Church of England bishop says Qur’an should be read at Charles’ coronation

Christians have forgotten part of the divine revelations they received: “From those, too, who call themselves Christians, We did take a covenant, but they forgot a good part of the message that was sent them: so we estranged them, with enmity and hatred between the one and the other, to the day of judgment. And soon will Allah show them what it is they have done.” — Qur’an 5:14

Jesus is not the Son of God: “O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion nor utter aught concerning Allah save the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, and His word which He conveyed unto Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and say not “Three” – Cease! (it is) better for you! – Allah is only One Allah. Far is it removed from His Transcendent Majesty that He should have a son. His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is sufficient as Defender.” — Qur’an 4:171

“It is not befitting to (the majesty of) Allah that He should beget a son. Glory be to Him! when He determines a matter, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.” — Qur’an 19:35

Those who believe that Jesus is God’s Son are accursed: “The Jews call ‘Uzair a son of Allah, and the Christians call Christ the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouth; (in this) they but imitate what the unbelievers of old used to say. Allah’s curse be on them: how they are deluded away from the Truth! ” — Qur’an 9:30

Jesus was not crucified: “And because of their saying: We slew the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, Allah’s messenger – they slew him not nor crucified him, but it appeared so unto them; and lo! those who disagree concerning it are in doubt thereof; they have no knowledge thereof save pursuit of a conjecture; they slew him not for certain.” — Qur’an 4:157

Prince Charles’s coronation service should be opened with a reading from the Koran, a senior Church of England bishop said yesterday.

The gesture would be a ‘creative act of accommodation’ to make Muslims feel ‘embraced’ by the nation, Lord Harries of Pentregarth said.

But critics attacked the idea, accusing the Church of ‘losing confidence’ in its own institutions and traditions.

Lord Harries, a former Bishop of Oxford and a leading CofE liberal thinker, said he was sure Charles’s coronation would give scope to leaders of non-Christian religions to give their blessing to the new King.

The former Bishop of Oxford, who continues to serve as an assistant bishop in the diocese of Southwark, made the suggestion about the Koran during a House of Lords debate. He told peers the Church of England should take the lead in ‘exercising its historic position in a hospitable way’.

He said that at a civic service in Bristol Cathedral last year authorities had agreed to a reading of the opening passage of the Koran before the beginning of the Christian ritual. He said: ‘It was a brilliant creative act of accommodation that made the Muslim high sheriff feel, as she said, warmly embraced but did not alienate the core congregation.

‘That principle of hospitality can and should be reflected in many public ceremonies, including the next coronation service.’

Lord Harries’ suggestion comes more than 20 years after the Prince first said he would prefer to be seen as ‘Defender of Faith’ rather than be known by the monarch’s title of ‘Defender of the Faith’.

Charles said in 1994 he ‘always felt the Catholic subjects of the sovereign are equally as important as the Anglican ones, as the Protestant ones’.

‘Likewise, I think that Islamic subjects, or the Hindu subjects, or the Zoroastrian subjects of the sovereign, are of equal and vital importance.’ In 2006 the Prince made known that he wanted a multifaith coronation that would be more ‘focused and telecentric’ than his mother’s in 1953.

However traditionalist Christians condemned Lord Harries’s idea.

Simon Calvert of the Christian Institute think-tank said: ‘Most people will be amazed at the idea that a Christian leader would consider the use of the Koran at a Christian service in a Christian abbey.

People are just so disappointed when senior Church of England figures lose confidence in the claims of the Christian faith.’

Andrea Minichiello Williams, a member of the CofE’s parliament, the General Synod, and head of the Christian Concern pressure group, said: ‘At a time when we are looking at what British values mean, we cannot have values in a vacuum. British values stem from our Christian heritage.

‘We cannot pretend all religions are the same, or have the same benefits and outcomes for the nation.’…

    Yes. In fact, Charles I am sure would LOVE this idea. Though he won’t say so. Maybe, at last, England will have a new Nazi King, much like the illustrious King Edward! They have so much in common already, only Charles is an Islamic supremacist sympathizer, rather than a nazi man. But of course, the two are hand in hand evil with plans of world domination and opression, so there is little practical difference.

    • That idea is a nonsense, recently Charles spoke out against Islam in as much as he was having a rethink on it and as a religion of peace which it so often claims. His comments then surprised many considering how they would be taken now in England with its sizeable Islamic community, many of whom are potential jihadists.

      • So he’s changed his tune from when he was making speeches like — urging the world to follow Islamic ‘spiritual principles’ in order to protect the environment (June, 2010) or about how he was learning arabic to read the Koran in its original form and to decipher Arabic script on visits to mosques and museums (March 2013)???

        No. He urged moslem leaders to say something about Christian persecution in the Middle East which is laudible (Nov 4 , 2014) — but that’s hardly speaking out against Islam or rethinking it as the “religion of peace”.

        Could you provide a link to the story where he actually says these things? Please.

    All worthy selections, but I believe this is an even more salient one:

    Qur’an Sura 30: Surah Ar-Rum. “Rum” is “Rome”, or the Byzantine Empire. But in the larger sense, it is any Infidel power that presents an obstacle to the spread of Islam. The modern “Rum” is the free West. One can make an argument for Britain, along with the US, being the foremost leader of “Rome” today.

    Qur’an 30:2: The Romans have been defeated!

