This will be interesting. Will these forces actually do what they have to do to topple the Islamic State, or will they be hampered by impossible politically correct rules of engagement that hamstring their ability to do much of anything beyond act as a shooting gallery for local jihadis, as in Afghanistan?
And will Muslim Brotherhood groups in the U.S. such as Hamas-linked CAIR that have issued vague and pro-forma denunciations of the Islamic State applaud this attempt to “smash” it, or will they start whining about the victimization of Iraqi civilians and disproportionate force?
“SAS and US special forces forming hunter killer unit to ‘smash Islamic State,'” by Aaron Sharp, Mirror, August 23, 2014:
Elite British and US special forces troops are forming a hunter killer unit called Task Force Black – its orders: “Smash the Islamic State.”
The undercover warriors will aim to “cut the head off the snake” by hitting the command structure of the Islamist terror group responsible for a trail of atrocities across Iraq and Syria, reports the Sunday People.
PM David Cameron has told the SAS and UK spy agencies to direct all their resources at defeating IS after a video of US journalist James Foley being beheaded shocked the world.
British special forces will work with America’s Delta Force and Seal Team 6. The move sees a rebirth of top secret Task Force Black, which helped defeat al-Qaeda terrorists in Iraq .
This time the counter-terrorist experts will be targeting Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of IS and now the world’s most wanted terrorist.
A source said: “We need to go into Syria and Iraq and kill as many IS members as we can. You can’t negotiate with these people.
“This is not a war of choice. They are cash rich and have a plentiful supply of arms. If we don’t go after them, they will soon come after us.
“In Iraq, Task Force Black was carrying out strike operations every night.
“It was an unrelenting, intelligence-led assault on al-Qaeda. It took a lot of hard work and no small amount of sacrifice – but it worked.
“Defeating IS cannot be done by air strikes alone. You have to get on the ground and take out the commanders – cut off the snake’s head.
“The organisation will then begin to collapse. IS targets civilians and has yet to get into a real fight with a modern Western military.
“The SAS and US special forces will do untold damage to them.
“They’ll focus on the high command. This is going to be a long campaign, probably lasting years.
“And it will be like nothing the West has ever had to confront before.”
The new task force will comprise a squadron of the SAS, special forces aircrews from the RAF and agents from MI5 and MI6.
The operation will be led by America’s CIA spy agency….

Good idea as long as the politicians don’t hamper them with lots of politically correct rules of engagement.

Public announcements of this will just encourage west based jihadists to mount revenge acts on western soil.
Hi isis we are coming to kill you ? Ok thanks for the call we will leave a key out !
If this story is not a hoax then it is a warning to the leaders of isis to make sure they are not around.
This whole isis thing is really starting to look dodgy.

I am still a little sceptical about how hard it is to see a sixty strong convoy of humvees, a tank or two and a heap of utilities with guns on the back all waving a black flag driving done one of the few roads that lead to Syria.

Sure solo the vetting process that sees a few from hundreds make it to special forces probably means that those that risk their lives for us just cant wait to sexually assault someone.
I have know a few generations of special forces members and believe me they are fit they are brave and above all they are very very intelligent.
Sorry Soloview but your comment cannot even be taken in jest.

