The longer the Islamic State continues to exist, and the longer that it amasses more and more of the ordinary features of a functioning government, the harder it is going to be for Barack Obama to maintain his claim that it is not a state. And the legends on these coins once again belie is other claim, that it is not Islamic.
“Islamic State says it’ll mint its own coins,” by Maamoun Youssef, Associated Press, November 14, 2014:
CAIRO — The leader of the Islamic State group has ordered the terror organization to start minting gold, silver and copper coins for its own currency – the Islamic dinar.
A website affiliated with the group posted the order late Thursday, saying IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi instructed his followers to mint the coins to “change the tyrannical monetary system” modelled on Western economies that “enslaved Muslims.”
The order was approved by the Islamic State group’s Shura Council, an advisory board, according to the website. The authenticity of the posting could not be independently verified but the website has been used in the past for IS postings.
After seizing large swaths of Iraqi and Syrian territory earlier this year, the Islamic State group proclaimed a caliphate on lands under its control. It has also sought to implement its harsh interpretation of Islamic law, or Sharia, and al-Baghdadi has proclaimed himself the caliph.
According to photographs of coin prototypes, they carry the words in Arabic: “The Islamic State / A Caliphate Based on the Doctrine of the Prophet.”
It’s unclear where the Islamic State group intends to get the gold, silver and copper for the coins. It said the dinar’s purchasing power would be its weight in gold, silver or copper.
One of the gold coins carries the symbol of seven stalks of wheat, mentioned in the Quran, while another has the map of the world, a reference to Islam someday ruling the entire world. One of the silver coins shows a sword and a shield in a reference to holy war, or jihad while another has a minaret symbolizing Damascus mentioned in one of the Prophet Muhammad’s sayings.
Another coin carries the symbol of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, where the Prophet prayed. It’s revered as Islam’s third-holiest place, complete with the site’s iconic gold-topped Dome of the Rock, which enshrines the rock from which Muslims believe the Prophet ascended to heaven.
The copper coins carry the symbol of the crescent moon and three palm trees, also significant in Islam….

Muslim countries need to realize that ISIS is out to destroy them and their leaders and any minorities that aren’t Salafist! That’s very personal. They’d better stop ISIS if they want to continue breathing.

How islamophobic and racist! Those conspiracy, ultra-hyper-mega-archi wingnuts from the… AP!? How dare they point out Islamic supremacism, intrinsically embedded in Islam’s history, its texts and founder, they should totally keep mum about it and and fabricate more “islamophobia” stories.
Save a screenshot of that AP story, they might delete it in the future. Ooops….

Another stream of revenue for ISIS: coin collectors!
Bank robbery, extortion, slave trading, black market oil — all these are justified under Islamic law in the Koran and by Mohammad’s example as a tyrant and criminal in the hadiths and sunna. Pretty straight forward. But what about issuing coins and raising money that way? What are the rules under sharia for that? Does anybody know?
Don McKellar says
Ah! I read the article all the way through. Well, they’re doing everything they can to make it truly Islamic money.
jihad3tracker says
Get ready for “rare collectible” proof sets on Arabic shopping channels, because this is one item the Franklin Mint will decline to strike — maybe.
Don McKellar says
Somebody should issue counterfeit coins with the image of Mohammad on them. That would be funny.
Mark Spahn (West Seneca, NY) says
How interesting. Does the Arabic really say “A Caliphate Based on the Doctrine of the Prophet”? Why the indefinite article “a”? Are more caliphates coming? Why does “(pbuh)” not follow the reference to “the Prophet”? Islam has many prophets (Muhammad, Isa, Adam, etc.), so each denomination can feature a different prophet. (“Collect them all!”) We can look forward to these coins being advertised as an investment vehicle, by some of our favorite cashing-out has-been actors, like
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFvPG-E6hFs
And if the Islamic State ever goes under, these coins will become even more valuable. They’re a can’t-lose investment!

