Sharia Saudi Arabia: Prison, lashes for woman who criticized morality police

Aug 17, 2014 12:58 pm By Robert Spencer

niqabis“It said the patrol had entered her cafe to check there were no breaches of morality or other laws in the conservative Muslim kingdom, and that some of her employees had then run away because they were breaking immigration rules.” Not that oppressing women and non-Muslims and imprisoning and lashing people for speaking out is “conservative,” but that’s the mainstream media for you. In any case, this incident shows in a microcosm what happens to the freedom of speech in a Sharia state.

“Lashes for Saudi woman who called morality police liars: newspaper,” Reuters, August 17, 2014:

RIYADH (Reuters) – A Saudi Arabian judge has upheld a sentence of a month in prison and 50 lashes for a businesswoman convicted of insulting members of the morality police during an argument, the local al-Medina newspaper reported on Sunday.

Incidents of heavy-handed behavior by the morality police have come under growing criticism on social media from inside the kingdom in recent years, straining relations between Saudi citizens and the official body.

The appeals court in Mecca upheld the sentence, passed by a district court in Jeddah, after the woman was found guilty of “cursing the morality police” and calling them “liars”, the Arabic-language daily reported.

It said the patrol had entered her cafe to check there were no breaches of morality or other laws in the conservative Muslim kingdom, and that some of her employees had then run away because they were breaking immigration rules.

The morality police, formally called the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, was set up in 1926 to monitor public behavior in Saudi Arabia, which follows the strict Wahhabi school of Sunni Islam.

It patrols streets and other public spaces such as shopping malls enforcing strict dress codes and 30-minute store closures during Islam’s noon, afternoon, sunset and evening prayers.

In 2012 King Abdullah sacked the head of the religious police after a series of controversies including footage of members harassing families in a shopping mall going viral online and fatal crashes after patrols engaged in car chases with suspects.

SLOW TO CHANGE

The new head, Sheikh Abdulatif Al al-Sheikh, has publicly pushed a more conciliatory approach, talking about training sessions for the morality police to ensure they are politer and do not exceed their legal powers.

However, the force has still been embroiled in a series of controversies over the past two years including more fatal car chases.

Saudi Arabia’s Sharia justice system gives extensive control to judges who can base their verdicts and sentencing on their own interpretation of religious texts rather than using official sentencing guidelines or a system of precedent.

King Abdullah and Justice Minister Mohammed al-Issa have pushed reforms aimed at standardizing sentencing, but analysts say implementation has been slow as conservative judges and officials in the Justice Ministry have blocked change.

        You go girl!!!! Thank the Lord every day that I was born in the U.S., which is a lot less free than it used to be, but still way more free than muslim women. The only part of your note I take issue with, is they don’t die mercifully at 11 or 12 they go on to have a much larger number of births and repopulate this awful culture with girls who will be abused by men who are legally allowed to abuse them. Look at Europe. With the declining birthrate of Europeans, by 2030 Muslims will manage to vote in Sharia by their numbers alone. Islam is unfortunately the “perfect” religion for resisting change. Recipe: No one can question anything that is written and uneducated women mean subjugation and abuse in perpetuity which equals no change!! Sad and for us infidels —- dangerous

  8. RonaldB says

    Aug 17, 2014 at 4:49 pm

    We shouldn’t be too quick to condemn Saudi Arabia. There are many beneficial aspects to it.

    First of all, chance are we would have to give our ex-Presidents more in severance pay without Saudi Arabia. With George Bush in particular, with the money he and his family received through Saudi connections, we might have been able to do away with Bush’s pension altogether. And, of course, I’m being vague as to which Bush I’m talking about.

    Second, Saudi Arabia has called the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization. That took a lot of courage, as it caused untold complexities for people like Huma Abedin, with family feet firmly planted in both the Muslim Brotherhood and in Saudi academia. Once the FBI is able to pronounce the words “Muslim Brotherhood” (not a sure bet, even under a Republican administration), Saudi Arabia may even be considered an ally for certain very limited purposes.