Richardl says
it’s sickening. Task Force “Black” and it is announced like it a new neighbourhood watch patrol. All is politics these days. And SAS and SOG guys will pay.
It is far too late for SOF anyway: they horror campaign has ensured that the TF Black will face a completely hostile environment with the local population being too afraid not to tip the bad guys off. This is an unsustainable operation. It needs to be preceded by a successful air campaign.
Beagle says
“completely hostile environment with the local population being too afraid not to tip the bad guys off”
Yup. The IS rampage and slaughter has probably eliminated almost everyone hostile to their interests. And agreed, the rest will be terrified.
The only way this works is with intense close air support. IS is not some ragged band of amateur terrorists, but a jihad army with many armored vehicles and with mujahideen trained well enough to fight on multiple fronts and win. Special operators should be used to bring down the heavy metal, not risk capture in gunfights.
Richardl says
the two of us agree, yet the political level disagrees and uses SOF in large scale operations. Obama, the disgusting moron, sees SOF as his poltical bling bling: in effect he is hanging a big golden chain around his neck with SOF in 20cm letters. Mind you, I am not saying that McCain is much better.
The way I see the situation in Iraq/Syria/etc. is very much what I said about AFG 13 years ago: bomb the shit out of them and no boots on the ground. Same goes for all other Mohammedan countries. And of course take no Mohammedans in but offer asylum to all Christians or Jews. I am not wild about the Yazidis: they run major crime operations in some German cities and behave exactly like the Mohammedan invaders.
Beagle says
“I am not wild about the Yazidis: they run major crime operations in some German cities and behave exactly like the Mohammedan invaders.”
Interesting. They’ve become a project of mine, educationally speaking. One of the most confusing groups of people I’ve ever looked at, both in terms of religion and ethnicity.
Beagle says
“uses SOF in large scale operations”
Forgot to address this. Great point. In order to justify boots on the ground it appears Obama and Cameron are going to use SOF outside the purposes for which they are best suited: rescue, demolition, HVT assassination, and so on. In terms of military problem solving outside mere political considerations, the IS calls for heavy air power and armored divisions backed up by special forces. But it sounds like we’re going to get special forces backed up by some air power.
Obama has to lead all presidents in risking and actually getting special forces killed.
umbra says
This is a liquidation unit. It goes in, neutralise its targets and get out. There is no country building baggage associate with this, so minimal contact with local population.
There will be heavy intel, counter-intel and air support. These guys aren’t planning on going in to a hot zone to get shot up (although this could happen if their counter intel fails).
Richardl says
what intel does TF Black have? All SigInt, no HumInt. We all know that no ops planner worth his salt would ever send SOF without HumInt.
The bad guys are embedded with the local population. If SOF go in, they will kill non-combattants. If the bad guys are not embedded, you can use air assets. It’s a no-brainer. Plus: the SAS don’t really care about collateral damage. In my experience US SOF do. Not good for morale…
umbra says
There is probably no reliable human intel left in isis territories (genocide plus regular executions leads to near zero value human intel from local population). In this particular situation, SF will likely rely on signal and visual intel for the most part. It is doubtful that such intel alone could locate main isis leadership targets quickly. This will be a slow cat and mouse chase.
TH says
I am not sure that it is true that the SAS don’t care about collateral damage. The British have traditionally been better than the Americans at avoiding casulties. The fact that they operate in small groups would indicate that the wouldn’t be wanting to kill anyone they find, but the bad guys they are looking for.
TH says
In the 1950s the SAS spent a long period in Malasyia and defeated the marxist terrorists in the jungle thanks to winning the hearts and minds of the locals. It was part of their strategy. Similarly later in Yemen in the 60s. In those days the politicians were not so wimpy. There is no press coverage of what they do. It is strange that their deployment in Iraq would be announced.
gravenimage says
Richardl, I wouldn’t assume that the local population would turn on these brave soldiers just out of fear—after all, most of them are Muslims, and many of then seem to welcoming ISIS with open arms.
And certainly, many of them seemed quite gleeful about turning on their Christian and Yazidi neighbors.

Brigadier S.K. Malik, The Quranic Concept of Power
Additionally its significance lies in its advocacy of terror as a weapon willed by Allah. Malik is very clear on this: the center of gravity is the soul of our infidel enemy. It is the enemy’s faith, and the best tool ordained by Allah to destroy our enemy’s soul is terror.
So we have a serving General in the Pakistani Army telling us that 9/11 is the way to wage war. War today is not to be understood in terms of western strategic concepts such as Land Air battle. It is not Fire and Maneuver, or nuclear deterrence. It is 9/11. It is terror. According to Malik, striking terror in the soul of the enemy is the most effective divinely ordained weapon they have to use against their enemies. Destroying the faith of the enemy is the object of war, according to Malik, and Jihad is the tool.
To illustrate his point, Malik described numerous battles that Mohammed engaged in, along with other conflicts in the history of Islam.

