Israel’s initial goal in Operation Protective Edge had been to destroy Hamas utterly. But Barack Obama persuaded (how?) the Israelis to accept Hamas still existing, and still heavily armed.
It is quite clear which side Barack Obama is on.
“PLO to pursue diplomatic efforts following ceasefire deal,” Ma’an News Agency, August 28, 2014:
BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — The Palestinian leadership will pursue diplomatic efforts at the UN Security Council in a bid to end Israel’s decades-long occupation following a ceasefire deal in Gaza, a senior Fatah official said late Wednesday.
Nabil Shaath told Ma’an that the PLO would first submit an application to the UN Security Council on Sept. 15 demanding a “timetable” for Israel’s withdrawal from the occupied Palestinian territory.
The Arab League will meet on Sept. 5 to discuss how to support the move.
If that request is denied, the PLO will take their case to the International Criminal Court to hold senior Israeli officials such as Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon accountable for Israel’s devastating assault on Gaza, which killed over 2,000 Palestinians.
“Taking the case to the ICC is conditional upon the Security Council response to our request,” Shaath said, adding that the issue is being discussed within Palestinian political circles.
A permanent unity government, with Hamas as a full partner, will then be formed in order to facilitate the reconstruction of the war-torn Gaza Strip, Shaath added.
Palestinian and Israeli delegations will meet at a later date in Cairo to agree on the procedures for operating Gaza’s crossings.
Shaath said that Israel accepted the ceasefire deal without the demilitarization of Hamas following pressure from the United States.

I worry that we in the West are our own worst enemies when it comes to the Muslim encroachment on civilization.
President Clinton bombed the Bosnian Serbs, who were responding, not always in a nice manner, to Muslim aggression.
President Carter withheld support from the Shah of Iran, causing him to lose control of the country and ultimately, enable the Revolutionary Islamist government.
President Bush, for no real reason that wasn’t manufactured by the Bush administration, toppled the regime of Saddam Hussein, throwing Iraq into an anarchy that first made it practically a puppet of Iran, then a helpless victim of the ISIS offensive.
President Obama gave US support to the toppling of the Mubarak government in Egypt, the Gadaffi government in Libya, and the Assad government in Syria, every such action leading to the advancement of the Islamist agenda.
The European Union makes it difficult for member countries to close their borders to immigration, of Muslims in particular .
I’m projecting, but I don’t have any doubt that if violence should break out between Muslims and non-Muslims in any European country, the EU bureaucracy will encourage outside armies to suppress the fighting, should the non-Muslims begin to get the upper hand.
In all cases, the Islamic agenda advanced because of an explicit action by Western governments to dismantle a functioning barrier to the advancement of Muslim control, immigration, and sharia law.
I fear the Western governments more than I do the actual Islamists.

Very good contextual summary.
In each case the West is retreating rather than pushing for the adoption of our values.
It is the “post-colonial” narrative, which presents all the negative aspects of Western colonization without showing the positive aspects.
The greatest democracies on earth were all once British colonies. Not one Islamic country can be described as either democratic or even functioning.

“….What could have been done differently? Well imagine if all the explosives that were dropped on Gaza during 50 days of fighting were dropped in the first five days of fighting. Instead of a lone fighter sent to hit a single objective, waves of fighters were sent to hit multiple objectives simultaneously. Suppose this massive aerial onslaught was followed by a commensurately large artillery barrage to cover a land invasion from the north and east and a marine-borne assault form the west…
Yes, there would be casualties, but that is what warriors in a democratic society do – put themselves in harm’s way so that civilians are not.
In a recent paper (Wise Tactical Choices in Gaza) my good friend Maj.-Gen. (res.) Yaakov Amidror, former national security adviser, wrote that Israel could not have launched such a preemptive strike and retain international legitimacy. There are a myriad of reasons to dispute this claim, but even if it were true, it comprises perhaps the most severe indictment of the Netanyahu incumbency.
For after being in power continuously for over half-a-decade it has done nothing to put in place mechanisms/ systems to contend with the foreknown hostility of the Obama administration and to establish the legitimacy of the Jews right to self-defense – including the right to preempt aggression…..

You speak a great deal of truth, wildjew. Yes, Netanyahu is indeed “a man of great talent and considerable achievement” but, as you averred, he still “hesitated.”
Israel should no longer hesitate at all. It needs a “Netanyahu and then some.” Not only for Israel’s sake but for all of Western Civilization’s sake, I hope such a person exists in Israel. As for Obama, as Albert Einstein said of those who attempted to claim that he had stolen his ideas from some Prussian scientist, he is beneath contempt.
Though not Jewish myself, I still think of myself as a Zionist. I wish far more did. Better for Israel. Better for liberty. Better for all of Western Civilization. They’re all meshed together. Those who don’t see this are either ignorant or malevolent. The only possible debate about Obama here is whether he is guilty of the former or the latter. Certainly no one of sense could claim he is a wise man. Far from it in fact. Very far actually.
Long live Israel. Take care, wildjew.

I am not religious in the least, Ron, but I look upon Christianity and Judaism as enlightened religions, contra Islam, and ones which work wonderfully well with democratic tenets because of the emphasis both place upon the dignity and worth of the individual.

