Somalia: Muslim questions death penalty for apostasy, gets death threats

Nov 8, 2014 8:49 pm By Robert Spencer

abdisaid-abdi-ismail-prophet-islam-somaliaMuhammad said: “Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him” (Bukhari 9.84.57). The death penalty for apostasy is part of Islamic law according to all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence. Yet Muslim spokesmen such as Harris Zafar, Mustafa Akyol, Salam al-Marayati, M. Cherif Bassiouni, and Ali Eteraz (among many others) have assured us that Islam doesn’t punish apostasy and condemned those who point out that it does as bigots and “Islamophobes.” So are  Zafar, Akyol, al-Marayati, Bassiouni, and Eteraz on their way to Somalia as we speak, so as to explain to the Muslim clerics who are denouncing Abisaid Abdi Ismail that they are misunderstanders of Islam? Akyol made a reasonably good statement recently; where are the others?

“Book on apostasy in Islam earns writer the moniker ‘Somalia’s Salman Rushdie,’” by Fredrick Nzwili, Religion News Service, November 7, 2014:

NAIROBI, Kenya (RNS) A Somali scholar is stoking Muslim anger after he published a book questioning the concept of the death penalty for apostasy in Islam.

Now, he is being branded as “Somalia’s Salman Rushdie” a reference to the British–Indian novelist whose book, “The Satanic Verses,” provoked worldwide Muslims protests and a fatwa from Iranian Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989.

Abdisaid Abdi Ismail’s book, “The Rule of Apostasy In Islam: Is it True?” was published in Kenya in September….

Ismail said the book furthers the growing voice of Muslim scholars, intellectuals and prominent clerics worldwide who are increasingly rejecting the abuse of Islam by extremist groups such as the Islamic State, Nigeria’s Boko Haram and Somalia’s Al-Shabab.

“What we need are secular states where there is democracy, justice and equality for all,” he said. “Not theocratic ones where leaders rule by the name of God.”…

“I wanted to explain to my people the true meaning of apostasy in Islam,” he said.

A graduate of the Umm Al-Qura University in Saudi Arabia, Ismail, 50,  has written four other books on globalization and economics.

But he appears to have struck a raw nerve with the latest book, which he had hoped would stimulate a debate on religious freedom in Islam. The book also touches on other issues, such as gender equality and stoning adulterers to death in Islam.

“Apostasy is crime in Islam,” said Sheikh Abdallar Kheir, a religious scholar at Kenyatta University in Nairobi. “It is mentioned in the Quran and the traditions of the prophet. It is like treason.

“But there conditions and situations in which the rule is applied,” Kheir added. “It must be in an Islamic state, there must be dialogue and reasoning before it is applied, and it is applied if the person in the new faith causes disturbance to Muslims or the Islamic faith.”

Since the book’s launch, Ismail says he has received death threats, and warnings not to return to Somalia where his wife and three children still live. He has also been branded a devil and infidel on social media, with radical clerics calling for the banning and burning of his book.

He had traveled to Kenya to publish the book, since he could not find a willing publisher in Somalia. He was kicked out of hotels in Nairobi and Kampala, Uganda.

“Every day, I fear fanatical supporters of Somali extremists here in Kenya and Somalia may harm me,” he said. “I have been warned they may even try to kill me.”…

But Ismail admits the subject is controversial and he only began researching and writing about it after it became clear that there was nobody brave enough to confront it.

Ismail’s book is selling secretly in Kenya and Somalia, after booksellers removed it from their shelves in the wake of Muslim clergy protests. It is available in the Somali language on Amazon.

So now there’s an ISLAM-ic state in the middle east. Does that make it ok for them to murder apostates??? According to this “scholar”, yes.

The targeting of moderate Muslims by the jihadists is the reason there can never be a ‘moderate Islam’.

The battle will be won by those who are ‘more-Islamic-than-thou’. Those murderers will kill in the name of Allah with the expectation of a reward in paradise of eternal sex with slaves.

Yes, there can never be a ‘moderate Islam’. But this new wave of intellectuals questioning the teachings of Muhammad will eventually lead to a massive wake up among Muslims.
It won’t lead to a ‘moderate Islam, it will lead to ‘no Islam’!!!

