Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Dearborn: Muslim cleric popular with Islamic State jihadis owes $250K for fraud

Aug 23, 2014 10:53 pm By Robert Spencer

AhmedJebrilJihadists often believe themselves to be entitled to the money of the Infidels, in lieu of the payment of the jizya, the tax specified for dhimmis in the Islamic state (Qur’an 9:29). The jizya will be collected when that becomes possible.

Meanwhile, is anyone in authority watching this Muslim cleric who is so popular with supporters of the Islamic State? Or would that be “Islamophobic,” and subject to a scolding follow-up piece penned by the thoroughly compromised pro-jihad “journalist” Niraj Warikoo?

“U.S.: Dearborn cleric popular with ISIS fighters owes $250K for fraud,” by Niraj Warikoo, Detroit Free Press, August 21, 2014:

A cleric in Dearborn popular with supporters of the militant group ISIS owes a quarter of a million dollars in restitution and other costs stemming from his fraud convictions, according to newly filed court records.

Ahmad Jebril, 43, who has gained an international following among ISIS fighters and sympathizers, is on probation after serving 6½ years in prison. After being released in 2012, he has used social media to become what experts say is the most popular religious leader for Islamists from the West fighting for ISIS, also known as ISIL or the Islamic State.

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama strongly condemned ISIS for decapitating American journalist James Foley and massacring people as it advances in Iraq, calling to “extract this cancer so that it does not spread.” The U.S. launched air strikes this month against the group and will continue them, Obama said.

Federal authorities in Detroit are trying to collect more than $250,000 in restitution from Jebril and more than $3,600 in special assessments for 42 counts of fraud. So far, Jebril has paid only $2,790, according to a motion filed Aug. 11 by the U.S. Attorney’s office in Detroit. On Aug. 12, U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen approved the government’s motion, which calls for “actions necessary to enforce the collection of the restitution.”

In the motion, federal prosecutors wrote that a probation officer said she has “financial information about (Jebril) that would be helpful” to set up an “appropriate repayment schedule.” Jebril’s liability for restitution expires 20 years after his release from prison, which means he would have to pay more than $1,000 a month to pay his amount in full, which he is currently not meeting, said prosecutors.

Jebril and his attorney did not returns calls or an e-mail seeking comment. He was to appear for a deposition in the case on Aug. 13.

The government’s move to collect money from Jebril comes after Rosen placed restrictions on the Dearborn cleric in June because of his probation violations. Jebril was traveling out of state to speak at Islamic centers, but now is not allowed to leave the eastern half of Michigan and must share information about his computer activity to his probation officers if asked. The restrictions came after a Free Press report in May that noted his extensive activities online.

The Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence released a report in April that said Jebril was the most popular inspirational figure for Western fighters flocking to the Middle East to join ISIS. Jebril’s “popularity is particularly strong among groups like ISIS,” the report said. Among the militants the center surveyed, more than half of those who liked Jebril on his Facebook page and followed him on Twitter were with ISIS.

“A number of British ISIS fighters have told us that they watched his (Jebril’s) lecture series …before embarking on jihad,” the report said, which was written by three security experts for a center affiliated with five universities.

Jebril often interacts on Twitter with fighters associated with ISIS and other groups, the report said.

The ISIS member who decapitated Foley in a video released this week sounded like he had a British accent, prompting a debate in England Wednesday over whether the ISIS member was British. FBI officials and the center that released the report have voiced concerns about fighters from Western countries like England, the U.S., Australia, France, and Germany flocking to fight for ISIS and other radical groups.

Jebril also is popular with Jabhat al-Nusra, another extremist group that operates in Syria. Jebril’s Facebook page was the most popular among the fighters surveyed, according to the report.

Jebril and his father were convicted in 2005 of 42 counts of fraud of almost $400,000 that included mail fraud, bank fraud, failure to pay income tax and money laundering.

The two deliberately defaced rental properties in order to collect insurance money. They also were convicted of trying to bribe a juror in their trial by offering to pay for her wedding if she helped acquit them.

Meanwhile, supporters of Jebril and ISIS are rallying online to the defense of the Dearborn cleric, saying the government is unfairly cracking down on him.

In recent weeks, followers have tweeted support for Jebril, claiming he is being silenced, but the government has not banned him from speaking out or posting online. Jebril’s popular Twitter (26,000-plus followers) and Facebook (219,000-plus likes) accounts have not posted anything since July 9.

Study his picture, this is an image of Satan.

Fairly obvious. Great, Satan is on probation and will be paying restitution (not).

The West really needs to wake up to the Evil in the world, and now in our midst.

      Image

Image of Satan may be a bit of an exaggeration.
But the concept of ‘Image’ in Islam is important in Islam.
Islam is more about maintaining an image and worshipping that same image than having a true faith in their so-called Allah.
Vanity, when cleverly disguised as humility will cause people to do really crazy things while serving one’s ego.

A Muslim man without a ‘special’ Muslim styled beard or a Muslim woman without a hijab might be mistaken for a non-Muslim.
What purpose would it serve Muslims to sacrifice by praying five times a day if they are not able to let others know that they are making their religious duty and are therefore more entitled than their neighbors.
These prayers to an unknowable Allah have no value if the prayers are done in a way that is unknowable.

Why is this guy not in prison? He is encouraging Muslim/Americans to fight for a terrorist organization that the USA is bombing right now. Put this traitor in prison now, and put him in isolation so he can’t spread the message of jihad while in prison.

          Hi Salah

I am curious as to the correct spelling of the following:

          Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi
          Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi

When I do an internet search I get both versions sometimes ‘al’ sometimes ‘el’ sometimes it is capitalized and sometimes not.

If you happen to see this comment, please advise which is correct.

          Hi Jay Boo.
Actually both are correct. “El” or “Al” in arabic are the equivalent of the english definite article “The”, arabic speakers usually pronounce it both ways.

I think ISIS is still being underestimated. Suppose they have 2,000 followers in the United States. Just think of the damage that those 2,000 individuals could cause. This isn’t discussed much but there have been several cults that have caused great damage. In Oregon in the 1980s, a cult used salmonella in an effort to take control of a town. And, most of the members of that cult were probably unaware of what was being done. ISIS is incredibly dangerous. We have to find the ISIS people over here and deport them.

a point that may help this teacher to not be underestimated: [from 5May14 DFP article about the case and also referring to the report mentioned above]

He provides the political and theological justification these guys are looking for,” said Peter Neumann, a professor of security studies at King’s College in London and director of the International Centre, who was one of three authors of the report. “He’s someone who’s important to the movement. … He articulates what they think. He provides comfort.”

and so, it is the quiet intoner of SHARIA (sunni version) investigators should look for, not the firebrand.

… provides comfort … never thought of a jihadi relishing comfort … (human after all, though enslaved to SHARIA)

too bad for them. the Allah god of Islam (unknowable; the best of all deceivers) cannot comfort, but can only reinforce its erroneous ways of beneficent rage and bloody death.