    Should we care how Saudi Arabia treats its women? Unfortunately, feminine power in Saudi Arabia (or any other Muslim country) simply means more manpower (excuse the term) available to subvert Western freedoms. Muslim women may have an understandable aversion to being butchered by their fathers or husbands, but that doesn’t mean they are allies of freedom by any means.

    And most of all, Saudi Arabia serves as a counterweight to Iran. Iran is a revolutionary government (except when it comes to preserving its own power) and the Saudi government is deeply conservative (in the truest sense). Even our muddle-headed State Department should be able to get the Iran – Saudi tensions right.

    • Kathy Brown says

      Aug 17, 2014 at 6:46 pm

      Hahahahahahaha Ronald! There’s nothing I can disagree with there!

      And I loved ‘pronounce Muslim Brotherhood’-you’re so right.

      I esp. like your take on the female Mu-Slimes. Indeed we should not trust them either, tho’ they undoubtedly got the fuzzy end of the lollipop. When you’re abused as horrifically as these women are, from birth? You’re one sick puppy by the time you’re an adult. And the pattern is, the abused become abusers themselves…

      By no means do I wish to exclude the men from the category of abused. Since I’m not-God be praised-a feminazi, I don’t buy the poor-poor-womyn-they’re-
      never-responsible-for-anything idiocy. And of course the men have all the power under the Sharia. But little boys raised to torture animals, hatehatehate, consider women subhuman and kill themselves in jihad when they attain majority? They, too, are victims…

      NB: Before anyone here gets REALLY upset over my calling Muslims ‘victims’, rest assured that, notwithstanding the foregoing, I understand we have to kill them all since their cultural abuse creates murdering savages who are our #1 enemy.

      • RonaldB says

        Aug 17, 2014 at 8:21 pm

        Kathy,

        Thank you for your kind words.

        I have to disagree fervently when you say, concerning Muslims “I understand we have to kill them all…” I don’t want to kill or hurt Muslims anymore than I want to kill or hurt anyone else. In fact, one of my arguments against the kind of stupid intervention (is there any other type?) perpetrated by Eisenhower, Carter, Bush, Obama is that by instituting a state of anarchy where previously there existed a functioning government , however vicious, many more Muslims are killed by other Muslims.

        We can avoid conflict with Muslims in our countries by simply not importing them. As Islam is totally incompatible with science, it is not too difficult to maintain strong borders and keep Muslim countries penned up. It’s true that Muslims will kill other Muslims, but that’s not our affair…and chances are, if we let the governments alone, there will be a few horrific killings and those fanatics not caught in the initial massacre will decide discretion is the better part of valor.

        The worst mistake we can make is to become identified with some government in a Middle Eastern country. The people working in government support function, like the police, will be identified as our allies, and marked for extermination. The US will be pressured to admit them, and their children will be indistinguishable from the children of their persecutors, in terms of fanaticism and devotion to Islam.

        In sum, I do not want Muslims to be killed, and I object strongly to any action by the US government which results in Muslims being killed when they are not invading other countries. Of course, selling arms to Israel is part of maintaining good boundaries with Muslim countries, and results in no Muslim deaths when the Muslims stay in their own territory.

        • Kathy Brown says

          Aug 17, 2014 at 10:03 pm

          We’re on the same page Ron.

          I meant by ‘kill them all’, all the jihadists. Pre-emptively. Our one concern, our one question, should be: ‘How does what the Muslims are doing impact the security of the USA?’. Just as Britain should have squashed Hitler long before they/we did? In like manner, Islam. And I meant suspending the idiotic ROE’s favored by both Bush and Zero. We should fight a war as we fought WWII.
          Dresden, Hamburg: These are important lessons, yes? And this works-remember Qaddafi after we bombed him? 25 yrs. of crickets…

          And esp. with the Muslims-they don’t observe rules of war, like the Japs then, like Hamas now? Thus we are absolved.

          I do think we’ll end by forbidding Islam in the USA. I mean, there’s precedent for this constitutionally (i.e., Communists, etc.). That’s if we last long enough to utterly purge the PC.