I’m sorry, but you write as if acting totally and decisively is simply a matter of fortitude by the Israeli leaders. Machiavelli advised the prince who had to take over a city, province, or country to do his dirty work all at once, and not draw it out over a period of time. The sooner it’s over with, the sooner the people will forget.
But, you have to pose that against the reality that Israel is isolated in the world, not only by the 57 Islamic nations, but by almost all the major European countries, who consistently either vote to condemn Israel, or abstain. The US often provides the veto on the Security Council.
What would happen if a resolution of boycott or sanctions passed the Security Council? Israel would be effectively isolated, and it would last for years.
What would happen if the US stopped weapons delivery to Israel during or right before a shooting war involving Hamas, Hezbollah, and perhaps Iran, with armored forces from ISIS thrown in to boot? Israel has superior armies, but it is a fantasy to believe Israel will easily defeat Arab armies. And, if Israel runs out of ammunition, with no US resupply, they can set off all the nukes they want: the Muslim armies are becoming more dispersed, and the forces actually overrunning Israeli positions may not be affected by the nuking of Arab capitols.
I don’t believe it’s realistic to expect Israel to thumb its nose at US leaders.

Maybe, just maybe, and my chair was never leaning against the wall in the correct [avoiding the use of the word “right”] office, nor was “my source” monitoring the telephone calls, but methinks that Netanyahu may’ve been offered a deal he didn’t want to refuse taking all into consideration.
Let’s trust that Netanyahu, being infinitely more experienced and overall more savvy that our amateur Obama, still has more leverage than Obama thinks that he himself has [or that ear-wig schemer Jarrett].
Obama is first of all a very nasty, devious politician, but the rest of the World’s experienced nasty, devious politicians/manipulators [read, diplomats] are leaving Obama alone, or at least at arm’s length, because they think he’s not worth their effort. Obama is short term dangerous, but he’s simply not up to international standards. More worldly guys know this.
Isolationism works in many ways. Who is actually isolating who? […m?] This deadly chess game is never really over. New strategies are always being needed/adjusted/adapted as advances and mistakes are made.
Netanyahu doesn’t make mistakes, that we hear about. He’s always had so very little or no margin for error. I wish he were our president. I mean that.
I’m an old man. I remember as a teenager reading with pride about Cordell Hull’s undisguised, visceral fury at the Japanese. As far as liberal Democrats go, we could use right now another one of those quiet, shy, shrinking violets of a liberal like Franklin Roosevelt.
Phooey on today’s “diplomats”. They’re so full of themselves. If we must have a Democrat right now, lets channel Dean Rusk. Any one remember him?, his own visceral fury at dGaulle?
Cheer up, all. We’ve come through worse.

Israel accepted ceasefire without demilitarization of Hamas under US pressure
………………………………….
I hate to say it, but this does not surprise. After all, who today would make sure that they *had* demilitarized? The UN? Don’t count on it.
Of course, the US could do it—but right now, they don’t have the leadership. And Israel, of course, could do it as well—but in this insane political climate the ‘outrage’ would be off the charts if they actually put large numbers of troops on the ground in Gaza.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — The Palestinian leadership will pursue diplomatic efforts at the UN Security Council in a bid to end Israel’s decades-long occupation following a ceasefire deal in Gaza, a senior Fatah official said late Wednesday.
………………………………….
Of course, Israel hasn’t “occupied” Gaza since 2005—when the unilaterally pulled out as a bid for peace. How’s that worked out? sarc/off
And even though Hamas lost the war by any rational yardstick, in the end they have won—and are putting the question of Israel’s “occupation” of the “West Bank” on the table.
Of course, Israel only retains a presence in the “West Bank” because Muslims continue to use it as a base from which to wage violent Jihad against Israel.
If Israel is pushed out, who is to protect her from the ravening Mohammedans? This, especially since there is now a “unity government”, and Hamas doesn’t even maintain the fake fig leaf of “moderation” that Fatah does.
Certainly not the UN:
“Islamic jihadists capture 43 UN peacekeepers in Golan Heights”
http://www.jihadwatch.org/2014/08/islamic-jihadists-capture-43-un-peacekeepers-in-golan-heights
And this is just their being inept. Far worse, they are often actively complicit, as well:
“Hamas and Islamic Jihad fully control UN agency for ‘Palestinian’ ‘refugees’”
http://www.jihadwatch.org/2014/08/hamas-and-islamic-jihad-fully-control-un-agency-for-palestinian-refugees
The fact is that Israel will not be able to defend herself from Jihad attacks at all if forced back to her 1967 borders.
In fact, the 1967 war was started by Muslims who realized this. Of course, Israel kicked their asses.

………………………………….
The fact that Israel has built her security fence and controls the crossings into Israel is the *only* reason that suicide bombings and other Jihad attacks have been so diminished in recent years.
Jihadists would like nothing better than to see Israel exposed to more ravening Jihad attacks.

I like Natanyahu and respect him. He is not perfect. He has in the past released Terrorists with blood on their hands for “Peace talks”. I thought that was foolish. I think Europe is full of Antisemitism and the media is against Israel. The pressure is great. Jews do not like killing anyone, even their enemies. Jews in the UK and France are being overwhelmed by Muslim extremism. He was not sure what would come next if he destroyed or disarmed Hamas. The Gaza population are largely committed to Hamas and are willing to die to kill Jews. Maybe he was satisfied with having targeted and killed many significant Hamas leaders and that goal was enough. The threat of another front emerging from the North, Judea and Samaria is problematic.
