the Christian world enjoyed much more personal and intellectual freedom than under Muslim tyranny.

“The Spanish even had triumphalist names for certain cities, like Castrillo Matajudios (“Fort kill the Jews”) ” – squeezethejuice.

What about your Islamic scriptures which incite Muslims to kill Jews?

”Allah’s Apostle (Mohammed) said, ‘You Muslims will fight the Jews till some of them hide behind stones. The stones will betray them saying, “O servant of Allah, there is a Jew hiding behind me; so kill him.”’ – Sahih Bukhari 4:5:176, 177

Our family lived in Constantinople and had to flee to Italy. Kitman and Taqqia don’t work here. Queen Isabella and Ferdinand were over the Spanish Inquisition. Converting wasn’t required but some people pretended to convert and were subverting Isabella’s queenship. Hence the Inquisition (inquest). The jews of that time were helping the Muslims. It’s not working out too well for them now is it? Kinda changes when they have their own state being targeted by crazy Muslims.

The Middle Ages? Here’s what their prophet Muhammad said:
“Verily the best among you (to follow) is my generation (the Messenger
Muhammad (SAW) and his Companions (RA)), then those who follow, and
then those who follow them…” (Saheeh Muslim, Book: the Virtues of the
    Sahaabah, chapter 52 hadeeth #2535)

That’s who pious caliphs should be emulating. The salafi, according to the boss. The generation of the first Abu Bakr, of Umar, of the mass murdering general Khalid ibn al-Walid. Of the war on apostasy waged upon the thousands of Muslims who tried to leave Islam after the death of Muhammad. Of the brutal conquests, the rivers of blood, blood and destruction. These were called the best of Muslims, nothing of learning and culture in sight.

“Abu Bakr ordered Khalid ibn al-Walid to invade Persian lands and seize the ports near Iraq. Khalid sent his famous message to Hermez, one of the Iraqi generals “embrace Islam or pay the poll tax or fight.” The Hermez declined, the Persians were defeated in this battle–one fifth of the booty was sent to Abu Bakr. In the battle of Alees, on the border of Iraq, Khalid killed 70,000 people. At Ayn al-Tamr in Iraq its people took shelter in one of the fortresses. Khalid laid siege and forced them to come out. He killed all of them mercilessly (for refusing to embrace Islam and recognize Muhammad).”
–The Rightly Guided Caliphs, Dr. Abu Zayd Shalabi

“The foreign policy of the Islamic states must be to carry the Islamic mission to the world by way of holy war. This process has been established through the course of the ages…the Apostle Muhammad, from the time he founded the State in the city of Yathrib, prepared an army and began holy war to remove the physical barriers which hinder the spread of Islam. He subdued the tribe of Qurayash as a body, along with similar groups until Islam prevailed all over the Arabian peninsula. Then the Islamic State started to knock at the doors of other states to spread Islam. Whenever it was found that the nature of the existing system in these states was a barrier which prevented the spread of the mission, they saw it as inevitable that the system was removed. So holy war continued as a means of spreading Islam. Thus by holy war, countries and regions were conquered. By holy war kingdoms and states were removed and Islam ruled the nations and peoples.

“Carrying the Islamic mission is the basis on which the Islamic state was established, the Islamic army was founded, and holy war was ordained…if we besiege the infidels we would call them to embrace Islam first…if they reject Islam, they have to pay the poll-tax. If they pay it they spare their blood and properties but if they refuse to pay the poll-tax then fighting them becomes lawful. These words and principles are confirmed by all the Muslim scholars. The apostle of God designed the plan of conquest before his death, then after him, his successors undertook the responsibility of implementing this plan when they started conquering the countries. Later, the Islamic conquests followed successfully on this basis. People’s resistance or rejection does not matter because the Islamic system is for all people in all countries.”
–The Book of the Islamic State, al-Nabhani 1953

The Constitution of Medina (if real) was like all such agreements with the Muslims, not worth the paper it was printed on.

Speaking of learning and culture, there are reports the statues of the Mosul Museum are the next targets for the pious ones. Because Muhammad said he wouldn’t enter a house with statues. Because all pre-Islamic and non-Islamic art is false and of jahiliyyah (stupidity and ignorance). The “idol” smashers and library burners and church eviscerators are the true models for the new caliphate. That is why the IS is demolishing holy sites and artifacts, the latest reportedly the tomb of Jonah. In the great tradition of the best of Muslims, the ones who razed tens of thousands of temples and shrines in India, their imitators who destroyed the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan, and their Islamic reasons for doing so.

Excellent post, Rojm. Worth reading 3 times. Sometimes comments don’t seem to go up right away so one ends up with multiple postings. There are a lot of reasons for the whitewashing. From the Muslim side it’s obvious, there is a lot to hide. Deception was both a survival strategy then a doctrine for advancement (“war is deceit”). No wrong must ever be connected to Islam. Islam is always absolved of guilt or blame. Islam is always the victim, first harmed, first attacked, first hated. Crimes will either be denied (this is not Islam) or excused (they started it) or blamed on a shadowy conspiracy (Jews, Satan, America). Injustice is something imposed on Muslims. With Allah and his messenger the final word on any matter. Islam is not about thinking for yourself (growing up). That would be rebellion. The reasons for the West to whitewash Islam range from woeful ignorance (the whitewashing of the history of Islam, a history we weren’t taught) to civilizational self-loathing (sympathy for their accusations against us) but it is best described under the general heading, dhimmitude.

Of course, you’re Shi’a brethren would disagree with you.

Saying you want elections SOUNDS nice, except all the schools of juriprudence agree that a muslim should mistreat infidels (Especially Jews), kill those who leave Islam, oppress women and more. How democratic!