          As for nation-building: These societies know only fanaticism or dictatorships; if they wanted democracy they’d have it. Alas! All we can do is pray for them!

          Finally: I say ‘Muslims’ purposefully Ron. This endless ‘qualifying’ (‘Militants’, ‘Insurgents’, ”Islamists’, yada yada yada) is enough already. The violent Muslims must be killed when they war on us, and the ‘good Muslims’ do/say nothing. Of course we can’t tell the difference! How long are we going to twist ourselves in knots ‘accommodating’ them? Thus all would be banned.

          As Americans we are shocked when we hear ‘forbid Muslims’. But we’ve come a long way since 9/11 Ron, haven’t we?

          “We can avoid conflict with Muslims in our countries by simply not importing them.”

          I believe that the immigration interview of a prospective Muslim immigrant to the West, should be conducted by an interviewer of the opposite gender. To prove that the immigrant is capable of treating such a person as an equal without fuss, in situations where one has to deal with whoever is available. For example, a medical emergency.

          Thus, a Muslim man would meet with a woman who’s wearing regular Western attire, no hijab. A Muslim woman would meet with a man, and she could wear hijab but not a veil.

    Hmmm……a Morality Police in a ‘deeply conservative’ Muslim country. Is rape permissible in a deeply conservative community? It has been written that in some accounts of this type of women abuse is punishable by death….death to the one been raped, but the rape-tor is given a pass. What god will allow such a law? Under this law doesn’t women rank equally as men? Perhaps, at the beginnings of creation women were created different. In the Judeo-Christian concept of God’s creation of both man and woman; they were created in His Own Image, by His Word, so man and woman created and valued equally in this sense. Is it the same in Islam’s creation account or this behavioral aberration is it just a cultural thing?

    • jay says

      Aug 18, 2014 at 3:37 am

      Since Islam is a cult pretending to be a branch of Judeo-Christian theology, it *sort of* borrows off the biblical stories, but not really. The Koran says very little about creation and it’s scattered (I think it mentioned mud and sperm and blood clot? ugh) and contradicts the biblical parts it steals. Women are generally only mentioned to be reinforced how inferior she is or how to ‘deal’ with her.

      Because the Koran is nothing more than a cult to keep people in control, always has been, always will be. It shares nothing with Judeo-Christianity or any other major religion. It is so haphazardly put together with so much contradicting each other, along with all these loopholes and ‘laws’ on how to read it and then, it’s a literal document!! Like oh sure, who with an actual education would fall for this for a second as a holy document from the same God the Bible has. It explains why most muslims are poor, uneducated and isolated people. There’s no revelations, spirituality, personal growth, communal love and charity; just a psycho’s guide to life according to him. Which includes screwing 10 year old boys and girls. And I hate studying it it literally feels like I’m reading what Satan created. And I’m not even religious really.

      It takes two to tango, yes?

      Women in every culture have tremendous power, do they unite. I mean, it’s not as if the men-who profit by their oppression-are going to wake up some morning and say, ‘Wow! It’s just not right that we clitoridectomize/rape/stone/flog/disenfranchise the ladies! It stops today!’.

      Of course there would be a bloodbath at first. But in the end, the women would prevail. To paraphrase Gandhi: ‘1/2 the population simply can’t rule the other 1/2, when that 1/2 doesn’t cooperate.’.

    All,

    Morality police is not really a bad concept …certainly it has been badly implemented and maybe for the wrong purpose in the screwed up Saud.

    It is implemented at too basic a level …looking for a bit of hair or an ankle showing is just a nonsense ….it should be more about raising fine fit women who are educated to make a difference to society in general and indeed that includes religious studies.

    But what I mean is that e.g. you see a fat dog ….a woman who is too fat …then she needs help….and that means getting the appropriate gym training, dietician etc to help her be nice for her shor (husband).

    It is the Saud that give the morality police a bad name …and not the other way round.

    Where I think that the morality police could make a huge beneficial change is actually in the West. There could be a morality police minister who has the power to ensure fairness, and tolerance…answerable to parliament.

