According to Islamic law, Muslim men can take “captives of the right hand” (Qur’an 4:3, 4:24, 33:50). The Qur’an says: “O Prophet! Lo! We have made lawful unto thee thy wives unto whom thou hast paid their dowries, and those whom thy right hand possesseth of those whom Allah hath given thee as spoils of war” (33:50). 4:3 and 4:24 extend this privilege to Muslim men in general. The Egyptian Sheikh Abu-Ishaq al-Huwayni declared in May 2011 that “we are in the era of jihad,” and that meant Muslims would take slaves. In a subsequent interview he elaborated:
Jihad is only between Muslims and infidels. Spoils, slaves, and prisoners are only to be taken in war between Muslims and infidels. Muslims in the past conquered, invaded, and took over countries. This is agreed to by all scholars—there is no disagreement on this from any of them, from the smallest to the largest, on the issue of taking spoils and prisoners. The prisoners and spoils are distributed among the fighters, which includes men, women, children, wealth, and so on.
When a slave market is erected, which is a market in which are sold slaves and sex-slaves, which are called in the Qur’an by the name milk al-yamin, “that which your right hands possess” [Koran 4:24]. This is a verse from the Qur’an which is still in force, and has not been abrogated. The milk al-yamin are the sex-slaves. You go to the market, look at the sex-slave, and buy her. She becomes like your wife, (but) she doesn’t need a (marriage) contract or a divorce like a free woman, nor does she need a wali. All scholars agree on this point—there is no disagreement from any of them. […] When I want a sex slave, I just go to the market and choose the woman I like and purchase her.
Around the same time, on May 25, 2011, a female Kuwaiti politician, Salwa al-Mutairi, also spoke out in favor of the Islamic practice of sexual slavery of non-Muslim women, emphasizing that the practice accorded with Islamic law and the parameters of Islamic morality.
A merchant told me that he would like to have a sex slave. He said he would not be negligent with her, and that Islam permitted this sort of thing. He was speaking the truth. I brought up [this man’s] situation to the muftis in Mecca. I told them that I had a question, since they were men who specialized in what was halal, and what was good, and who loved women. I said, “What is the law of sex slaves?”
The mufti said, “With the law of sex slaves, there must be a Muslim nation at war with a Christian nation, or a nation which is not of the religion, not of the religion of Islam. And there must be prisoners of war.”
“Is this forbidden by Islam?” I asked.
“Absolutely not. Sex slaves are not forbidden by Islam. On the contrary, sex slaves are under a different law than the free woman. The free woman must be completely covered except for her face and hands. But the sex slave can be naked from the waist up. She differs a lot from the free woman. While the free woman requires a marriage contract, the sex slave does not—she only needs to be purchased by her husband, and that’s it. Therefore the sex slave is different than the free woman.”
The savage exploitation of girls and young women is, unfortunately, a cross-cultural phenomenon, but only in Islamic law does it carry divine sanction.

The institution of slavery in Islam was formalized in the following Quranic verse, in which Allah distinguishes free human beings or masters, who exercise justice and righteousness, from the dumb, useless and burdensome ones, the slaves:
Quran 16:76
Allah sets forth (another) Parable of two men: one of them dumb, with no power of any sort; a wearisome burden is he to his master; whichever way he directs him, he brings no good: is such a man equal with one who commands Justice, and is on a Straight Way?
Allah warns the believers against taking the slaves as equal partner in status and in sharing their wealth, lest they have to fear them as anyone else:
Quran 30:28
…do ye have partners among those whom your right hands possess (i.e., slaves, captives) to share as equals in the wealth We have bestowed on you? Do ye fear them as ye fear each other?
Allah recognizes some human beings, namely the masters, as more blessed by Himself than the less favored slaves as part of His divine plan. He warns Muslims against sharing His gifts to them equally with their slaves. Those who would take slaves as equal, warns Allah, would deny Him:
Quran 16:71
Allah has bestowed His gifts of sustenance more freely on some of you than on others: those more favoured are not going to throw back their gifts to those whom their right hands possess, so as to be equal in that respect. Will they then deny the favours of Allah?
Allah does not only sanction the institution of slavery, He also gave divine blessing to masters (Muslim men only can own slaves) to have sex with the female slaves:
Quran 70:29–30
And those who guard their private parts, Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess—for these surely are not to be blamed
Quran 23:5–6
And who guard their private parts, except before their mates or those whom their right hands possess, for they surely are not blameable
Therefore, if there are women amongst the captives or slaves, Muslims are divinely sanctioned to have sex with them as they do with their wives. This verdict of Allah founded the institution of sex-slavery or slave-concubinage in Islam, which was widespread in the pre-colonial Muslim world and continued well into the mid-twentieth century. As far as legal marriage is concerned, there is a limitation of four wives for a man at one time [Quran 4:3], but no such limitation on the number of sex-slaves.
Allah also gave a divine sanction to Muslims for acquiring female slaves for sexual engagement by waging wars against the infidels:
Quran 33:50
O Prophet! surely We have made lawful to you your wives whom you have given their dowries, and those whom your right hand possesses out of those whom Allah has given to you as prisoners of war… [Quran 33:50]
Muslims can engage in sex with the captured slave women even if they are married, but not with the married free Muslim women:
Quran 4:24
Also (prohibited are) women already married, except those whom your right hands possess…
There are other verses in the Quran that talks approvingly of slaves and capturing them in wars. Thus, according to the divine commands of the Islamic God as enshrined in the holy Quran, Muslims are allowed to keep slaves. They can amass slaves by waging wars, have sex with the female slaves, and of course, use them as they wish. For Muslims, having sex with female slaves is as legal as having sex with their married wives. Slavery appears to be one of the most desired divine privileges in Islam, since Allah took the pain of reminding Muslims about this divine right time and again in so many verses.

