Mia M. Bloom is a Professor of Security Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. I had never heard of her until October, when she told a Jihad Watch reader that I would lose a debate with anyone “educated in the field,” and he suggested that she and I debate. I agreed to do so, whereupon she responded with venom — and refused, of course, to debate. In this she was typical of today’s academics, who are, as they say, all hat and no cattle, and more ideologues than educators. They dismiss my work and those of all other foes of jihad terror with furious contempt, but are unwilling, and doubtless unable, to defend their claims in open discussion and debate. In her initial exchange with Jihad Watch reader Ken she made an embarrassing error of fact regarding the Qur’an, and you can see more of Mia Bloom’s abject ignorance of her field here.
But this is immeasurably worse than just ignorance. Another Jihad Watch reader, Richard, has been corresponding with Professor Bloom. In the course of this correspondence, he sent her a link from this site — and received a predictable response:
1. Richard to Mia Bloom:
http://www.jihadwatch.org/2014/11/director-of-us-funded-un-school-calls-synagogue-jihad-murders-wonderful
2. Mia Bloom to Richard:
Please stop sending me these hateful links from racists
I’m just deleting anyways and I never read them
With thanks
Mia BloomSent from my iPad
It is “hateful” and “racist” to note that an Islamic supremacist praised the murders of four rabbis inside a synagogue by jihadists screaming “Allahu akbar”? Richard apparently took exception to this, whereupon Mia Bloom replied with an email full of links to hate and smear sites — the kind of thing that used to be printed on smeary broadsheets and hawked by wild-eyed vagrants on seedy streetcorners. This was her “evidence” that I am “hateful” and “racist”: the usual smears, lies and distortions, which I have answered many times. But the portion of this email from Bloom that I have reproduced here was jarring: Bloom approvingly cited a vile anti-Semitic hate site, from which comes the charming illustration on this post — Bloom must like this picture, as she drew Richard’s attention to it:

http://mynameisjoecortina.wordpress.com/2012/11/23/robert-spencer-rat-faced-racist-hate-monger-liar-and-jew-lover/
I come across a lot of vile hate sites in the course of this work, but this “MyNameIsJoeCortina” site is one of the most vile of all, so vile that even Julius Streicher would recoil at its grotesque and open Jew-hatred. It is endless paragraph after paragraph about “jew filth” and “ugly treasonous nasty filthy jew mentality evil.” It is all disgusting, but I had to laugh at this: “Reptiles like Spencer and Geller and their ilk – jews and jew useful idiots have transformed us into hate filled morons.” Hate-filled morons — that they are indeed.
Since she cited this site approvingly, it must be asked: is Mia Bloom an anti-Semite? Is Mia Bloom a neo-Nazi? Does the University of Massachusetts-Lowell know that they have a professor who could be a Nazi sympathizer on their payroll? The argument cannot be sustained that Mia Bloom was not aware of what kind of site this was, as she seems to have enjoyed and approved of the picture of my head superimposed on a rat’s body — with the rat’s body emblazoned with a Star of David. “This one has a picture,” she wrote happily, with no trace of disapproval of the pic or of the site as a whole.
As American academia becomes more and more an uncritical mouthpiece for “Palestinian” jihad propaganda, anti-Semitism is becoming more and more common on university campuses. But this is especially vile. Will the University of Massachusetts-Lowell move to reprimand and discipline Mia Bloom, and distance itself from her vile Nazi propaganda? Or is American academia already too corrupt and compromised for that?
Please write, politely and courteously, to University of Massachusetts-Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan, and ask him to fire Professor Bloom or at least open disciplinary hearings into her lack of professionalism and apparent neo-Nazi sympathies. Marty_Meehan@uml.edu