    The UK and US certainly has a problem with fat women, their excesses… weight, drinking, drugs, unreasonable behavior on Friday nights, dwindling church attendances, neglect of children, sex outside of marriage …I mean the list is almost endless for the western women.

    In many cases there is just a bit of TLC required, sometimes a little bit of control and discipline ….government sponsored gyms for the needy ….where the morality police take the couch potato heads to the gym….because that is where they need to be.

    In a sense I guess there is little harm in bringing back some of the Victorian values back into the women’s lives …because that was when they were honorable….and if they insist on behaving badly …well there could be certain privileges that would be withdrawn.. you know …like the right to vote …until they start to behave properly.

    It could save the government millions in revenue, less divorces, broken homes and you get for a much better behaved society …because ultimately women are the mothers who do the cooking cleaning and bring up the children to be well mannered.

    Ofcourse as a muslimah …I do all these things naturally..as my mother herself had taught me to be an holnourable woman… and as such we have little of these discipline problems.

    Hope you JWers agree that this is a good idea.

      I’ll point out the obvious, Rezali.

      What you want is a bunch of people running around enforcing with the threat of jail and felony sanctions, what most people think of as matters of personal conscience and self-discipline. You want a morality police to take overweight people to the gym, in spite of what they want. You want to police to monitor what people watch on tv. You want police to determine how people express their sexuality. You want police to enforce church attendance.

      And then, you make a comment about how self-disciplined you are as a Muslima. We know that Islam enforces its provisions by murder, horrific tortures, and a legal system which allows and demands the murder of apostates, non-dhimmis, and disobedient children, particularly women who wish any sort of independent judgment on how they act or who they marry. So, with all this terror and murder enforcing the provisions of Islam, how did you learn the self-discipline you compliment yourself for?

      We non-Muslims feel that individuals should be responsible for their own behavior, that self-discipline can only be learned through the possibility of failure, that some things are best left to the individual, even if the individual makes bad choices. The essence of freedom is to be able to make bad choices in personal matters.

      So, tell me how much freedom you have as a Muslima.

        Hello RonaldB,

        In some senses I am saying here that the morality police is not a bad idea… and it does not have to be implemented using any of the rules/”punishments” put forward by Islam. …just take the idea and re-implement it.

        Kuffar taking it on may even show success such that the country’s resources i.e. the national health bill reduced, courts cases reduced, marriages saved, happier children, slimmer and healthier women etc…
        all making for a more successful country.

        Only the idea is pinched from Islam… rest is up for grabs…and there is no need for the violence et al….what say you?

        ……………………………….

        “The screwed up Saud”—once again, Rezali Mehil wants to give the idea that the only problem is with Sunnis.

        But the fact is that the morality police in the Islamic Republic of Iran—which is Shia just as is Rezali Mehil herself—is almost *identical* to this bunch in Arabia.

        And why not? They share the same Qur’an, and the same baleful “Prophet”.

        http://midnightwatcher.wordpress.com/2014/05/22/iran-religious-police-arrests-six-for-being-happy/

        So—what is the ‘right purpose’ for the “morality police”?:

        It is implemented at too basic a level …looking for a bit of hair or an ankle showing is just a (sic) nonsense ….it should be more about raising fine fit women who are educated to make a difference to society in general and indeed that includes religious studies.
        ……………………………….

        Doesn’t Rezali Mehil realize the irony here? The only reason *she* isn’t being flogged for criticizing the morality police as the poor woman above is is because she is living in the free West—but she is intent on turning it into the same sort of hell-hole as Dar-al-Islam.

        And this is yet more proof that Muslims understand *nothing* about freedom. Here this pious Muslimah is flogging the idea (pun intended) that police should be used to force citizens to study Islam and to remain “fit”.

        More:

        But what I mean is that e.g. you see a fat dog ….a woman who is too fat …then she needs help….and that means getting the appropriate gym training, dietician etc to help her be nice for her shor (husband).

        “Help”—ah, yes, and that “help” would come in the form of savage misuse of government power.