Another intellectual openly and publicly questioning the teachings of Al Azhar university…on public TV…in a Muslim country…Egypt!

        Salah
How does moderate Islam lead to no Islam? Is there only one interpretation? Does the IS and talibans clergy have the sole monopolistic right to the interpretation of the Koran? Lets not give them that monopoly. Christian reformation began with one man and the rise of Protestants did not lead to the demise of Roman Catholism. It just lead to the creation of two streams or denominations, each accusing the other as heretic. So similarly a new interpretation in Islam will just lead to two streams – one, the old dogmatic and rigid historical orthodox Taliban type of Islam ; and two, the ‘reformed’ and more dispensational type of Islam for a new changing era. The early christian reformers were threatened and killed and so is it any surprise that the same will happen to those who dare reinterprete Islam.

“How does moderate Islam lead to no Islam?”

That’s not what I said. There is no moderate Islam, there will never be. Trying to reform Islam (e.g. abolising death for apostasy) will eventually lead to the fall of Islam altogether.

“If they had gotten rid of the apostasy punishment Islam wouldn’t exist today.” (Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi)

Salah, Barry K obscures his desperate defense of Islam in that first sentence in order to distract from his latter use of false equivalence in an attempt to cover up Islam’s foul stink.

You are quite correct to say in effect, that Islam is unfixable.

          Nov 9, 2014 at 8:00 pm

          Jay Boo,
If you are a Christian you are strangely one who is so extremely full of hate that you are unable to see that there are genuine Muslims who choose to differ in their interpretation of Islam. You think you are the divinely inspired and divinely appointed expert and most qualified to determine what the Somali scholar can believe or not believe in. You must get this into your head, that everyone can believe their own version of Islam, militant or otherwise. Just that some like this scholar , chooses to challenge the militant views. What do you dislike about that? What good is spewing out hate , with no concern or suggestion for some long term solution to the current issue. Your small ‘christian’ mind must be to fight to the death in another ‘crusade’ as the only solution. Having differing views like this Somali scholar makes you angry, because in your small mind , if you are not of taliban persuasion then you are not a muslims. In Malaysia, there are muslim organisations who differ in views from the radicals and stand up for rights of non Muslims to their faith and way of life. Are these muslims in your views also not ‘true Muslims’ ?
If you read what I have written, I am for military and legislative measures as a short and immediate measure to deal with the evil jihadists but I do not throw stones at those ‘reformers ‘ and say that is not Islam. Changing hearts and minds by moderates challenging current theology is the long term solution. Your hate and small ‘Christian’ crusading heart will not eliminate Islam from the face of the earth. God is still in charge, not hate and unreasonableness.

Islam is unfixable and all the clever false equivalence tactics won’t hide that fact. You imply that Christianity is the reason that the slave trade existed below but offer no evidence while the evidence convicting Islam is overwhelming. Islam was founded from slavery. I have no hate against Abisaid Abdi Ismail I merely state the obvious that Islam is unfixable.

You wish to define me as full of hate
          Hypocritical aren’t you?
You used the word crusade at least three times
Crusader is a common slur that Muslims use to define all Christians in order to rationalize their bigoted hatred against all Christians.
I bet you didn’t think that I knew that, did you?

          Jay Boo,
I implied nothing about Christianity encouraging slavery or segregation but simply that such were practised by Christians, wrongly of course. Like the crusades, they are some bitter historical facts which we must learn to accept and learn lessons from them. Don’t read what is not there and say I imply something which is of your own creative imagination. Ask the author first. Is that a reasonable request?

Many Christians not too long ago saw slavery as legitimate and the American colonies prosper on it. Not too long ago, segregation in the bible belt of USA and apartheid in South Africa was justified by use of bible verses by certain churches. We don’t have a good record ourselves. Of course now things have changed for the better. Lets then also now focus on the better and positive and support people like the Somali scholar Ismail who challenged old jihadist type hardline interpretation.

Your pathetic attempt at false equivalence is laughable.

Islam was founded by Muhammad specifically to promote the slave trade,
Muhammad had many sex slaves to indulge his perversions in Allah’s name.