SpiritOf1683 says
If Cameron wants to see ISIS defeated, he will have to swallow his pride and perform the biggest U-turn of his Premiership. Only a year ago, on 29th August 2013, he lost a Commons vote to help ISIS to topple Assad. We know that at the moment, the most powerful force opposing ISIS is the Syrian Army, and they’re struggling. ISIS won’t be beaten without targetting them in Syria as well as Iraq, so he will have to go back on his position of one year ago, or see ISIS win. Now that would be politically humiliating and lay his appalling judgement out in the open, but he put himself in that position and that is the price to pay for eventually defeating ISIS.
RonaldB says
I don’t mind the concept of eliminating the leadership of ISIS, but the effort brings several questions to mind.
1) If the military has an effective response to Islamic guerrilla warfare, why are we faring so poorly in Afghanistan?
2) Russia has a special forces probably second to none in the world. Why was Russia soundly defeated in Afghanistan?
3) Why are mosques sprouting like weeks in every state of the US, and in every Western country?
4) Why are the special forces continually being called to clean up the messes left behind by US interference in functioning governments in the Middle East? Examples are Libya, Iraq, and Syria, all of whose governments were being more or less successful in suppressing the real jihads, and all of whose governments were, or are being, toppled with US support?
The post by sidney penny is extremely informative, as it documents that Islamic philosophy of war is not based on fixed-piece warfare, but on subversion, intimidation, and terrorism. What’s going to happen to US resolve when a few special forces troops are captured, some of them are publicly beheaded, and the rest are threatened unless the US ends the campaign?
Common sense dictates a few principles in dealing with Muslims:
1) Maintain strong borders. Punish Muslim countries that engage in actual warfare, and above all, don’t allow individual Muslims to immigrate.
2) Don’t be too picky about the types of governments in Muslim countries, and above all, don’t assume that Western principles will work.
3) Make any strikes quick, deadly, and focused. The US special forces nearly wiped out the Taliban when we invaded Afghanistan. Our mistake was in assuming that we could remain there and continue to have victories. This was the same mistake the Russians made, with exactly the same result. The most we could hope for in Afghanistan (or any other Muslim country) would be a government sufficiently intimidated that it would not support across-the-border terrorism. In other words, it is not the job of the US to eliminate burkhas for women who choose to remain Muslim.
umbra says
1) in afghanistan, the enemy were amongst the population. Impossible to shoot at things one could not see. SF units can kill lots of insurgents, but inflicting massive casualties do not always lead to the defeat of insurgencies. It is the will of the insurgency that has to be broken. In the present situation, SF appears to be solely (lack of a better word) an assassination tool intended to cut off the leadership (operational, planning, logistics, etc) of isis. It remains to be seen if this does in fact break the isis fight will. In all probability, eliminating these heads may not break the fighting will, but rather break the cohesion of the organisation. isis is reliant of brute force to ensure that subordinates tow the line. Once such a brutal leadership is gone (the glue that binds them together), the organisation disintegrates. In addition, infighting may further accelerate the demise of isis. It is probable that there are many members who are aspiring to lead the caliphate.
2) the soviets were unable to fully secure afghanistan in the 80’s for the same reason the US failed in the 2000’s. They ended up fighting a sizeable segment of the population.
3) obvious answer – cultural invasion with the intent of eventually destroying all other non-islamic cultures.
4) If eliminating the heads of isis leads to its destruction, then SF is more efficient and effective than regular combat formations. SF is cheaper to mobilise than an entire army. Its operations generally lead to lower colleratal and casualties.
US forces did nearly pushed the taliban out afghanistan, but they simply ran into pakistan and regrouped. Of course, US forces could not and did not hunt for taliban in deep in pakistani territory.