HELLO PROFESSOR BLOOM — I KNOW YOU ARE READING EVERY POST HERE.
As many Jihad Watch readers here already know , I am a lifelong 65 year old Democrat, so you are NOT getting a conservative Republican talking to you now . . .
There is absolutely no reasonable expectation that you will currently be able to see Islam’s pathology. When I was decades younger, I also held intensely unresolved self-hate problems.
But as years go but maybe Robert Spencer’s posting here of what you and your pals actually consider academic discourse & acceptable conversation will have some positive effect . . .
Alarmed Pig Farmer says
When I saw the photo my interest was piqued for some lurid fun. But seeing the word “professor” brought down my long tentacle bullsheet detectors, realizing that Spencer is dealing with some earnest pious retard, as most professors are nowadays … including the “scientists” pushing the fake science or global warming… er, climate change, forgot about the sudden name change… and weather is not climate!
So what’s the lecture from this professor? It’s that the Bedouins, as they were called before their name was suddenly changed to Palestinians, and before hundreds of thousands of faraway Moslems poured into the Holy Land anticipating that business would pick up there with Jews running the show, which it of course did.
It is “hateful” and “racist” to note that an Islamic supremacist praised the murders of four rabbis inside a synagogue by jihadists screaming “Allahu akbar”?
Yes, it is. Confusing mass belief with facts is racist, hateful troublemaking and it’s bad for the environment, and even worse for business. We are all socialists now, we swapped freedom for a few decades of racial peace and piety before we go broke and there is fighting in the streets. But we are not all Moslems, at least not yet. That will take one or two more generations of self-retarded professors to get to that goal. And Palestine will be free. It may be highly radioactive by then, but it’ll no longer suffer under the yoke of Zionist oppression.

No; given the two facts we have at our disposal –
1) she’s an Academic, and
2) her academic career —
“Bloom has a PhD in political science from Columbia University, a Masters in Arab Studies from Georgetown University and a Bachelors from McGill University in Russian and Middle East Studies. She completed a year in the overseas program at Tel Aviv University and a semester at the Arab Language Institute (ALI) at the American University of Cairo. She has held research or teaching appointments at Rutgers, Princeton, Cornell, Harvard, and McGill Universities and speaks eight languages. She regularly appears on Fox News, CNN, C-SPAN, CBC and CTV and has been interviewed by Jim Lehrer for PBS, Ted Koppel for Nightline, and Jesse Pearson for MTV. Bloom analyzed the changing role of women and terrorism in a TEDxPSU talk in December 2011 [2].”

My interest in this whole subject has been fairly recent. Just in the past year. I had been fairly ignorant on the situation until IS started making such gains. Looking around me I have been startled to find many people holding what I consider to be fascist views though they would decry that very notion.
Lately I’ve started asking friends and acquaintances what their take is on the Islamic situation around the globe. What shocks me is the barely-contained fury these otherwise normal people seem barely able to contain–against America and Israel–not IS! Certainly not against Islam. These would be the ones who read the Huffington Post and have “enlightened” attitudes on everything from Abortion to Legalization of dope and prostitution.
As they launch into a monologue (on a subject they have never talked about with me and I would dare say have never studied the history of) the stream spewing forth inevitably contains these words: “zionist” “Israel” “American imperialism” “Palestine” / “Crusaders” & “Christianity” + “Barbarism” + “brutality” / “Arabic culture” + “history” + “blossom” + “contribution” / “Islam” “retaliation” “Oil” “War”/ “Justice” “Victims” “Oppression”
Have they all been playing Word Link to ward off dementia? If so I do believe the exercise was in vain. It just comes out like a vomited mass–a word cloud in a comic strip.
What is most shocking is the vehemence and the absolute impossibility of having any kind of open discussion on the topic. Not every person I spoke with who holds this cluster of opinions has been indoctrinated by university studies (their specialization hardly seems to matter). Many have just come to this point by a kind of osmosis. That is the really scary part. There is something in them when they start talking this way which shuts down any rational dialogue. It seems…evil.
Mia Bloom is obviously a poster child for the cause. Chills me to the bone.