If you really feel that way then you don’t know much about islamic orthodoxy. It’s not true that we can’t tell when each verse came to muhammad. Islam is not based on the quran alone, it also includes the sira (biography) of muhammad and the ahadith. Between the sira and the ahadith we can tell when pretty much every revelation came. The tolerant verses came during the Mecca and early Medina periods when muslims were a minority, while verses like the verse of the sword came later in muhammad’s life when he was, for all intents and purposes, a warlod with a large army.

There’s another Islamic scripture besides the Holy Ko-Ran, the Hah-Deaths. In that book of credibly witnessed and documented deeds and sayings of the Holy Prophet Mo-Hammed, we see that after Mo and his Companions were ejected from Mecca, they arrived in Yathrib and proceeded to do a long series of mass murders and large scale robberies. All this included, of course, thousands of women being pressed into sex slavery.

While there are inconsistencies in the Qur’an’s policies, its policy for dealing with non-Muslims who don’t accept Islam is at least broadly consistent, i.e., they are to be punished, opposed, resisted, deceived, humiliated, conquered, etc.
On the other hand, let’s consider the premise that the Qur’an is truly contradictory, with a ‘love them’ versus ‘hate them’ policy toward the non-Muslims. Well, since the ‘hate them’ part also involves aspects such as ‘kill them,’ ‘rape them,’ ‘enslave them,’ ‘subjugate them,’ ‘extort money and confiscate property from them,’ then out of our own responsible self-protective concern, we need pay attention to these harsh policies. Imagine you are dealing with someone who says “I love you, I’ll protect you, I’m peaceful,” and in the next minute says “I hate you and I’ll kill you,” then obviously the ‘love’ statements carry no positive weight; only the dangerous stuff concerns us. Indeed, if anything, the apparent ‘love’ stuff adds to the danger in this context with the threats, because such a person is likely especially psychologically disturbed (and especially preoccupied with us to boot–who needs this kind of “love”?!). Moreover, even if all the love-hate stuff is all an act, this still creates confusion and should put us on the alert. And so it is with non-Muslims’ sensible approach to the Qur’an: Take the threats seriously, no matter what else it says, since inconsistency of this sort is, at best, evidence of a psychologically disturbed author (and group of followers).
You quote part of a famous verse:

But the passage goes on, in the very next verse (2:257), to say that those who don’t accept Islam will be punished in hell. The Qur’an elsewhere says that Muslims will punish them in this life (e.g., 9:29, 9:123, etc.).

But the context indicates at least a few things:
(1) The passage can be taken as part of the “Satanic Verses” episode where Muhammad was allegedly guided by Satan to utter those words in sura 109. Needless to say, most Muslims reject this interpretation, even though the basis for it comes from early Muslim historians.
(2) The passage indicates what Ibn Kathir refers to as a “complete disavowal”, a rejection, of non-Muslim beliefs and ways. I.e., the verse is not an expression of tolerance, but of intolerance, a rigid adherence to Islamic monotheism and staunch rejection of all else as polytheism and kufr.
(3) In any case, because Muslims’ mode of opposition to disbelievers (kafirs) differs depending the respective strengths of the Muslims and non-Muslims, even if we take this verse as outwardly tolerant, the policy remains the same: oppose the non-Muslims, behave outwardly as though tolerant, until Muslims are stronger than the non-Muslims and no longer have to feign tolerance. Once Muslims are stronger and have the opportunity, it is incumbent upon them to “do the right thing”, Islamically speaking, and impose sharia, and wage jihad if the non-Muslims don’t agree to it.
3, “Whosoever will, let him believe and whosoever will, let him disbelieve.” (18:29)
If you’d quoted the complete verse (18:29), you’d see that this is a live-and-let-die policy, not live-and-let-live. The verse talks graphically about the torturous punishment in store for the non-Muslims who don’t accept Islam. More importantly, the Qur’an elsewhere is consistent in its policy that non-Muslims who don’t accept Islam will be punished not only in the afterlife but in this life also. Moreover, Muslims are assigned the task of delivering Allah’s punishment in this world, imposing sharia, and keeping the non-Muslims in check (2:251).