“A Caliphate Based on the Doctrine of the Prophet”?
Yes, it does. Here’s the translation of the inscription on the coin:
The Islamic State
21 karats
5 Dinars
21.25 grams
A Caliphate Based on the Doctrine of the Prophet
Robinium says
>> Are more caliphates coming?
There used to be other caliphates in islamic history, e. g. the Ottoman Empire. So the IS is not the only caliphate ever.

All they need to to do now is follow the Palestinian play book. Present themselves as freedom fighters for true Islam. The people in their area want them to govern(no one will say otherwise), they rule the area with a defined code code and now they seek recognition from the UN and EU to provide needed relief for their people and Statehood to give them an equal footing with their adversaries on the world stafge. Don’t doubt it there will European supporters willing to demonstrate, Jimmy Carter saying it isn’t all white and black UN supporters and so.

If it continues long enough, it will happen and tax dollars from all nations will help them pay for their islamic food sacrificed to baal (satan), their schools to teach…force…children to bend to the will of satan, even though they are said to be the *richest* terror state with all that oil and the gold and silver they plan to buy.

“its harsh interpretation of Islamic law”, says Maamoun Youssef.
No. This is an old and worn wool-pulling ploy. It is designed to make people think there is a “benign” interpretation, you know, the one that all Nice Peaceful muslims follow. There is not. Islamic law is itself harsh. Kill means kill: there is not a non-harsh “interpretation” available.
Thanks go to Robert Spencer. He has pointed out time and again that the only way to be a benign muslim is to be partially observant of Islamic law, in other words, not a fully observant muslim.
somehistory says
This point cannot be emphasized enough. There is one islam and one way of interpretation of what the false prophet said their false god wanted him and them to do…all the evil things their hearts desire and then some; nothing good, nothing truly *Divine* and nothing that will ever benefit another human. There is one islam and one interpretation. A very harsh way to treat fellow humans. From satan the devil, what else can one expect? Other words for harsh: cruel, pitiless, ruthless, merciless, abusive, vindictive, heartless, brutal.
BTW; the word harsh originates either in Danish harsk, meaning rancid or from Middle German harsch, meaning hairy or rough.
Rough, hairy, rancid mo put out the word of treatment for those better than he. Kill them by any and all painful, terrible means, or enslave them by any and all terrible means.

IS will never be a true modern state until it prints paper money that has no backing other than faith in the government.
eduardo odraude says
They don’t want to be a “modern” state anyway. But if they put out gold and silver coins, they will probably learn what the other governments have known for centuries — the gold coins will be taken out of circulation and people will substitute coins with a gold outer layer and something relatively worthless inside. Then again, since they chop heads at the drop of a hat, maybe they can scare people enough not to tamper with the coins — except for agents of foreign governments perhaps, who might be able to do serious damage.

Why have they used the Mollweide projection? A Mohammedan, far away from home, with only a coin in his pocket to guide him, would need the Mercator projection to work out the direction of Mecca.

Not only Barack Obama, it would become harder for all world leaders to maintain that claim, including any future US Republican leader. They would not however have much difficulty forgetting how the Islamic State came into being, and I am afraid, the apathetic populace wouldn’t bother remind them either.

The prophet never prayed at the Al-Aqsa mosque because he never left Arabia. And the myth of his ascending to heaven from there is just a myth — a way for the Arabs to claim someone else’s holy place. It’s a custom for Muslims to build mosques on the ruins of other people’s holy places, or to convert still-standing ones to mosques. Then they become dar al-Islam, part of the world of Islam, and the fact that they belong to other people is not worthy of consideration; no, it’s actively denied. That’s the problem that Western Europe is soon to face, but they’re too blind and politically correct to know it.

It is a good idea to start their own currency. Sooner rather than later, a few of them will amass most of the wealth of the country. These people will then, I hope, be ‘corrupted; by money and steer the country away from creating trouble. Also, the longer ISIS exists and consolidates, the more terrorists can be exported into it and then contained. I am happy that they are doing it. They do not realize how slippery it is. Money is the ultimate seductress.