At this juncture as I type, I have only read the first paragraph “St. Croix” wrote, and I must say it is not encouraging. We in the Counter-Jihad — We few, we happy few, we band of brothers [and sisters] (notwithstanding that Diana West once wryly yet aptly quipped parenthetically “such as it is”) — though we desperately need a Big Tent as capacious as possible given how beleaguered are our rag-tag numbers and still incoherent organization, cannot help but pause, if only momentarily, when someone steps up to our Big Tent Flaps appealing (and appearing) to be One Of Us, but informs us right off the bat that he only woke up in the last few months, because of “IS”…??? Has he been living in a bloody cave these past 13 years…??? I mean, what the fuck…!!!??? And so forth.
As much as we may appreciate the general sociopolitical and psychological retardation that the culture of PC MC (Politically Correct Multi-Culturalism) fosters in people all around us, and as much as we may appreciate how prevalent indeed it is, infecting even our friends, neighbors, colleagues at work and school, and even our very family, not to mention the idiotic talking heads (Left and Right and In Between) on television and other media and in the hallowed halls of our political representatives throughout the bloody West all strangely afflicted with this mass neurosis of Islam Denial — nevertheless, we cannot be blamed for feeling taken aback at the testimony of someone who seems relatively decent, earnest and intelligent informing us matter-of-factly that he was ASLEEP until a few months ago when “IS” started beheading people; after over a decade of a ghastly mountain — yea, a motherfucking volcano of evil, alarmingly horrific attacks and massacres, and dangerous, outrageously unjust and ghastly and ghoulish human rights violations — in the name, furthermore (as if the aforementioned isn’t mindblowing enough) of a supremacist expansionist military apocalyptic blueprint to conquer the Goddamned Earth for fuck sake — perpetrated by Muslims all over the motherfucking globe including increasingly in the West, with this general catastrophe only metastasizing every year since 911. Yes, we know there are Westerners still clueless about this giant Elephant (or Camel) in the Room. But still, it boggles the mind. And frankly, it gives us pause and makes us wonder what type of person a person is who would be so blind.
Okay; let me pause to take a few breaths, a sip or two of my coffee, and continue reading the testimony of this “St. Croix” character.
voegelinian says
Well I read the rest of St. Croix’s, and it sounds fairly good, except for a nagging, unfortunate tendency toward the conspiracy theory toward the end there. One way to dissolve that would be for him to remind himself that all these Clueless Western Cluseaus around him are thinking pretty much the way he must have been thinking until a few months ago.
St. Croix says
I can tell you who I am. There is no need to spend much time figuring it out. I am a woman by the way. I don’t watch television–don’t own one and have not watched it for a couple of decades. So it is almost as if I do live in a cave.
I am a Christian. I grew up in an unusual sect of Christianity which observed the Jewish holy days.
Have not been terribly political. I live in a northern part of the world that is not urban and rarely see people who are “foreign.” Yes. The sticks. I lived for a while in two major cities so I’ve not lived as a hermit my whole life.
But let me tell you something. There are a lot of people like myself who have not been terribly political. They are living their ordinary lives. Hitler was more or less ignored by regular folk for a long time. People wondered how the Holocaust happened. How could a functional society be turned upside down and inside out by a CRAZY EVIL man and his followers? Because people didn’t realize what was going on until it was too late.