I think they should not do it. This issue needs to be resolved by Muslims. Why don’t Turkey go in? It is a threat directly to them.
USA should not clean up the mess the Muslims keep making.
We need to get out and stay out, and leave all our support for any of the oppressive Islamic states behind. And that includes Turkey and certainly Pakistan.
Look people, don’t be so short sighted. Imagine the ISIS is overcome this time, then what? We still have Iran to deal with. The Brotherhood will not disappear, they will only hate us more. We need to develop a new comprehensive STRATEGY to this cancer on the free world.
We need to turn the tables already. And that means on Turkey and Pakistan and any and all states we back by funds and military aid. There is NOTHING these countries are giving to us in return. Once we give up our obsession with holding strategic positions in the Middle East whose only purpose it is to back Islamic states. Get out. Leave them behind. Be independent of Middle Eastern oil and get out.
But close off the region. Quit trading with any of the Islamic states, Saudi-Arabia in particular. Don’t allow Emirate Airlines to land in the West either.
Evacuate what’s left of non-Muslims from central Middle-East.
Then see too it that ISIS will hit on Iran ASAP. This will bind tremendous war power between two of our most dangerous enemies so we can sit back take out the popcorn and watch as they slaughter each other. If they have any power left and attack Turkey, we will not help Turkey unless they de-Islamize and open up their civil society and make restitution to the Christian Church and the Kurds. We need to turn the tables and make high demands to anyone who wants the protection of the west.
De-Islamize or fight on your own against your own Islamists.
Further, once IS has overrun what’s left of Iraq, we immediately recognize them as a Country. Anyone inside the west who sympathizes with the Islamic State will automatically lose their western citizenship under the assumption that their citizenship is IS, we deport them all into IS territory. And we deport all of Guantanamo into it. Every Islamic radical we flush out into this hellhole. It does not matter if the IS becomes strong and takes over all of the Middle East (save Israel and Lebanon). It is part of a comprehensive strategy that they would.
Because the key is that we in the west start defending ourselves from inside and outside. We make strong ultimatums to everyone inside and out: you either denounce, thoroughly in action the theology of Jihad and secularize, or you leave our realm and our protection. This demand must be absolute, not “ifs” and “buts”. No more appeasement of so called “moderate Muslims” but ONLY Muslims who actively and in Arabic cleanse their theology from Jihad and confront their own bloody history, preach it in Arabic, and spiritualize their religion or abandon it. No more lying and double-tongued excusing. Nor more Cultural Marxist bullshitting.
Then Turkey will either go the way of opening and de-Islamizing or they fight the approaching IS alone. Same with Pakistan (where India would be the prime driver of our free world alliance.) But we tell Turkey as well: once Ankara falls, we will march in and take all of Thrace and Constantinople, and we will declare Asia Minor up to Ankara as a demilitarized Zone.
The demilitarized Zone works like this: the moment IS moves into it, we do forward defense with tactical Nukes. We give the people of that region a chance to resist IS and fight it, might even give them weapons. But they will do this work as a last straw on life, because if they lose or betray us, the tactical nukes would rain down on that zone. And then we would take it and secure it, and declare the next de-militarized zone. And so forth closing in on IS.
Then either Muslims will reform or their land will be taken (back) by the west. And we would continue to suppress Islam which is unwilling to reform its theology of Jihad.
Jax Tolmen says
Interesting ideas – except that none of it will happen. There is not enough support for any of that to happen in the public sphere.
Ignoring IS might be a strategic fallacy. You assume that the West can automatically win against them if they’re allowed to grow. I’m not nearly so confident. Killing these people now will draw a line in the sand that Iran/MB will learn to respect.
It would be a very dangerous gamble to allow the IS to propagate and spread – we could end up with something far worse than our other enemies.

…………………………
Well, this *could* be a good thing. I have no doubt that America and Britain have the finest special troops in the world.
But the problem is that our enemy is not just ISIS leadership—there are a lot of “ordinary” Syrian and Iraqi Sunni Muslims who have welcomed them with open arms, and who will likely regard our brave troops not as liberators, but just as Infidel invaders.
We haven’t even heard much from Al-Bagdadi—the “Caliph”—lately, for instance. Last we heard, in fact, he had been injured. The Islamic State doesn’t seem to be much of a “top-down” operation at all—identifying and taking out “leadership” may not just be difficult, but ineffective, as well.
And that’s if—and a *big* if, as Robert Spencer notes—US and UK authorities don’t hamstring our men in the first place.
I hate to be so wary here—if we are going to genuinely and effectively push back against Jihad, no one will be happier to see it than myself.
But if we are just putting more good Americans and Britons in harm’s way, then it could well do more harm than good.
Kathy Brown says