What makes you think they ignore them? More likely, they’ve read the whole book and have a nuanced understanding of its policy, particularly in light of the hadiths and Sira. If these guys were in the West, they’d either be pretending to be moderate or supporting or plotting terrorist attacks, etc. The leader of the IS reportedly has a doctorate in fiqh, meaning that he probably knows more about Islam than 99% of the western Muslim apologists. There isn’t anything that the IS has done that is clearly inconsistent with the Qur’an; whereas sexual slavery, crucifixions; slaughter, subjugation, imposition of the jizya; and slaughter of hypocrites, heretics, and apostates, etc., are all consistent with the Qur’an.

Perhaps not, but what’s important from a practical perspective is that Muslims think they have the context of the verses which allows them to establish a chronological order. The context they believe is found in the hadiths and Sira literature. Works of Asbab ul-Nuzul provide the contexts for the Qur’anic verses by linking them to the relevant contexts in which they were revealed. From this Muslim obtain (a) the story of Muhammad’s life in chronological sequence, and (b) Islamic law [i.e., the policies of Muhammad and his trusted companions], in all its detailed totalitarian comprehensiveness.

What do you mean, “but”? This is also absolutely mainstream Islam—there is even a specific doctrine for it—Takfir.
Through Takfir, any other-sect or lax Muslim—”heretic” or “apostate”—can be declared a virtual non-Muslim, and hence fair game just as an Infidel would be.

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I think first of all, the press still has a bit of a hang over from touting the “Muslims are victims” line for so long. I think most everyone has heard about Islamic doctrine regarding sex slavery, but it was always sort of like any other sex slavery, not officially condoned by the State.
We’ve never gotten to see the real deal, like we are getting to see with IS, the Caliphate.
I think the other reason is, our Muslims here will murder our general population in horrible ways if we do anything. We and our leaders here have to be ready and willing to pay the price to hit ISIS in the way you talk about. Potentially 10-25% of our Muslims here agree with ISIS & would “fight and die for the cause of Allah”.
I also think, like the Nazis, we have no other choice. The conflict is civilizational, there are no choices for us, that’s only an illusion of time and distance for now.

It is no understatement to say that this man saved Western Civilization from a treacherous Muslim hoard.
How is it humanly possible that Western Civilization does NOT remember and honor this man with yearly parades and celebrations?!?!?? Why was he NOT the subject of my studies in history class in high school??!?

Without Sobieski actions, there would be no Mozart, no Blackstone, no Locke, hence no Jefferson, no Madison, et al. The devastating nature of the consequences are hard to calculate. The Ottoman empire was truly intent on conquering Europe, and very nearly did.
Please, if you cherish your freedom, if you’ve ever sipped a cappuccino while listening to Mozart in the security of a free market system that is secured by a constitutional republic with democratically-elected representatives, then you owe it, fundamentally, to Sobieski. Sobieski was fluent in French, German, Italian, Latin, and Turkish, and was an accomplished diplomat. He possessed immense military experience, and obtained most of his victories against numerically superior foes. In battle, he personally led his men, who adored him, and was second to none in bravery or killing prowess. His imposing physical presence and reputation commanded a respect that even partisans in the Sejm grudgingly acknowledged. He was a happily-married family man who wrote to his wife almost every day for 20 years.

His amazingly timed (and urgently needed) rescue of Vienna was a stunning victory that sent shockwaves through the Muslim army, which was planning to tunnel under the walls of Vienna with explosives.
Also, be sure to read the letter that Sobieski sent to his wife, written from the ruins of Kara Mustafa’s tent after the victory. (You’ll find it in italics about 3/4 of the way down)
He genuinely believed that Western Civilization was threatened and was willing to risk his life in its defense.
I have printed a t-shirt with his picture and name on it, and I wear it proudly every August 17, in gratitude to what he did to make my life wonderful.

Bach was born early in 1685: just barely *two years after* Sobieski’s victory at Vienna that turned the tide against the Turkish manifestation of the Ummah.
I have sometimes thought that the way to end an epic film about Sobieski’s victory would be to include the following short vignette at the end of the credits. As one of Bach’s loveliest pieces begins to play on the soundtrack (perhaps, “Sheep May Safely Graze”), the camera pans in on a small 17th century German town in early spring [text across the bottom of the screen reads “Eisenach, Saxe-Eisenach, spring 1685], tracking in and down and along the street to the church, where a nice upper-middle-class German family are having their latest baby – indeed, their eighth – baptised. And the very last words you hear spoken in the film, while the music that that tiny baby would one day grow up to compose is flowing all around the cinema, are these: “I baptise thee, Johann Sebastian Bach, in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit”.