        (An aside, but an interesting one—some before have speculated that Rezali Mehil is the banned Naseem—and this may be so. She is the only one I ever saw refer to a husband as a “shor”.)

        More:

        It is the Saud that give the morality police a bad name …and not the other way round.
        ……………………………….

        Hilarious—the “morality police” are vile wherever they are found—including as used by Shi’ites.

        ……………………………….

        The “morality police” have *nothing* to do with “fairness and tolerance”. The mere idea that these thugs have anything to do with those two concepts is grimly laughable.

        More:

        The UK and US certainly has a problem with fat women, their excesses… weight, drinking, drugs, unreasonable behavior on Friday nights, dwindling church attendances, neglect of children, sex outside of marriage …I mean the list is almost endless for the western women.
        ……………………………….

        “Dwindling church attendances” is especially hilarious, given that Rezali Mehil’s vile coreligionists are bombing and destroying churches all over the world.

        And this nasty Muslimah understands *nothing* about Christianity—Christians, unlike Muslims, don’t force people to attend church. This is something freely undertaken by devout Christians.

        But note that this is a major part of what the “morality police” are doing in Muslim countries—forcing businesses to close during Islamic prayer times, and fining, imprisoning, and beating people who don’t observe Ramadan. There is no real piety in Dar-al-Islam, because such “piety” is enforced—quite literally.

        What crap—Rezali Mehil is hoping this is an issue that will be less repellant to decent Infidels than what these police would *really* be used for—but this is still grotesquely oppressive.

        And this is also laughable—thanks to Western agrarian advances, Dar-al-Islam is *full of fat people*. The “Palestinian Territories” has the fourth fattest population in the world.

        But then, this isn’t really about fat people at all…

        More:

        In a sense I guess there is little harm in bringing back some of the Victorian values back into the women’s lives …because that was when they were honorable….and if they insist on behaving badly …well there could be certain privileges that would be withdrawn.. you know …like the right to vote …until they start to behave properly.
        ……………………………….

        What an evil bint. The only reason we *got* the vote is because we refused to “behave properly”.

        But then, pious Muslims don’t believe in real democracy, either—as Rezali Mehil proves here.

        More:

        It could save the government millions in revenue, less divorces, broken homes and you get for a much better behaved society …because ultimately women are the mothers who do the cooking cleaning and bring up the children to be well mannered.
        ……………………………….

        “Well mannered”—this means ready to wage violent Jihad. And Rezali Mehil doesn’t mention here what she deems appropriate for any women who *don’t* “behave”—but she has lauded “Honor Killing” for “disobedient” women many times here. *Ugh*.

        More:

        Ofcourse as a muslimah …I do all these things naturally..as my mother herself had taught me to be an holnourable woman… and as such we have little of these discipline problems.
        ……………………………….

        For her, being an “honorable woman” includes luring disobedient family members into “Honor Killings”—*ugh*.

        More:

        Hope you JWers agree that this is a good idea.
        ……………………………….

        No, sorry—we’re civilized Infidels here.

        More, to Ronald B:

        Hello RonaldB,

        In some senses I am saying here that the morality police is not a bad idea… and it does not have to be implemented using any of the rules/”punishments” put forward by Islam. …just take the idea and re-implement it.
        ……………………………….

        More “creeping Shari’ah”—sickening…

        More:

        Kuffar taking it on may even show success such that the country’s resources i.e. the national health bill reduced, courts cases reduced, marriages saved, happier children, slimmer and healthier women etc…
        all making for a more successful country.
        ……………………………….

        “A more successful country”—also grimly laughable. Britain *is* a successful country, and Rezali Mehil wants to turn it into a backward, stagnant, Dark Ages sh*t hole, just like countries in the Muslim world. *Disgusting*.

        More:

        Only the idea is pinched from Islam… rest is up for grabs…and there is no need for the violence et al….what say you?
        ……………………………….

        More crap. Police have to be able to resort to force, or else they are not police—just people who make suggestions.

        If police are able to use force to prevent violent crime, this is civilized. If they are using force—and in the Muslim world, this is bloody, barbaric violence—to coerce people to toe the Muslim line.