Robert Spencer is doing a good job. But if only people who are already in this camp bother with this site it’s like you are preaching to the converted. What is needed is that this message get out to the regular populace who are more or less ignorant. More or less. What they do get is from mainstream media and the slant of it is all the same–as you know. And I don’t just mean the beheadings and all of that which gets airplay; the average person does not understand how all these incidents are part of a historic unity.
And this is what strikes me. The people I’ve asked either say “oh it’s terrible” but don’t know anything the issues or they “launch” as I described in my earlier comment. It does seem like brainwashing with that group because they all say much the same drivel. Those are the ones who spend a fair bit of time reading internet or watching t.v. mainstream PC media news reports OR went to Uni and bought the package deal.
I am not brainwashed. And I’m not brain-dead. But I have lived a secluded and rustic life for the past couple decades. This is the life that suits me best and I value the freedom I have to live it. So there you have it. An anomaly in my media habits which makes me an outlier and also an ordinary person like so many others who are going about earning a living/battling illness/dealing with relatives and all that life “stuff” that serves to distract while the whole thing falls down around us.
I didn’t know Robert Spencer from Adam until I watched “What the West Needs to Know About Islam.” Don’t hate me for that! Rejoice that someone else has signed on to start waking others up in their own little corner of the globe. I’m here to learn and pick up what I can. I was ignorant of Islamic history and beliefs but not deceived by liberal lefty media ideas; those I’d encountered in Uni years ago and saw through the BS back then.
voegelinian says
St. Croix,
You also make assumptions about what I said. I didn’t express any animosity to you. I only articulated why we who have woken up have good reason to be wary (and weary about) when we encounter relatively decent and intelligent Westerners around us who remain asleep, or who only recently woke up. Most of the others here would be, and will be, far more friendly and forgiving than I am, because they are Softies at heart. I’m also a softy of sorts, but I am so weary and jaded about this issue, I really don’t give a fuck anymore when someone is slow on the uptake of this monstrous problem where people are now being massacred, tortured, stabbed, shot, beheaded, oppressed, outrageously violated in their human rights — and when these atrocities are part and parcel with a clear and present danger of terrorism against us that we have every reason to assume remains a horrific danger into the coming years and decades (largely because our mainstream news media and politicians remain woefully remiss in their obligation to inform and protect us, because they too are slow to wake up). I also take my fellow Jihad Watchers to task for signs of nougaty softness in their underbelly about this issue, and most of them have disappointed me so viscerally I frankly feel disgusted by them.
Back at the beginning of September of this year, for example, another person appeared in Jihad Watch comments and made some dubious statements ensconced within lots of padding assuring us of his Counter-Jihad bona fides, who wrote: “I knew very little about Islam other than what we hear on the news and in the papers until a month or so ago when I started watching a lot of Robert Spencer’s videos on You Tube.” (And this guy continued to make dubious statements, by the way). My responses to him (“Neil Jennison”) in his debut comments thread (and the responses of many other long-time Jihad Watch readers to him) may be found here:

The WWII Muslim leaders and the Nazis [who were National ‘Socialists’] – found common ground – in their wish to irradiate the Jews as a way of solving all of the world’s problems – and now many of the Leftist Socialist persuasion [and absolutely by no means all – as many are growing sick of it] – who ally themselves with Islam – are seem to express sympathies – with Muslim anti-Semantic sentiment – which has a history that precedes the 1967 war – long before there was a so-called Palestinian issue – that they believe all Muslim problems around the world are hinged on.
Doubtless – Isis doesn’t sit easy with the Islamic-victimhood-theory – wanton death, killing and Koran inspired rape – that can’t easily be censored – but Isis actions can be explained away as extreme – so let’s look at democratic Pakistan’s killing of more than 1000 Shias in the past two years.

I think this attitude is becoming more common in the US. There are people who think that their views are accurate and they are totally opposite of my views. They are also very firm about their hatred of Israel. When you talk with them about the facts they respond by saying that I am believing anti-Hamas Propaganda. It is hard to break through their belief system. It is either brain washing or a psychosis. We are becoming divided in how we see reality. It is very worrisome.

It’s what the Scriptures (can’t recall whether it’s in the TaNaKh or the Christian scriptures – call “strong delusion”.
Me, I think there’s more to it than mere human-level propaganda/ brainwashing (though for a good anatomy of that, by a master surgeon of the soul, there’s Jacques Ellul’s “Propaganda” …and his book “Un Chretien Pour Israel” which – published in 1983, just after the first Lebanon war – approaches the massive anti-Israel propaganda campaign as a “case study” of the phenomenon).
I think there’s an element of the demonic involved. For *that*, M Scott Peck’s “People of the Lie”, the chapter entitled “Of Possession and Exorcism” (don’t be put off; it’s actually very sober and illuminating).
Key indicator: the Lie. Peck suggests – and I think he’s *onto* something – that *the* mark of real, inveterate, obdurate Evil is persistent lying. Which causes confusion in decent honest people who encounter it, if they are unprepared. (He states that if someone really makes you feel confused when you’re dealing with them, you may be encountering Evil. Not always, but it’s a fairly reliable “indicator”. Another indicator is revulsion – a sane / healthy person will feel revulsion when tney encounter Evil, they will feel like they can’t get away fast enough.)
When I first read Peck’s “People of the Lie”, I had not begun to spend much time thinking about / researching Islam and the global Jihad. After I *had*, and then went back and re-read Peck, it was like it rang bells all over the place. Islam is not just the religion of murder: it is *the* Religion of the Lie; Muslims are, to the nth degree, the “People of the Lie”.
(which is, I suspect, why they have such a visceral hatred of the House of Israel; darkness *hates* and rages against the light).

There is definitely a phenomenon of the “Self-Hating Jew”, and it appears that Prof. Bloom is one of them. Two things save the Goyim who would dare point this out:
1) There are also Self-Hating Christians, Self-Hating Catholics (a discernible subcategory of the former with its own flavors), Self-Hating Westerners, Self-Hating Americans, Self-Hating Brits, Self-Hating Australians; etc (even if they may insist they are proud Whatevers, they couch their pride in a narcissistic form of White Colonial Guilt with some kind of Wilsonian PC MC New World of Kumbaya Values which is supposed to extravagantly (and self-righteously) house their ability to ameliorate the enormous cognitive dissonance their incoherent bullshit would ordinarily create in a rationally thinking person).
Secondly,
2) There exist fine perspicuously intelligent Jews — e.g., Debbie Schlussel, Giulio Meotti, Ruth King, Diana West and (I think) Pam Geller — who agree that the phenomenon exists and that it is pernicious for Jews, and for the West (to the extent that it informs the problem of the problem of Islam (the problem of the problem being the general Western myopia to the problem of Islam).
The above-mentioned Giulio Meotti, for example, is a Jewish Italian journalist who has some remarkably perceptive commentary on the subject (in, for example this essay, “Why I Loathe the Israeli Elite”).

Mr Spencer should wear his title of “rat boy for Israel” with pride. Remember Spiegelman’s wonderful, haunting graphic novel, “Maus”?
In Psalm 84 it says, “I would choose rather to sit on the threshold of the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness”.
Better to be a free though lowly rat in the House of Israel, than any powerful and evil thug – like Hamas jihad gang bosses in the lap of luxury in Qatar – in the murderous Empire of Islam.
And as for rats: in WWII the Australians at Tobruk, having been contemptuously dubbed “rats” by German propagandists, turned it around and made it a title of pride. The Rats of Tobruk are still remembered in Aussie military history today.
Perhaps Bosch Fawstin or Gravenimage should draw Mr Spencer as a fine, sleek, chivalric and bewhiskered Rat Knight; like Reepicheep the Warrior Mouse in C S Lewis’s Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
St. Croix says
Yes that’s a good one! Sir Rat at your service! It would make an excellent graphic.
I also agree with you on the nature of evil coming through in these conversations I’ve been having with what seemed like decent sane people. When they get started on this topic there’s this gush out of them that I do find revolting and almost terrifying. Not unlike a scene in the movie The Exorcist but this vomit is not literal but spiritual.
And I do get the same feeling or gut reaction as the times I’ve encountered a person manifesting extreme and aggressive mental illness or even “possession.” I don’t think it’s a coincidence! Scott Peck is onto something in his book People of the Lie. It could be a good title for a book about Muslims–even the ones who are moderate for real; they are still in the lie.
voegelinian says
The more important, because more sociopolitically prevalent and influential, aspect of this general Problem of the Problem (the second Problem being Islam; the first Problem being the problem of the Western myopia to the problem of Islam), is not the minority of arguably evil radical Leftists among us in the West, but the much broader demographic of relatively decent and intelligent Westerners who for complex reasons remain stuck in a paradigm that makes them think that it’s the Right Thing To Do to defend Muslims from “too much” criticism.
To demonize the Problem of the Problem would be, I fear, to steer what should be a civil war of ideas toward the perilous slippery slope of a Civil War.