You make me laugh by throwing the term ‘ false equivalence’. You think by just throwing the term around , you sound intelligent. Sometimes it displays ignorance. I was just saying that we do not have a good record in regard to slavery, without saying one is better or worst than the other or equal to the other. I have not even equate all sins are the same as the other. That will be moral equivalence from our earthly perspective. But whatever it is , all sinners will face the same equal judgement in eternity for sins, big or small ie death unless redeemed by the blood of Christ.

He prayed for The Lord to shelter his children under the shadow of His wings. He deliberately chose to raise urgent awareness of the plight of Christians during the crisis and get his church to focus prayer on them. Islamic theology prescribes death to Muslim apostates ?

But the Islamic apologists continue to maintain that Islamic theology prescribes nothing more than milk and cookies and other such warm and fuzzy things for the non-Muslims and disobedient Muslims.

We ex-Muslims living with Islam’s formal and informal death penalty for apostasy know that Mohammedanism instructs and inspires Muslims to behead and crucify those who refuse to submit to Islam and Mumammad and the Sharia.

    Qur’an 005.033
Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,

Here is a recent statement from a group of Bangladeshi apostates living in the UK explaining the reasons why they have abandoned Islam:

“One who claims to be a messenger of God is expected to live a saintly life. He must not be given to lust, he must not be a sexual pervert, and he must not be a rapist, a highway robber, a war criminal, a mass murderer or an assassin. One who claims to be a messenger of God must have a superior character. He must stand above the vices of the people of his time. Yet Muhammad’s life is that of a gangster godfather. He raided merchant caravans, looted innocent people, massacred entire male populations and enslaved the women and children. He raped the women captured in war after killing their husbands and told his followers that it is okay to have sex with their captives (Qur’an 33:50). He assassinated those who criticized him and executed them when he came to power and became de facto despot of Arabia. Muhammad was bereft of human compassion. He was an obsessed man with his dreams of grandiosity and could not forgive those who stood in his way…

    The statement continues,

Muhammad was a narcissist, like Hitler, Saddam or Stalin. He was astute and knew how to manipulate people, but his emotional intelligence was less evolved than that of a 6-year-old child. He simply could not feel the pain of others. He brutally massacred thousands of innocent people and pillaged their wealth. His ambitions were big and as a narcissist he honestly believed he is entitled to do as he pleased and commit all sorts of crimes and his evil deeds are justified.”

The title says ‘Muslim’ questions death penalty for apostasy, gets death threats. From the comments on this blog, I get the impression that there is no such thing as ‘reformed’ muslim theology. So how can this guy question the death penalty and yet be referred to as ‘Muslim’ in the title of the news. But never mind because I too agree that he is still a Muslim who chooses to defer in interpretation from those of the orthodox IS and Taliban persuasion. Now I know not all Muslims think like talibans. They genuinely believe some laws just belong to a different dispensation. Many of these ‘reformers’ put their lives at risk when they go public with their views. Don’t join the talibans by demanding that he justify his convictions , surah by surah. The world never demanded reformed Jews or believers of numerous persuasions to do that.

    Khomeini’s views on Islam
“Allah did not create man so that he could have fun. The aim of creation was for mankind to be put to the test through hardship and prayer. An Islamic regime must be serious in every field. There are no jokes in Islam. There is no humor in Islam. There is no fun in Islam. There can be no fun and joy in whatever is serious.” — Ayatollah Khomeini

A Muslim male may have sex with an animal, however once he has finished he must slaughter the animal. He should not eat the meat himself nor should the Muslim sell the meat to anybody in his own village. Selling the meat to those from the next village is fine……..But if a Muslim should commit an act of sodomy (bugger/anal sex) with a cow, a ewe or even a camel. The animals urine and excrement become contaminated even its milk cannot be consumed. The animal should be killed as quickly as possible and the its body burnt. ~ Ayatollah Khomeni – The Little Green Book

This confirms my opinion that Muslims are insane. What sane person could even think up this stuff?

      Ayatollah Khomeini was a wacko
I doubt that even MO would have said such things.