        More:

        More, in reply to Duh Swami:

        And do your nudists have a pen handy?

        Kuffara are well short of the mark from the Muslima at the moment …
        ……………………………….

        Rezali Mehil is so humor challenged that she cannot tell that Duh Swami is joking here.

        But more—even if what she takes at face value *were* true, Infidels would still be *far* more moral than are pious Muslmahs.

        I consider nudism rather silly—but there is nothing evil about it.

        But pious Muslimahs, who raise their children as violent Jihadists, and who gleefully lure their relatives for “Honor Killings”, and who sell their little girls to old men to be raped (as Rezali Mehil has also championed many times)—now *that* is evil.

        I’ll take innocent nudists any day of the week…

          Yes GI: You nailed that.

          This creature is a Mu-Slime troll, and as you say: Anyone who’d raise her boys to kill themselves while murdering innocents, give her daughters to be raped as children, and defend Is-Slime?

          Well…’nuff said.

          Champ: I forgot to mention, GI’s post WAS hilarious! And heaven knows we need a bit of levity from time to time, given the horrors we examine here.

          God be with us all, and with the family of the brave journalist James Foley. As we all undoubtedly know, he is the latest victim of the Religion from Hell itself.

      Do you live in a pretty little house with a very high wall around it? Do you skip around your neat little garden humming sweet little tunes? Do you play on your little tree swing squealing “Higher! Higher!”? Do you sit on your lovely little lawn making dainty little daisy chains? Do you……wait a second…..I think I’m going to vomit….

      Muslima: ‘Fat dog’=’fat woman’?

      Of course the judges here would be all men, yes? And the judged, the women?

      If you’re raped, what do you do?

      Can YOU beat YOUR ‘husband’ (owner)? Or just the other way around?

      I think this woman’s a plant. Stinkweed.

    These are such vile people. They set themselves up above others and tell them how to live and what to do!! They are lost themselves, they don’t know what they are doing. Evil, very evil people. They are vile, they look for ways to hurt people. They are vulgar too. They tell these poor women what to do while they make it okay for them to rape little boys dressed as girls, what the heck is wrong with them???? EVIL, that is simple.

    The morality police would be overworked around here.
    During the summer people run around naked at the local river, and half naked in town. There are lots of bars, and the behavior in some of them is awe full, they are drinking, and dancing to live music, and no one is wearing a head scarf. I spend a lot of time at that river giving nudists lectures on family values. Sometimes they take notes.

        “rezali mehil” reveals her perverted mindset with this question:

        And do your nudists have a pen handy?

        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        Better question: was your prophet a sexual pervert? ..uh, YES!!!
        …hard to top that one, right, sweetie pie?
        In fact, if muhammad saw a nude woman on a beach, well, he would rape her right then and there, and think that he was doing allah’s good work. Wow whatta Perfect Man he was! …pfft!!!
        Well, “rezali’s” prophet was a pervert, so it stands to reason that she is.
        Much more later …
    There are no free speech and no freedom of expression in the muslim countries. This is why islam is so very corrupt and so very evil. Even an ex-muslim told me a long time ago, not to trust muslims and he is definitely right.
    Sharia Saudi Arabia: Prison, lashes for woman who criticized morality police
    Incidents of heavy-handed behavior by the morality police have come under growing criticism…
    …………………………….
    The *very existence* of the “morality police” is “heavy-handed”.
    Just like “Blasphemy” laws, the actions of the “morality police” are subject to abuse, be cause they are inherently abusive.
    And Saudi Arabia is *hardly* the only stretch of Dar-al-Islam with “morality police”.
    Iran and the new Islamic State have then, as well.
    And pious Muslims have set up ad-hoc patrols in the West, as well, where pious thugs threaten both their fellow Muslims and Infidels for such things as not wearing Hijab, drinking alcohol, and eating during Ramadan.
    In Sweden, they have gone so far as to set up road-blocks, stopping every car that comes through.
    I doubt many Westerners understand that these “police” are based on ones that have the power to imprison, flog, and even murder their victims.