    Qur’an 30:8-12:

    “Do they not travel in the land, and see what was the end of those before them? They were superior to them in strength, and they tilled the earth and populated it in greater numbers than these unbelievers have done, and there came to them their Messengers with clear proofs. Surely, Allah wronged them not, but they used to wrong themselves.

    “Then evil was the end of those who did evil, because they belied the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, Messengers, etc.) of Allah and made mock of them.

    “Allah alone originates the creation, then He will repeat it, then to Him you will be returned.

    “And on the Day when the Hour will be established, the Mujrimun (disbelievers, sinners, criminals, polytheists, etc.) will be plunged into destruction with deep regrets, sorrows, and despair…”

    I can think of no Qur’an passage that would be more apt for ushering in a useful idiot who would happily preside over Britain’s ultimate destruction.

    Of course, I hope the hapless Prince Charles is skipped altogether for the much saner and more able William.

    I don’t know how much William understands about Islam, but he is not groveling to it on a regular basis as is his witless father.

          I am curious as to what you think of Prince William. He has, to my knowledge, said little specifically about Islam, but he and his brother Harry have actually seen some service in Afghanistan against the Jihad. And certainly, he hasn’t said such insane things as “follow the Islamic way to save the world” as has the egregious Prince Charles.

          And more generally, he just seems like an all ’round better human being.

  27. I believe that at the most recent swearing of the President of Ireland, a ceremonial post, an Iman was invited to pray. The percentage of muslims in Ireland is minuscule. It is politically correct and the Irish powers that be, especially the media, consider that the Catholic Church is the source of all the ills of Ireland throughout the centuries. It did not demand compromise with wicked practices that oppose the redemption of man. What explanation does Islam have for the phenomena of an empty tomb witnessed by all including the crucified that compelled accepting Christianity in Rome as a State Religion. Was Christ not really crucified and buried and resurrected which is the center of Christianity which were opposed by Islam? Were there not deployed well armed Roman soldiers to watch over the grave where his body was buried to impede any tampering of his remains by blood and flesh? Was anyone able to stop the plan of God announced by the genuine prophets many years before Christ was born that these events will take place? Prince Charles has all the time on earth in spite of his Royal preoccupation to study the Bible to equip him sufficiently to avoid uttering misleading impressions because to him who much is given much is expected

    • I’m with you, Dr. Nath. From you grammar and style, I suspect you are not a native speaker of English. I am, but “Anglo-Saxon” chiefly by osmosis. I’m also of the mind that British love of the Gospel at one point of their history may be one reason why God used them to bind this earth together in a global village. I don’t pretend to be a prophet, but this is simply a pious opinion of mine.

      Frankly, you can’t be “defender of faiths”. If you defend the Christianity of the Old and New Testaments, you are an enemy of the Islam of the Qur’an and Hadiths–and vice versa. I fear that Charlie Windsor is embarrassing all and sundry with such nonsense.

    As I’ve said before (and, since islam will never change, no doubt I’ll be forced to say again – and again!):

    Islamic sharia “law” (crime) is the EXACT OPPOSITE of “British” (Western) LAW.

    Our LAW is based on the Golden Rule, which most simply defines all circumstantial, situational morality as “Do Not Attack First.”

    So all is forbidden, unless and until very specifically agreed to.

    This means our only real right is to not be attacked first, and our only real responsibility is to not attack (thereby innocent) others first. Period.

    It also therefore means we aren’t allowed to do anything either TO, or FOR each other, without getting the others’ express assent first.

    And it applies at all levels of human social interaction, from the individual, family, clan, tribe, nation, state, empire and global (international) levels.

    It’s why even the largest group or gang of individual humans, “the state” isn’t allowed to attack any of its real live human individual citizen component parts first, and so it’s why we have an expectation of “Innocent Until Proven Guilty,” and not – as criminal libertine “liberal” gangsters always seem to prefer, the exact opposite, or “Guilty Until Never Proven Innocent!”

    From this social contract, the West establishes trust, and through that trust, economic progress, and Civilization.

    Islam, being based on the exact opposite, where all is allowed except and until that which is very specifically disallowed, asserts it’s always everyone’s holy right and duty to attack everyone else first, to do whatever they can (might makes right!) TO others, as long as they can claim to be doing it FOR them (for their own good)!

    From embracing this brazen rule of criminal chaos, they inflict distrust, economic stagnation, and savage barbarism on everyone.

    CAPISCE?

    Islam is inherently a form of SEDITION – because it never agreed with the Christian notion of separating secular (road-paving, taxation) and religious realms (render unto Caesar) and went with “Render The World Unto Muhammad!”

    So it doesn’t believe in national sovereignty, preferring global theocracy (‘ummah’) ruled by the Caliphate government!

    Islam is ONLY a crime syndicate, and the only “religious” part in it’s where they say:

    “God told us to commit these crimes!”

    Muslims are never national citizens; they regard all national sovereignties as temporary, man-made false idols which must all be eventually destroyed and replaced with the one-world global muslim Ummah, to be ruled by their theocratic caliphate, and their duty is to wage offensive war to extort, enslave, and murder all the non-muslims. Terrorism is an inherent, not an incidental, nor in any way a “radical,” component of islam.

    Islam’s Sharia is either compatable with our Western, morality-based law (in which case it is superfluous) or it is not (in which case it is illegal).