On the other hand, When Muhammad lusted after his adopted son’s wife, Allah reprimanded Muhammad that he should after all take her as his own.
Yes, Muhammad had doubts about this but when Allah demands it who is a mere prophet to impose one’s greater than Allah’s morality against Allah’s wish.

More than 1400 years ago in Arabia the
people were living very much in fear. They
feared their neighbours. They feared other
tribes. They even feared their idols. For this
was the time before Islam. The Arabs were
worshipping idols. In their ignorance they
would bury their newly born daughters alive.
As Islam began to spread among Arabs such
cruel practices stopped. For Islam taught love
and peace. It taught kindness and respect.
Prophet Muhammad himself was a very kind
and loving person. He treated every one,
young and old, with kindness and respect.
    Because Prophet Muhammad was spreading
the word of God. Because he was changing,
for better, the lives of many Arabs and
because some Arabs felt that by the teachings
of Muhammad their old idols were losing
power they disliked Muhammad and planned
to kill him. Every time they tried to kill him,
they failed. This angered the enemies of Islam
even more. So they began to harass him in
    every way they knew.
One old woman made a habit of throwing
rubbish on Prophet Muhammad whenever he
passed from her house. Muhammad had to
pass that house daily on the way to the
mosque. Even when the old woman threw
rubbish on him, he would pass silently
without showing any anger or annoyance.
This was a regular, daily event.
One day when the Prophet was passing by, the
woman was not there to throw the rubbish.
He stopped and asked the neighbour about
her well-being. The neighbour informed the
Prophet that the woman was sick on bed. The
Prophet politely asked permission to visit the
woman. When allowed he entered the house,
the woman thought that he had come there to
take his revenge when she was unable to
defend herself because of sickness. But the
Prophet assured her that he had come to her,
not to take any revenge, but to see her and to
look after her needs, as it was the command
of Allah that if any one is sick, a Muslim
should visit him and should help him if his
    help is needed
The old woman was greatly moved by this
kindness and love of the Prophet. By the
example of greatness of Muhammad, she
understood that he was truly the Prophet of
God and Islam was the true religion. She
    accepted Islam at once.
On another occasion, Prophet Muhammad was
on a journey. One day, at noon, Prophet
Muhammad chose the shade of a small tree
    and rested.
One of the enemies seeing that Muhammad
was alone thought it a good time to kill him
quickly and quietly. He went towards him
with a drawn sword and asked the Prophet:
“Tell me who can help you now?”
“Allah”, replied the Prophet calmly with
    manifest confidence.
Seeing this calm assurance, the enemy was
frightened, and the sword fell away from his
hands. With the same calm, the Prophet took
that sword in his own hand and asked: “Now,
you tell me who is there to save you?”
    “No one” replied the enemy.
“No, you are wrong, the same Allah will help
you also,” said the generous Prophet and let
    the enemy go free.
Seeing this noble example the man accepted
    the Islam then and there.

The broader argument is that ‘reasonable’ men would reject death for apostasy – also the argument recently made about slavery in Islam – but here you have Islamic State doing something very interesting – they have forbidden the study of philosophy. Crucially because it involves – the use of logic and reason – outside of what is deemed permissible in Islam.

And it goes to the former Pope’s point – that being – for the need for reason and logic in religion – in the speech naturally that the Muslim world found so offensive.

    Islam’s inshallah dilemma

Muslim love to brag about everything – one of which is shamelessly – their growing number – while there is the death penalty in place for leaving – but the other item high on their boosting list is their historical achievements – there are the ones from 1000 odd years ago and the more recent – always closely tied to conquest – after they took Constantinople – they began to add the Ancient Greek text – uniqueness to their own – but similarly only selected manuscripts were allowed to translated and adopted – those that were excluded – those of the Greek philosophers. There could be no reason and logic used outside of God’s will – inshallah.

But once Europe regained access to the same manuscripts – and not the Arabic copies [often poorly copied] – helped give birth to Europe’s Enlightenment – based on logic and reason and freedom of thought. Or choice.

As for the reasonable men in Islam – there must be a sense that this just can’t go on.

I think this man’s mistake – and it goes some way to explain the allure of the idea of the Islamic State – he wishes to see his idea be enacted in one. It’s their mirage.