Loved Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Read it and the other Narnia books about every ten years, starting in my twenties. A million times better than the movie versions I’ve seen. Lewis’ Pilgrim’s Regress is great too. Also The Great Divorce (not about marital divorce — about heaven and hell and the afterlife). Of course Lewis’ sci-fi trilogy. And then the unfinished one, The Dark Tower. So wonderful, and so painful when it cuts off in the middle. Lewis’ colleagues saw through one of the allegorical images in that one, which perhaps embarrassed Lewis, given the meaning of the image, and maybe that’s why Lewis never finished it. Man, I wish he had. It’s so great!
St. Croix says
I do believe in the last book of the Narnia series the ending features certain scimitar-wielding religious warriors who worship the demonic god “Tash.” These invading hordes seek to destroy all that is good remaining in Narnia and take over the country–a clear reference to Islam (and its true nature now that I see Islam for what it is).
Have not read The Dark Tower and almost don’t want to if it stops in the middle! Lewis is for me as well one of those authors I return to on a perennial basis. Always new insights from reading his works–fiction and non-fiction.

The sentiments expressed are eerie in the way they echo the ideas floating around the halls of academia. Jews can do no right in their eyes.
Of course facts are conveniently ignored now as then.
Just as in many of the same areas in the 14th century Jews were blamed for bubonic plague and attacked by the majority of the population which were “Christian.” I used ellipses because their actions betray Jesus (Jesus–the most famous Jew) and his teachings and even some Christian leaders such as Pope Clement VI said the plague had nothing to do with Jews as they too were losing numbers to the disease.

This is terrible to know our professors are stooping to Streicher’s level. And remember Streicher was hanged after his Nuremburg trial. Crimes Against Humanity. This Professor Mia Bloom (sounds like a fake-name to me) is adding to the hatred of the Jewish people. What kind of asshole does this on the academia dime?

Or is American academia already too corrupt and compromised for that?
Mr. Spencer you are an intelligent man, I’m sure you know the answer to that question already, given that you regularly engage in conversations and debates with those in academia. I am sure even you get tired by the same tactic used on you over and over again. Call you a hate filled racist without citing any facts to support that position. When you cite facts supporting your claim that islam is dangerous, they will call you names and scream at you trying to silence you instead of trying to counter your argument. You think such esteemed thinkers would know the basics of having an open and civil debate. Of course as you well know these people are hypocrites of the highest order, and only agree with thought and speech that agrees with their position.
Many of these people come from the old hippie movement, that movement was supposed to be for a free and open society, free speech ect. Ironic that they become the very thing they supposedly fought against. Next time you debate one of these people (though knowing you, you’ll be much more civil than I would be if i were in your position,) but it would be funny to ask them how does it feel being the very thing you supposedly hate. Though I understand the position you are in, if you give into the slightest provacation they will use this to smear you with. They believe in the Bruce Lee tactic of trying to destroy the image and destroy the man in the process, since they can’t defeat his ideas.

Mia Bloom, “Professor whatever” should put on burkas or niqab and she can screw herself. She doesn’t make a sense about Islam at all. You are right about professors getting loose and crazy nowaday!

Wow, crude photoshopping. I’m sorry Robert, kind of reminds me of THIS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GahwWwpuA4 1970s movie from a long time ago.

Since when was it racist to be against Islam. I thought Islam included members of all races – white, brown, black & yellow.
Obvoiusly she is not qualified in Philosophy, where word meanings and interpretations are paramount in formulating ideas and arguments.

Sent. Being a german born American, seeing these images just makes me sick. The same libel that was used by the Nazis and in the dark ages. Despicable for any academic.
